About 13 months ago, i started a project after discovering a tool called binvox. I had this idea of building a town on a whale and i found a perfect 3D model to do so.
The idea itself, although a potentially interesting concept (image), was not enough in my eyes. Eventhough the build on top of the whale itself wouldn't take that long to realize (image), it was not enough. It was not grand enough, not epic, not breathtakingly beautiful enough. So i sought for ideas and inspiration in the (not yet excisting) story around the whale, why a town on a whale? How does it fly? Why does it fly? How do you build a town on a whale? How do you life on a giant flying whale?
The project has since moved in a lot of different directions, the project went through atleast three different versions (image (all i could salvage)) and ironically in the end, not much of the lore i dreamed up around it made it in. In fact, you could say that the intended center piece, the whale, is in my eyes reduced to just a scenery feature now. The one feature which did make it in, partially, because it's surprisingly beautifull ingame with shaders are "clouds" of jellyfish (image), a minor stroke of genius in my opinion which i also featured in a build which was temporary on my PMC profile (image).
But back on topic, at first i wanted to combine the whale and the town on the back with an oriental inspired build (image), mostly because i wanted to make something oriental. Both builds on their own were just a meager "O.K." in my eyes, and they didn't work very well together. Fortunatelly, i have awesome twitter followers who assisted me with suggestions, one of those suggestions (click) which i had thought about and dismissed at the time was brought up again, and i was more susceptable to it, and it proved to be way cooler as i expected. The combining of the normal forests with supersized coral reefs is epic in my opinion.
One thing to realize is that i started this build before the tree repositories, the recreating the earth, and all other projects on my profile except for one, altsen upon brine! When i initially did this brainstorming, and sessions after that, i kept building on my own ideas and once you've dismissed an idea you're less likely to revisit it.
I'm quite happy to be able to say i'm finally satisfied with this project. It has made me consider to revisit an even older idea which has not seen the light of day either, so if you have an idea you like, stick to it. Don't publish it before you're satisfied with it, don't feel pushed, it's definatelly worth it to wait for the right time when all the pieces fall into place. And lastly, get some fresh eyes and ideas on your project when you're stuck!

- The build is not public at this time, but it is on my server which will soon be open to the public. When i do so i'll make a video on my youtube channel, so if you want to look at it ingame, subscribe if you expect you might miss the announcement.
- This project is not uploaded in the projects section because it does not meet the rules of the projects section. Incase you yourself are going to use binvox, you should first read the rules and see if they would apply to your build.
