Day One - To Infinity...

Day One: To Infinity…

Bookend One

Changes - Mike Perry, Dimitri Vangelis & Wynam & Ten Time feat. The Companions

“Infinity is a strange concept.”

Yugi glanced over at the spirit sitting on the edge of his desk. Papers and cards were screwed about, and the pen between pale fingers was twirling back and forth.

“I mean, for everyone, infinity can’t last, right?” the spirit was staring out the window, his back slightly to Yugi. “But for someone like me…”

Yugi hummed, looking down at the math assignment before him. The pre-calc problem was practically taunting him, and he had half a mind to glare it out of existence.

“Infinity is forever, but it can’t ever happen,” the spirit finally turned to his partner, anxiety radiating off of him. “-Right?”

Yugi looked up at the spirit and thought for a moment. But it was too long for the spirit, who turned back. Yugi went for his phone and grasped it within his hands. Fingers flew over the keyboard before he finally found what he was looking for.

He pressed play and moved the math homework away, reaching for his nearby markers and a blank piece of paper. The spirit perked up at the familiar acoustic guitar of that song resonated through the room. He turned around and watched his partner as he furiously drew something; he could move around the stack of books and see, but why ruin the surprise?

The spirit hummed, tapping his soundless foot against the edge of the desk as he sat and listened to the music in the air. Yugi smiled as he heard the spirit start singing softly with the music; out of all the songs Yugi played when studying, this was the only one the spirit really enjoyed.

“Sure,” the spirit shifted slightly to look at his partner as the song echoed its end, the amethyst-eyed smiling as he drew, “infinity might be forever, and impossible to reach, but who said you were infinite?”

“I thought the infinite maze of my mind did, or my infinite age.”

“Your age has a date. It’s only infinite when we can’t date it anymore. Same with your mind; we’ve hit repeat doors before when looking through there.”

“Well…” the spirit faltered, trying to think of a comeback, “-what about-” he blinked as Yugi held the paper up. It was a black infinity sign, but in the two little circles, the kanji for Yugi and Yami had been written. Golden lines highlighted the unending loop, and unfinished flowers of all sizes but of two colors - magenta-purple and ruby-crimson - decorated the rest of the sheet.

“Even if something is infinite, it doesn’t mean we can’t change infinity,” Yugi said. The spirit glanced between him and the paper, his crimson eyes not totally sure where to lock themselves onto. “If you are infinite, you’ve changed,” he glanced at his phone where the repeat loop was showing. He stood up out of his seat, and grabbed a pin.

The spirit watched with wide eyes as his partner pinned the picture onto the nearby art board, and hovered to his side as the boy pulled his coat back on. Yugi stared at the spirit for a few moments before holding up his phone and saying:

“Let’s restart infinity.” He pushed the restart button.

Day Two - Dawn

Day Two: Dawn

Week One: Time

Rather Be - Clean Bandit feat. Jess Glynne

Dawn broke over the silent city.

Yami pushed his foot lethargically against the group, propelling his skateboard forward. He yawned as the sunrise shone with its creams and limes.

Derva Port was still asleep, but the various Sweepers across the city were stirring to life, mechanical systems ready to keep the green-powered city clean. The electronic signs were powering online, their signs flickering to life.

Yami let his skateboard roll to a stop, staring up at the dim sign up on a building. The bright grin of the Champion was almost glowing through the screen, and his Primarina was playing in the background.

Yami smiled softly, thinking back to his and Yugi's adventure to being Champion as he waited for the call he was expecting.

Both Yugi and Yami hailed to different regions - Yugi from Alola and Yami from Hoenn - but were two of the five people chosen to ‘beta-test’ the floating-island region of Sylra new Gym Challenge. The five were set to start in different cities, and had a set order to progress from there.

All five of them had completed their region's Gym Challenge, and so were all pretty experienced. Yami started in Port Derva, and worked his way out to the surrounding towns and their Gyms.

