Minecraft PvP strategies & Counter techniques
Hey! Here's some tips to improve your pvp overall.
I'm just going to get right into it:

Different PvP Styles
Block-hitting (Only works for 1.8 and earlier pvp mechanics)
My advice is to only use this when you absolutely need to, for example when fighting a hacker or when you're on low health.
Block hitting is when you repeatedly right and left click at the same time, and if used correctly is very powerful, and good for getting away from cleanups and surviving other situations when you're at low health. It is known for being slightly over powered, because if the player gets a hit while you're blocking it reduces a good bit of damage.
How to counter: Block hitting is easiest countered by block hitting as well, because it evens out the defense advantage it gives.
Pros: Reduces knockback and damage taken, useful in crowded areas

Cons: Slower sprinting and walking

Strafing
Strafing is when you move, often from side to side but also in a circle around the target to avoid getting hit. This can't be used in crowded areas, and is easier to do on flat ground. This takes a while to master, but is 100% worthwhile and highly recommended.
How to counter: Strafing is meant to confuse you, so the best course of action is to try and confuse the attacker too, by going behind them giving you a couple extra hits. That causes them to take extra damage, and the player has to turn around to be able to attack you again.
Pros: Confuses the target, very effective

Cons: Useless in crowded areas, takes lots of time to learn

Straight Lining
Straight lining means that you go straight for the target, most commonly sprinting, and left click normally. Easy to learn as it's pretty much just to click.
How to counter: Use anything except straight lining back, because you will probably just end up trading hits and might make you lose the fight.

Pros: Deals much knockback
Cons: Easily countered

Different PvP tools
PvP tools can be extremely powerful if used correctly and with the right PvP style. The following items can be used with any PvP style, but might be harder with straight lining.

Fishing rod
If you want to be a good pvp player, you really need to be able to use a rod. It deals knockback to the target, letting you get hit combos (multiple hits in a row) if you're fast enough.
Useful level: Very high

Effort needed to master: High

Flint & Steel
Deals a few hearts of damage. If you miss when you first place it you can always try and hit the target back and into the fire.
Useful level: Pretty high
Effort needed to master: Medium

Lava bucket
Similar to the flint & steel, but has only one use and does not stack, so if you miss with the bucket you need to pick it up. If you hit, you can get the target stuck in the lava for a moment which deals a lot of damage. You can try and get the target hit back into it if you miss, but it won't make the target get stuck for very long.
Useful level: High
Effort needed to master: High

Bow
Great for fighting almost any type of hacker, and is a very effective ranged weapon but should not be used in meelee fights.
Useful level: Very high
Effort needed to master: Very high

A/N
I hope you found this useful, sorry for any grammar errors though as I didn't have time to double check the text.
