The guide to guides.

Introduction

Hello, my name is Ylemon. This is my new guide I am writing for all of you to perhaps learn something from when writing guides.

How should I set out my guide?

There are many things to remember when setting out a guide such as:

The format of your guide- The format of your guide is the layout. A layout is the way in which the parts of something are arranged or laid out.

The Colours you will use- The colours are different colours in your guide to highlight important parts.

The size of text you will use- The size of your text will need to be recognizable and understandable

The format:

When setting out the format you must always remember to put your title at the top.

My layout when I make guides:

Title

Intro

Sections

Important parts

Thank you.

When setting your format just remember that you have to make it easily understandable and planned out. Remember trial and error is the best way to learn from mistakes. If you make a unsuccessful guide, don't give up. Learn from your mistakes.

Colours:

When writing in colours here's the advice id offer you:

Never over do colours, make it colourful but only highlight main features in a guide. Such as titles and subheadings, I'd advise not to put any more in.

Make small slices of information in italic and make it this blue for maximum effect.

Don't use bright colours or too dull colours. This can cause it to be too unbearable to read.

Size:

When picking size you have to remember many things. If I make this big what if i need to make something bigger? I recommend you make the titles size 6 and your heading size 5 and your subtitles underlined. If you do not do this then things could get a little harder and you might run into a few "walls" in your making of a guide.

How to find out the correct information for your guide.

Research:

Research is the key to a thing you don't know about, if your writing your guide off the top of your head sometimes it can get a little hard, especially if you are writing an ultimate guide. Don't be afraid to look at existing guides for help, but don't copy them just use them to give you ideas on what else to write about. This is very helpful and in some cases mandatory.

Another way to research is going in game with a friend and testing things, if your making a warp guide warp to random places and try to find new and amazing warps. If you're making a guide on how to mine the correct way you need to test a lot of new mining skills and try them in game to see which is the most efficient. These are very time consuming but it is a sign of effort and devotion in your guide, you will need this to write a successful guide.

Interviews and surveys:

If you're trying to find out the most used way to mine(just an example) you can include a quick survey so people can learn from other peoples views. But if you're writing about things you generally don't know a lot about .e.g. staff, then you might want to interview a member of staff and ask them a few questions so you have a general idea about how it works.

How to make your guide understandable.

Grammar and spelling:

When writing your guide you will need a thing called professionalism in your guide so people understand it. Professionalism is when you do correct spelling and correct grammar all the way through something. So when writing your guide you must always remember to spell check and read through it all at least twice before submitting your guide. This can help a lot, it can be embarrassing when people spell out your mistakes.

Paragraphs:

When writing your guide you must remember to use Paragraphs, this can help a lot as it shows a sign of professionalism(read above), this helps them understand your guide and think about your guide a lot more. They think about that section before moving on to another.

Extras.

Getting the reader involved:

If you want to add a little bit of fun and amusement into your guide then maybe add a poll to get the reader involved and make your target audience have something more to do than just read your guide. Maybe add a wall of fame or a vote every week to decide who gets on the amazing people wall. These are all a plus to your guide. Always remember that a guide can never get too detailed.

Seeing a need:

You need to think when writing a guide, this includes:
  • If there is any need for this guide to be made.
  • If it will help people.
  • If you are capable of writing one.
  • If you are educated enough to write one.
  • If you can make your guide an improvement over 60% of the other similar guides.
  • Remember you can always ask other people for ideas when writing a guide. Its never too late to write one.

Thank you for reading.