Along the way, after claiming his second badge - the Sear Badge - he ran into Yugi. The Alola kid was all smiles and bright eyes - and a really fucking good Trainer. Yami got trounced.

From then on, the two had a rivalry, sometimes sparking into something much more serious. Right before claiming his fifth badge, the All-Sight badge, Yugi challenged him for the right to go first. This time, Yami was able to put up more of a fight, but still lost. Yugi claimed his sixth badge, and then Yami claimed his fifth.

As they walked out of the Gym, however, dark clouds covered the region. It forced the five trainers to regroup and figure out what was going on. Professor Sanda Wood was able to determine, with her new Legendary tracking, that a good number of Legendaries had gathered in the region. The amount of Legendaries gathered in one spot was sure to disrupt the region’s delicate balance and send it on a very quick path of destruction.

The five challengers, along with Professor Sanda Wood and the head of police Crocus, headed to the top of Mount Racona to confront the Legendaries. The Legendaries hailed from all eight regions: Articuno from Kanto, Lugia from Johto, Groudon from Hoenn, Dialga from Sinnoh, Zekrom from Unova, Yveltal from Kalos, Solgaleo from Alola, and Zacian from Galar.

All eight Legendaries were performing a ritual of sorts, giving their power to open up a… wormhole of sorts. Yugi couldn’t identify it as an Ultra Wormhole, however; this was something different. It turned out, from the cackling the group of seven was hearing, that the leader of Team Scythe, Nix, had successfully ‘taken control’ of the Legendaries, and were using them to force open a wormhole to the Other Side.

Of course, even with only eight out of the total sixty-one Legendaries, the region was growing unstable; the amount of energy radiating from the Pokemon was causing the Silverhelm crystals that kept the island floating were being absorbed by the Legendaries. In order to close the wormhole, they needed to save the Legendaries, turn off the controlling device, and seal up the wormhole - all at the same time.

Professor Sanda Wood got to work preparing to close the wormhole, while Crocus went to arrest Nix and her team; his own team was on the way. That left Yami and the other four to calm down the Legendaries. Yami tackled Groudon, Yugi handled Solgaleo, Anzu took on Articuno and Lugia, Jounouchi fought Zacian and Dialga, and Kaiba took on Yveltal and Zekrom.

The eight Legendaries were calmed, and Yami went to help Crocus while Yugi helped Professor Sanda Wood calibrate the wormhole due to Yugi’s past experiences with Ultra Wormholes. It took some work, but Nix was defeated and arrested. The Legendaries were let free of their restraints, but the wormhole wouldn’t close. A giant eye peered out of the wormhole, and immediately looked at Yugi and Yami. All Legendaries were on guard, and the true battle began.

All the trainers fought off the forces of Sildows (large shadow-like creatures able to take on the form of any Pokemon. Like Dittos, except more shadow-y), and the eight Legendaries helped. But the Legendaries were weakened from both opening the wormhole and battling the five challengers; an opening in their defenses had the large creature in the wormhole able to make its strike.

Two tails flew out of the wormhole, royal red streaked with the familiar dark blue-purple of Sildows, and wrapped around Yugi and Yami. The two were taken off guard, and through the wormhole. The entire group watched, horrified, as the two disappeared. The Sildows, however, continued their assault on the Pokemon while also guarding the entrance of the wormhole, and so they were forced to keep at a standstill.

Meanwhile, in the wormhole, the two twin-like Trainers were caught in one of the large Pokemon’s five snake-like tails. Each tail had a golden bell-like tip, and rejoined together at the large Pokemon. It was mostly bird, but had red scales for feathers, and a blue orb was embedded into its head.

The large snake-bird-thing introduced itself as Slifer, one of the two Legendaries of the Sylra region. It and its other duo member, Diabound, had fled the region after they almost caused the island to collapse. Diabound fled deep underground, at the very bottom of the floating island, while Slifer hid itself in the Other Side, watching over humanity.

