The stories we don't tell...
‘Let’s use a cart.’ We don’t need a lot of groceries but as usual we forgot to bring a bag. I stick out my hand and she looks at it for a moment, then takes the coin we need for the shopping cart off the keychain and lays it in my hand. I smile and go on to get the cart. These moments when we don’t need words to say something are so precious to me.
For most shopping carts you need to insert a coin to use it. A €1 or €2 coin. €0,50 might also work, but I’m not sure about that, because we always use the coin on the keychain. Businesses often give away these shopping cart coins as a promotional gift, with their logo on it. My coin wasn’t given to me, though. I found it on the parking lot at the school I go to.
For some reason I remember that walk on the parking lot quite well. It was a warmer day than expected. I was wearing my winter coat but the sun felt warm on my face. When walking onto the parking lot there is a part where you have to walk on the grass when a car passes, there’s no extra space for pedestrians.
A crow often sits there, and also on that particular day. I like that crow, because it doesn’t fly away when people approach. Normally I gaze upon the crow for a moment because it’s such a beautiful bird. In a way I identify with it too, the both of us dressed elegantly in black. At least, I like to think it looks elegant.
When there’s no-one around I also greet the crow. I greet most animals when I walk by them, even inside our house. This was one of those moments. The parking lot was emptier than usual. Probably because of the nice weather, more people would go to school by bicycle.
There was an empty energy drink can standing in the middle of a parking lot. Why people leave their trash lying about like that sometimes, with trash cans at every corner, is beyond me. I picked it up and continued walking towards the school’s back door.
There was a coin keychain laying on the ground, I walked past it. A few steps further I saw another lost shopping cart coin. It made me smile because of the coincidence. I don’t remember why I went to school that day but it was only for a brief time.
When walking back to return home I again noticed that keychain laying on the parking lot. I picked it up. It looked brand new. A silver coin with some white on black public transport logo, overlaid with a smooth soft plastic which feels nice to the touch and I now often fidget around with.
I walked a few steps back to see if that second coin was still there as well, but I couldn’t spot it this time around. This had me feel slightly disappointed, because now there was no reason to tell my girlfriend that I had found two keychain coins near each other on the parking lot at school.
Chiaroscuro's Writing Contest - Round 1 | Season 3
My first entry in season 3 of Chiaroscuro's writing contest. A very short story about one of many stories never told. The mundane things in everyday life you might notice but aren't really worth mentioning.
Word count: 531
Initially my entry was going to be a very detailed description (with flashbacks) of anonpmc2558251 and me doing our groceries. The story was well over 2000 words unfinished, but I decided on sharing only my favorite paragraph from it. Writing about the everyday things in life with so much detail, to be shared publicly, somehow felt very invasive of our privacy even if nothing embarrassing or even mention-worthy was being shared. An interesting experience, and good writing-skill practice in any case.
