The PlanetMinecraft instant chat messaging with other users on the site is amazing! It's a great way to interact with people and talk with people instantly!

However there are the downsides to the PMC chat also. For instance, the main one that people just can't stand is spamming. There is an abundant amount of spam that goes on daily on the chat that makes the chat quite annoying. I do realize there is the ignore option to ignore people however it's still annoying to think that people just come on the chat to spam.

Other things that the chat includes is advertising. If you go on the chat you will ALWAYS see some type of link shown in the box telling people to go like and favorite their submissions. This really gets annoying because one, people really just want XP to rank up and two, they usually do a like-for-like, similar to that of YouTube where it is sub-for-sub. Like-for-likes are really annoying because people don't RIGHTFULLY earn those likes, all it takes is for someone to share a link and say, "If you like this submission, I will like one of yours."

Like I said before, there is the ignore option for chatting but something really needs to be done about advertising. Removing the whole URL option will be stupid because some links are meant to be shared that are not submissions on PMC. I currently have no proposal but this advertising really needs to stop. The chat is for people to interact and talk about anything they want, like I said before, not for people to advertise servers, projects, texture packs etc.

If you think about it, people take advantage on the chat. Since these things aren't allowed on the forums, people think it's alright to do it on the chat. It's kind of like saying, "If mom says no, ask dad." People that know that this isn't allowed on the forums follow the rules because they don't want to be temporarily banned from it for not following the rules. This type of system could be added into the chat, where people know that they aren't allowed to post links that are for their submissions. One problem for that is, not as many Mods go on the chat as they do on the forums so it won't be easy implementing the same technique.

Obviously Cyprezz could add this to the rules of the chat, but I guarantee it won't be payed attention upon. Especially when there are no Moderators on the chat. That's actually when most rule-breaking goes on.

I would be interested to see your thoughts on this and what should be done. Thanks.

Normally, concerning with chat, site and forum rules also apply to chat.

But they aren't exactly cared about as much as the forum and the site. There is a huge section of rules for the whole site, yes, but for some reason people think that on the chat nothing matters so people do whatever they want.

Then that is when they receive their well deserved punishment.

Yeah, however like I said in the blog, usually Moderators hang around the forums or patrol the site, that gives those people in the chat room to do whatever they want. I think we should have some type of reporting system but that could turn out wrong because no one has any physical proof unless they took a screenshot.

I've always been recommending a in-chat reporting system. The way I picture it the report will contain a line that a user typed, a long with the reporting user's reason for the report.
Normally with these, it would require the reported user to be kicked out (since that is the only thing that we can do to punish them).
But here's the problem: for us to ban a user, they have to be present at the same time we issue a kick. If we get to a in-chat report too late, and the user is already gone, we can't do anything about it unless Cyprezz put them on the perma ban list.

With that, the only solution would be to have more chat mods on, or to have the other mods (like myself) reminded that we need to be in chat more.

The downside to this though, I think, would be chat trolls. You are abiding by the rules and doing nothing wrong, but a chat troll decides, "I don't like them", clicks report and you get kicked. Even if their reason is horrible and you don't get banned, you'd still get kicked, which would be very annoying.