The Legendary was displeased with humanity’s current state, and wished to wipe it out; it had taken Nix’s rebellious emotions and amplified them to force her to collect enough Legendaries to set the great Sky Dragon Pokemon free. But its plan for freedom had been denied by said humans, causing Slifer to distrust them more.

Yugi and Yami both disagreed with this argument, saying that humans weren’t so bad; they were just a little messed up, but not to the point of extinction on the island. Yugi pointed out that by calling the Legendaries, they had almost caused the island to collapse, something Slifer had fled to avoid himself. However, the Legendary would not back down.

So the three made a deal of sorts; Slifer would let humanity see another dawn and many more after that, but on one condition: Yugi and Yami had something the God Dragon desired. Something the two of them didn’t know they possessed. They, however, agreed to the terms: half of their-

A familiar ring broke Yami’s thoughts, and the call on the RotomWatch was answered automatically, immediately letting Yami know who it was.

“Where are you?” Yugi yawned, and Yami smiled. He looked away from the billboard that was now fully illuminated, and pushed him and his skateboard off through the city.

“I’m on my way to the town square,” he said. Yugi hummed, and through the watch came soft shuffling, then padded feet. “Did you just wake up?”

“A few minutes ago, yeah. What’s got you out of bed at…” a pause and some murmuring below his breath, “5:45 in the morning?”

Yami chuckled, “Just thinking,” he replied. “About how we met, and everything we went through.”

“Professor Sanda Wood owes us half our souls,” Yugi perfectly deadpanned. Yami laughed.

“At least we used those halves for a good reason?”

“I’m not saying we didn’t, I’m saying she owes us each half a soul.”

“I don’t think Professor Sanda Wood can do that, Champ.”

Yugi groaned, “Don’t remind me that I’m the champion. It’s something I try not to think about this early, Yami.”

“Sorry aibou,” Yami chuckled. He heard the telltale double snap-snap-snap, and then wheels rolling against rocky stones came through. The crimson-eyed male looked up to see that he had arrived at the town square, deserted and lifeless; an unusual look for it.

Yami stepped off his skateboard and picked it up, leaning it on a nearby railing before jumping up onto it. Soon, more wheels rolling caught his ear, and Yami looked over to see Yugi roller skating up to him. The boy slid to a stop beside his counterpart, and the two grinned.

“Nothing from Kaiba today?” Yami asked. Yugi giggled.

“Nah, I don’t think even he gets up this early. I think you’re the only one of the Elite Four who does this. But actually, I got an email from Chairman Rose-”

“Chairman Rose?” Yami raised an eyebrow. “You mean the guy who owns Macro Cosmos and is also the chairman for the Galarian Pokemon League?”

“The very same,” Yugi hummed. He began to explain the email to the Dark type-user of the Elite Four as dawn crested overhead into morning.

A/N: if it wasn't clear, the five beta-testers became the Elite Four and Champion depending on how well they battled each other in a final tournament bracket: Anzu (Flying) is first, Jounouchi (Fighting) is second, Kaiba (Dragon) is third, Yami (Dark) is fourth, and Yugi (Fairy) is Champion.

Day Three - Past

Day Three: Past

Week One: Time

DIVE - Flanger Moose feat. IA English

His past was strange and ever-changing; like a candle flame in the wind. People always surrounded him, and his studies were piling up on him even as a young child.

But his past self held strong. Always doing what was asked of him, always studying, always paying attention even to the point where a few servants thought he wasn’t normal. Wasn’t human.

Or was that because of his obsession with the Nile? The fact that whenever he got the chance, he snuck away to stare at the reflective water? This obsession, it was easy to find him if he wasn’t within the walls, because he would always be somewhere along the Nile; never in the same place, but always beside the life-giving river.

Once, when his father was the one to find him, he asked him why he had such a fixation on the water. Sure, all of their people appreciated the Nile, but his son appreciated it to the extremes. His son looked up at him with glittering crimson eyes, the mask of his emotions, and said, “I don’t know.”

