Moving away from the attacker in close combat normally is a bad idea in minecraft. There is a momentun in the battles. The goal is to deliver more crits than the opponent. You get crits if you get your enemie airborne so he cannot hit back. By charging all the time, you can keep and gain momentum in a battle. If you lose the momentum, you can either block hit to break the streak of the enemies attack or try to strafe and attack from behind or 90 degree angle moving towards the enemy again. How you can tell if you lost momentum? Watch the battle in the open here in this video. The situation where i run away and escape with one heart. You can see when I attack the guy, I get more hits and push him back, then he sidesteps a bit and suddently my health starts dropping like crazy and he gets a lot of hits in. That is when he gaine the upper hand. If that happens and you have no space to eveade, run and get away to recover. It takes a while to get a feel for it when the momentum shifts, but you can see it nicely in this battle.
