modding TUT help

I am having trouble trying to create a customized modloader block on my own
every time i do try, Minecraft crashes and shuts off

can anybody send me a decent link to a blog or youtube video that is updated and works?
I use eclipse for a java editor so I don't have any errors.
recompiling and reobfuscating in MCP doesn't seem to be the problem

I could send you to an Updated tut on how to create armor ? I'm not very certain on how to create blocks, I'm always getting errors somewhere along the line.
