Warning, lovey dovey fictional story up ahead, not my best topic. This is for a contest...

The bright sunlight of an early spring day awoke the two. They were laying there so peacefully, no more signs that they had just been quarreling over who was going to get the coffee this morning, only to decide neither of them would. Too cozy in bed. Who needs to get up early on a Saturday anyway?

"I remember how you looked." šŸ˜

Looked when? She does that sometimes, mention something out of the blue that relates to nothing but a train of thought in her mind, not realizing she completely forgets to mention the context of her words. She's a dreamer, easily lost in fantasy.

"The first day I saw you!" šŸ˜‚

He looked geeky, the type of boy who you know must love computer games and edgy music genres the moment you see him. She had him completely figured out just at that first introduction day in college. She was a gamer too, and this type of boy always grabbed her attention. She hadn't stood out to him, though. She didn't have the courage to express herself as much as him back then, and she looked like any regular teenage girl.

"Crazy how my appearance actually worked in my favor back then!" šŸ˜…

Times changed, he looks so different now. Gained some weight, got a haircut, grew a beard and looks like your regular office-guy theses days. No matter, she doesn't love him any differently because of it. But it surely worked well back then. It was a T-shirt of all things, which gave her the courage to say hi.

"Do you still have that one T-shirt?" šŸ¤”

The periodic table of Minecraft elements. It turned out she and him were in different classes, which she was disappointed by because she really was interested in getting to know this boy. So when she saw him wearing this T-shirt, during break-time, sitting all alone on a bench near the sidewalk, listening to music from his MP3 player (An MP3 player, really!? Yup, he liked old gadgets... No surprise there really.), she took her chance to say something. Hey, nice shirt! You like Minecraft? I do too. Let's play together sometime.

"Remember how awkward I was?" šŸ˜“

He wasn't shy, but his social skills surely were lacking. The type of boy who spent more time with computers than with friends. Always had trouble finding the right words. She was the only friend he could make in college. She cared, she understood him and she was able to see right through his barricade of untactful behavior.

But it was not just being awkward like a lot of teenagers experience when trying to make friends. It soon showed to be a problem. People did not like him, avoided him, some bullied him. People did not understand him. It made him feel lonely, his school work suffered and eventually college ended for him when his depression got so bad that the only thing that could help him out of his troubles was intensive therapy.

"I still feel sorry that we fell out of touch." šŸ˜¢

She couldn't really help it, he never blamed her. He moved away to live with his parents, attended therapy sessions and killed the rest of the time playing video games, while she was studying hard to make it through college and going out with friends in her spare time. The occasional blip on Skype with the 5-minute 'Hey, how's life?' conversations and the dozens of Facebook likes he left on her status updates just did not really work for them.

"Don't fret it, I'm just glad you agreed to that party invite!" šŸ˜œ

Two years went by before they actually met again. He had made some friends in therapy and through game community websites and they were organizing a LAN-party. They were going to play Minecraft which was the perfect reason for him to send her a message and invite her to join them. She accepted, she joined in and she loved it! In college she had made different kinds of friends, she lost touch with her passion for gaming but this gathering reminded her how fun it used to be.

"That first time I asked you out though, ouch!" šŸ¤•

She really thought he would be interested in her. At first he didn't even grasp that she was asking him out. 'Watching a movie? Who else is coming?' It would be just the two of them, but he wasn't interested. He said he enjoyed the friendship, didn't want to risk that. And so they stayed just friends.

"It wasn't that I didn't like you, you know that right?" šŸ˜˜

He liked her a lot. She was his favorite friend, she always cared for him. He just wasn't ready for any kind of romantic relationship. Actually, he never even considered it, always had his mind on different things. Tinkering and programming, discovering new games, creating content. That's not what he told her then, but that was the reality of it.

But that moment she asked him on a date did make him think. This time he became the dreamer. He got lost in thoughts, considering the possibilities, imagining how it would be, wondering what he had missed out on since they first met in college. Did she like him as much back then? Did he simply not see it?

"You weren't ready then, I know that now." šŸ˜Š

She always knows how to comfort him. She understands him. Which is also why back then, she knew exactly what was up when he started acting uneasy. He didn't know how to go back from that time he said no to a date. This is what she had hoped for. Acting as just a friend worked alright, but her romantic interest hadn't faded. This was the perfect time for her to ask him out again. He was ready to take that plunge this time around, they fell in love.

"Alright, time for coffee!" šŸ™ƒ

Chiaroscuro's Writing Contest - Round 2 | Season 3
CWC S3R2: A thousand words.

My second entry in season 3 of Chiaroscuro's writing contest. This story was meant to be written following an outline given in the contest description. And my, was it tricky!

Word count: 1000 + "Alright, time for coffee!"

(See what I did there?) ;)

I had a very hard time coming up with anything decent for this theme. Especially because my personal school career and experiences with relationships have barely any similarities to the outline, which makes it hard to relate. Also, the school system is different where I live, we don't have an exact college equivalent. šŸ˜… This story is entirely fictional.

Thanks for reading ♥