This fixation wasn’t anything too serious in the past. As he grew older, it seemed his obsession over the river died down. But his past self knew the opposite; it was only growing stronger. But more and more duties were piled upon him, and so he had less and less time. Once his father died of an unknown illness - or a curse, some whispered - his coronation took over his time. He was now the ruler of a kingdom, and had no time for his obsession, even if the pull sometimes fuzzied his mind to the point where he couldn’t even speak properly.

Sitting by the Nile once again, now many years older than the time his father found him, he tore off a piece of his cape. He took the royal-blue fabric and wrapped it around his red-stained arm. The more wrappings, the tighter the bandage. Finally, he tied it off and sighed.

He looked up at the sky, dark clouds looming overhead, beckoning the looming doom of the world. The Thief King was threatening his people, threatening his nation, threatening the entire land. The battle so far had been stalemates between the Dark One’s disciple and the Egyptian God’s child.

His head fell forward, sighing. This wasn’t what he had planned for his rule. His hand fell into the river water, swirling through the fluid mirror. It had been years since he had allowed himself to let go of the restraint he had on his fixation. Even his own officials were worried about him because only one of them knew why he was always so stressed even when there was nothing to do.

Little ringlets curled around his fingers and he gasped. His eyes went wide and the river water curled around his hand. “H-huh…?”

The river spoke to him. Asked him who he was and why he was here; asked why the sky was cloudy, and why he was injured. His past self replied to the river dutifully, answering each question with full honesty. Then he asked a question of his own, “Who are you?”

The river giggled and said, “You can call me Yugi!”

To destroy the monster he sealed thousands of years ago, he had to perform a ritual. The fixation he had all those years ago never left him even without his past, but with it back, he could connect the dots.

His partner had also found a source of water when he was younger, and he had been watching him as they both grew up. Then, school took up all of his partner’s time, and so he never saw him again until that day during the battle against the monster.

The day he died was the day that his partner freed him.

The past had to be repeated to save the world. So he rushed his way over to the Nile, hoping his partner would find him before he repeated the spell. He didn’t know if it was to say his goodbyes or to save him from having to use the spell.

No one ever came. The gods continued to hold back the monster and his wielder as he wrote the spell in the dirt. His finger moved fluidly in the dirt, not missing a beat from when he performed it last. No cry for his given name or his title came.

The spell was completed. His partner and their friends still weren’t here. He took a deep breath and waded into the Nile.

Then let himself fall.

Crimson eyes flew open and a tanned hand was swiftly placed upon his chest. Adrenaline slowly drained away like the Nile from his past, and he sighed, relaxing into the mattress.

...Just a dream… or a nightmare.

He looked over to see his sleeping partner, hogging all the sheets. He smiled, not bothered by the lack of blankets. He simply rolled onto his side and hugged his partner close. The sleeping boy snuggled into his chest more, and he hummed briefly.

The past was gone and done. He didn’t have the world on his shoulders anymore… so he could focus on the present now.
Day Four - Clock

Day Four: Clock

Week One: Time

Hourglass - Set It Off

The hourglass seemed endless.

The being looked up, letting the falling sand land on his face. He’d been stuck in this glass prison for… a while now. Time in the Afterlife was screwed around quite a bit, and he lost track of all the time he’d been in there for. But his heart never forgot. Never forgot the time he’d spent there.

But now, in this hourglass, with no indication of light beyond his own presence inside the hourglass, time was nothing. The dark cream-colored sand was the only color in there; even his own color had faded away into shadows.

Pebble after pebble after pebble fell upon his head, counting the seconds that passed by. Already, he was floating in a sea of sand. He ran a pitch-black hand through the sand, not expecting to remember how to feel; he wasn’t wrong. His senses had long since disappeared.

He didn’t even remember why he was sitting in this hourglass to begin with. A faint spark of something that felt heavenly blinked in the back of his head - or from behind him - but then dimmed into the endless darkness surrounding the hourglass; lost forever within the emptiness.

