Before you read the below, please note that this is my first blog giving tips so please don't criticize me (unless it is good). If you have more or better tips or see an error, comment below! I'm sorry if I repeat myself in the blog. Please comment! I took 45 minutes to create this (not really, it took me an hour since I wasn't completely focusing on the blog).
PURPOSE OF THE BLOG:
1.) To get more ores out of your mining trip
2.) To not be a noob at mining
3.) To not die when you are mining
Key:
[R] = Recommended Item (Optional)
= Highly Recommended
[M] = Must bring
Diamond Mining (Peaceful Mode):
1.) Gather supplies!
a. [M] Pickaxes; 2-3 (Preferably 2 stone, 1 iron; stone for mining stone, iron for mining diamond)
b. [M] Torches; 25-64 (# of torches is preference only, more light, less light)
c. [R] Small stack of dirt or other easily breaking material; 20-64+ (Dirt is helpful to get out of deep caverns)
d.
Signs; 2-5 (Helps navigate through tunnels and caverns) (Helpful to bring stack of wood to craft into signs since signs take up space, remember the crafting table)
e.
Armor; Leather/Iron Boots, Chestplate (Helpful to not die easily from falls and lava)
f. [R] Potions; Fire Resistance, Instant Health (Fire Resistance against lava, Instant Health for falling)
g. [R] Bucket of Water; 1-2 (Traveling down steep holes or removing lava)
h.
Chest(s); 1-2 (Store items so you don't lose them)
2.) Tunnel Downward or Cavern/Ravine
MC Tip: NEVER dig directly down in a 1 block tunnel straight down! You may hit lava, large caverns, etc.
a. Tunneling Downward
Gather your supplies and dig a 1x2 hole downward. You can create the hole larger if you want to be cautious or want to gather more ores. Make sure you look downward and don't stand on where you are mining because you may fall in lava. When you get to Y=1-12, dig around the area to find diamonds. Place signs around the cavern or place your torches a certain way to remember where you came from. Please note that roughly 3 diamond ores spawn per chunk. The max amount of diamond ore you can find around the area is 8.
MC Tip: NEVER jump over lava when you are mining. On some occasions during mining, never jump across lava, even when it is only 1 block. Chances are that you forget to press the jump key, your computer lags out, or your power goes out. Always block the lava using blocks or buckets of water.
b. Cavern/Ravine
Gather your supplies and find a cavern by looking above ground or digging below (not recommended). You can also find a deep ravine but realize that a ravine holds 1-4 ores with 4 ores being the rarest. If you encounter a lava cavern, place blocks around the lava to reduce the chance of falling in and look for diamonds. You can also put down a bucket of water to remove lava. Place signs around the cavern or place your torches a certain way to remember where you came from.
In a ravine, place blocks down or a bucket of water to go down the ravine. Search for deep caves and find the correct height (altitude) to find diamonds. The chance of finding diamonds in a ravine is very unlikely however.
MC Tip: Dig around the ores roughly 1-2 blocks outward to find more ores! Most of the time, by mining a couple blocks below or around the ores will lead you to find more ores! Sometime this doesn't work but is very effective most of the time!
3.) Exit
a. Exit your cavern, ravine, or wherever you are and get up to the top. Make sure to take your items and use the signs or torches you placed to guide you out. If you have too many items, store your items at a certain reachable location and take the stuff you have up. Come back down when your inventory is empty to collect your items.
MC Tip: Careful with lava! Placing down a block or bucket of water on lava doesn't mean you're completely safe. By placing down a bucket of water, it turns the top of the lava to cobblestone or obsidian. If you dig down one block, you DIE from lava (unless you have resistance).
MC Tip: Enchant your pickaxe! Enchanting a pick with fortune can increase your chances to get more diamonds from ores! Use silk touch to bring your ores to your house and mine them there if you don;t want to risk losing your ores!
MC Tip: Store your items! Every time you get a ton of ores, store them in a chest especially in a lava area or a deep cavern.
Mining (Any) (Easy, Normal, Hard Mode):
1.) Gather supplies! (Take more supplies if the ores you are going to are deeper)
a. [M] Pickaxes; 2-3 (Any)
b. [M] Torches; 5-64+ (# of torches is by how deep the ores you want are)
c. [R] Small stack of dirt or other easily breaking material; 20-64+ (Dirt is helpful to get out of deep caverns)
d.
Signs; 2-5 (Helps navigate through tunnels and caverns) (Helpful to bring stack of wood to craft into signs since signs take up space, remember the crafting table)

f. [R] Potions; Fire Resistance, Instant Health (Fire Resistance against lava, Instant Health for falling)
g. [R] Bucket of Water; 1-2 (Traveling down steep holes or removing lava)
h.
Chest(s); 1-2 (Store items so you don't lose them)
i. [M] Sword; 1-2 (Kill mobs)
j. [M] Food; 5-30 (Killing mobs wears down your hunger, eat food to replenish your hunger!)
MC Tip: Watch your back! Turn around once every while to make sure you don't see mobs. Place down more torches to reduce the chance that mobs spawn.
2.) Dig Down or Cavern/Ravine
a. Dig Down
Dig down in a 1x2 or bigger way downward until you reach the correct altitude where the ores spawn. Dig around the level where the ores spawn. be wary of caverns, holes, and mobs!
b. Cavern
Search for a cavern and go in. Make signs to remember where you came from and place torches. Be careful though. Some cave systems are VERY LARGE and make take many weeks to completely discover. However, they hold many rare ores including diamond at the very bottom.
c. Ravine
Ravines are the best place for exposed ores such as coal or iron. There are 1-2 veins of gold typically of the bottom of the ravine. Ravines are very deep and very long to travel. Mobs spawn at the bottom of the ravine so be careful. Ravines are perfect for finding iron and coal that is easy to find and get to (kind of). Place blocks or a bucket of water to get to the ores and mine it out.
MC Tip: Know what ores come at which levels! Press the F3 key (on keyboard) and look at the top left corner of the screen. It shows the coordinates of where you are. Locate the y= section. This is the height of your location (Used to find what level ores spawn.
Coal: Found up to Y=128 (Y=29 is most common) - Any type (not hand)
Iron: Found up to Y=64 (Y=35 is most common) - Stone or better
Lapis Lazuli: Found up to Y=23 (Y=14 is most common) - Stone or better
Gold: Found up to Y=29 (Y=20 is most common) - Iron or better
Redstone: Found up to Y=15 (Y=8 is most common) - Iron or better
Diamond: Found up to Y=12 (Y=10 is most common) - Iron or better
