Here im just going to be talking about of the few tips i have that can improve your mining efficiency and speed, and increase your rare ore finds like iron and diamond. After just a few hours of using these simple methods i managed to find tens of diamonds and a few 64 stacks of iron, not to mention countless other ores.
Mining Strategies
Branch Mining:
First things first, make sure your below LAYER 17. Diamond only spawn below layer 17. I recomend starting your dig on layer 10 though, as most diamonds spawn between layers 7-13.
Secondly, once you've found your layer, start digging a small home base that will house your basic supplies and tools like furnaces and chests. Make sure you bring down enough supplies to insure you wont have to go back up. The most important resource to bring down would be wood.
Third, now to start with making a small shaft. Pick a spot pointing in any direction, and start digging a 3 by 3 hole straight forward. Once you've gone about 30-60 blocks you should be good for awhile.
Now pick any spot on either side of the shaft, and start digging a 2 tall hole forward for about 30-60 Blocks. Now repeat this method all along each side of the wall, but make sure that you leave at least 2 spaces in between each hole so that you can see all of the blocks surrounding it.
And finally, if you take enough time to do this, i can almost guarantee results :).
Quarry:
The quarry mining strategy seems to be less efficient, but it is a bit less time consuming in my opinion.
To quarry mine, is simple, simply mark a box in the ground (i recommend 9 by 9) and just dig that hole all the way down to bedrock, making 4 quarries all the way down to bedrock supplied me with only 3 diamonds, but 79 iron, and countless redstone and coal. The quarry mine is much less efficient in finding diamonds, but you find tons more iron and other resources.
It mainly depends on if your looking to find materials other than diamond or just to find diamond.
Mining and Shoveling Efficiency
One of the biggest tips i can offer to people to help them just mine faster or shovel faster, is when you are shoveling or mining, instead of just holding your mouse button down, release and click again after each block is destoryed. In doing this you eliminate the small gap of time in between mining each block.
Example:
I mined a 10 by 10 hole with the holding down method and the release and click method, over the course 5 minutes, and i mined about 22% more blocks with the release and click method then i did with hold and click method.