He raised a hand to his face, studying the black appendage. The fingers were long and pointed, before the tips simply dissipated into little droplets of black. The droplets floated upward, defying what he assumed to be the direction of gravity. Sometimes the droplets bounced into falling particles of sand, sending them both in different directions. When the droplets hit the side of the hourglass, they simply disappeared. If they floated to the top, they simply disappeared.

He lowered his hand to the sand and sighed.

Drip-drip-drip-drip

The sand continued to fall as the being inside hunched over, finally losing his regal stature for the first time in many years as he waited. And waited. And waited. For something he didn’t remember.

Day Five: Alarm

Day Five: Alarm

Week One: Time

Stand Alone - Generdyn feat. ZAYDE WOLF

An unusually pale hand fisted the dagger in his belt. Above the black mask, eyes narrowed as he watched the guards patrol the sandstone wall he was on top of. Crouched down low to the wall, the figure waited for his moment to strike.

There.

The figure made a straight beeline for the opening and jumped down the wall. Feet landed silently in the garden, filled with greenery and other blooming colors.

He glanced around nervously, checking for any guards. It was risky enough, he thought as he peered down both ends of the hallway; but it would be worth the payoff, he decided as he made his way down the right passage.

The boy stiffened when he heard the telltale footsteps of guards, and hid himself in the ceiling’s shadows. The guards rounded the corner, followed by one of the Pharaoh’s High Priests.

The boy quietly clicked his tongue; he would notice him in no time. Light coal colored eyes immediately eyed him, and he growled. Caught.

The guards immediately went on the defensive, and then went to attack the boy. But the boy was quicker; he jumped down onto one’s head, then kicked the other out of the way. He pulled a dagger out of his belt and threw it at the High Priest, but he channeled the golden ring around his neck to pull up a shield; the resulting contact caused a brief flash of light, which let the boy sneak past.

“Sound the alarms!” The High Priest yelled, while the other was still running down the hall. He heard a long horn blast from behind, and clicked his tongue again. He quickly slid down the hallways, knowing the palace like the back of his hand. A wall of guards quickly formed in his way, but he simply threw two more daggers at them. They blocked the daggers, but the boy slid right under them, knocking one of them down to his feet in the process.

A blast of ice magic came out of the corner of his eye, but he flipped out of the way, before throwing up an illusion wall. He caught his breath for a second before rushing on, hearing more and more footsteps near the fake wall.

He turned a corner, and then smoothed his hand along the left wall. His hand ghosted over a small indented stone, and he smiled. He pushed it in further, and the wall slid open. The corridor was narrow and pitch-black, but he knew where it led.

His feet landed soundlessly across the stone floor, weaving his way through the secret corridor. Finally, now crawling on his knees as the passage for tighter, he reached the dead end; he pulled back the stone hinged door, and glanced out.

Sitting on the golden throne was the unsuspecting Pharaoh. His Priests surrounded him, minus the one he encountered in the walls.

Shouts came from down the hall, and all six occupants of the room’s body language conveyed curiosity. Then the boy saw the Pharaoh’s crimson eyes bright up, and the tiniest sliver of a smirk came on his face.

The boy took the chance.

All six Priests screamed in terror as they saw the intruder holding a silver knife come at their Pharaoh, flying out of the sky. The Pharaoh grinned; one hand went to capture the hand holding the knife, while the other wrapped around the boy’s waist, catching him.

All six Guardians stood in shock, while the seventh and his apprentice rushed into the room, also shocked at the sight they saw. “Good luck next time, Yugi,” the Pharaoh smirked, and the thief dropped his knife with a growl.

“I was this close! This close!!” He yelled, and when his face shifted to let the Priests see, they saw a soft blush was on his cheeks, accompanied by a pout.

The Pharaoh chuckled, before turning to his seventh Priest. “Mahaado, call off the alarm. There’s no need.”

“O-of course, my Pharaoh…”
