Before we start this tutorial, you need to ask yourself these questions: What do I want with this and how much do I want it? This tutorial works better for singleplayer.

If you answered these questions in a great passion of will, then keep reading.

For the longest time, I have been working on one large single project known as Project Zearth. It has gained a lot of attention since its public release in 2013. Many have questioned me the process of creating cities in Minecraft and how much dedication it takes to such huge projects. Let me lay down the basic principles and explain my creative process. With this tutorial, you will be able to run a long term and well thought out city project. Here are 5 steps I used when I built my cities.
WHAT YOU NEED (Step 1)
First, you would need to bring your motivation and some inspiration. Motivation comes and leaves, but you will need to come with 100% energy before you start any city project. That boost can get you far. Become inspired; picture what kind of city you want in your mind. You have many city maps posted online. Use them to your own benefits, don’t get caught up with how amazing they look but rather take inspiration. Remember, people used a lot of time getting their projects where there are today. Set your goal and appreciate the time you will use to get there.
PLANNING (Step 2)
This is the most important part of the entire project. You can save a lot of time and energy if you do this as early as possible.

Planning keeps you on track and guides you through each and every step of your project. Without any kind of planning, you wouldn’t know where to start or when to stop. It’s important to notice that when you start setting up the project plan, you actually can predict how much work and time you are going to put into this project. You can sketch down a drawing of your city and some building designs you want to apply. What would you like your city to include? How much time will I use? How detailed will my city be? Do I want to furnish each building or just the more important ones? Here is a quick example:

This is a layout of my newest city project:Minecraft city tutorial (500 sub special)- With it you can include what should be done in the different places (Example: Buildings)
- Location of that build
- How it should be done
- Work time on each build (Estimation)
- Priority on the builds (which one you going to work on first)
- And ofc. progress on each build, just to keep you in track

There is so much you can do, this just just a couple of examples. With the planning all done, you can now start creating and shaping your city.
BUILDING (Step 3)
You will not always follow your plan. Creating is all about improvising and failing, just so you can improve your builds. However, you cannot just build out of nowhere and that is why the planning helps you keep on track and finishing your project.

Everyone can build, but some people have more experience than others. The great thing about creating a city is that you will improve your building style. Try to apply few building styles to your city. It shouldn’t looks so diverse but more balanced. Medieval and modern doesn’t work very well. However, if you decide to mash them together as one style then that would work perfectly fine. Your skill as a builder and dedication is what will decide how your city will look in the end.

You don’t need to be the best builder in the world to make a good city. Its your dedication on how much time you will use that really makes the true difference. Be the first one to enjoy your craft and do not rush anything for anyone else. To enjoy your own craft is what matters, and with that comes motivation to create more. More is always good, a big city will become handy in the future. Don’t be stuck with the same builds when you can just expand your city. You can always come back to renovate your builds, don’t worry.

As for the more advanced builders, make sure to give it your 70%. You don’t need to go all inn. City building might get boring, so save your energy. A city is not like any other project. You are creating many builds and shaping a huge landscape. Here are some important tools I use to help me on my building:

MCedit: Lets me work on bigger mini projects and helps me do everything faster. It’s a different program that opens your Minecraft save file.

WorldEdit: I havnt used it in a while, but its basicly MCedit in the game itself

TMI mod: You can now select your items easier and give yourself different gamemode abilities + much more
(To understand how these mods can be installed, please find a tutorial on google or youtube (Recommened))

Here is also a list of what you should include in your city:
Financial district, historical district, suburbs, hospital, police station, fire station, town hall, park, transportation system (rail ways), schools, middle class district, harbor, industrial district, sewer system etc.

For more information and how you can become a good builder check out this book: Block city
Here is a list of cities that resembles my Brovillian building style. Have a look:
1) Broville
2) Redlight city
3) Vertoak city
4) Hoville
5) Reline city
6) City of Newisle

UNDER CONSTRUCTION (Step 4)
Some time has passed since you started working on your city. Your new city is now taking shape over time. These times can be the best and worst ones. Other real life distractions might occur, but never loose faith in your project and never give up. You had this all planned out well if you followed my instructions, you dedicated a lot of work into this. There is no time backing up, just keep going. You will see results guaranteed over time. But time is also important, think smart. Work when you can, use your time but be effective.

If you ever get bored building, take a break with some other activities. But don’t abandon your city, come back with full motivation to complete the project tasks.
FINISHING (Step 5)
Its closing season and you are now finished with your city. Step back and take a look at your wonderful craft. Go through your project once again and finish the last remaining details. You can also change your mind on some builds and rethink how they should look. As you are closing in on your project you can do the following; Post it online or make a new update for the city. If you can include more people to help you, then do that. Its more fun with other people. The process of working in team is different.
I have been giving people advice many times before, and most of the time I have seen progress. If you are a builder and wondering how to make a city, I hope this will work ou for you. Gather some information on cities, play some maps and start working. Its fun and keeps you busy for a while ^^

Helpful! I am making a PE city right now. Sad I can't use McEdit, my buildings are gonna be tiny. ;-(

Anyway, there's still hope. And can I ask something? Is there anything similar to McEdit in MCPE? I may use it to help me plot the landscape and dig out the rivers and oceans.

I have used a lot of different ways each time I start building on a empty land.
For me personally I like to do it in this order:
1) Plot the landscape
Start by connecting roads to each other. Mark the area you want to build on and try to plan out what you want in the different parts.
For example for a city or town you can mark where you want the downtown to be, harbor, upper class houses etc etc.
Then you start making roads that connects each district to each other. There are certain road standards that I use like big roads for downtown and main roads. Or small roads to connect other places. Near the roads, you start marking the builds you like to have. Like this: http://i.imgur.com/HV0K4i4.png
T
ry to curve some roads, add more dimension to the building plots and throw inn some parks or special builds that look different from the other ones.
2) Last detail work and start building
Now that you finished plotting you can add the smaller details you want like benches or other stuff to do some more detail work. You start using your building skills to finish the plots and just keep working from there.

This takes patience and you should apply to your own tempo. Its really not hard the first time you start vs at the end. Its just hard to believe it will look good, you just need to be patient and build a lot of stuff :) Good luck
