many years ago, when Steve was not a human, but merely a star in the sky, waiting to be born. back when he didn't roam the lands destroying everything in his path like the noob he was, stealing from innocent villagers houses and rendering the villagers unable to live. without Steve, the villagers thrived, always blessing the ground they walked on, the stream they drank from, and even the air they breathed in (not sure if that is grammatically correct but YOLO i got swag).
along with these harmless villagers lived the mighty iron golems, kind and loving yet VERY over-protective. the real question is - what were their purpose?

MINERS:
think about it - such a bulky, hard working and also extremely willing creature would do anything to impress villagers-even if that means reproducing (not in that way, that's just eww don't even think about it, i meant by mining even more iron, just stop)
they must have at least twice the strength of a villager, probably more, and be able to withstand big drops, creeper attacks and general mobs, however would not do well with lava (melting).

BUILDERS
incredibly large, able to reach up high to place blocks and easily get the blocks due to their strength and general awesomeness (the blocks offer themselves up to the greaterawesomeness, just in case you were wondering(that's right, you aren't awesome(that's right again, brackets, inside brackets, inside brackets(inside brackets(bracketception)))))not very imaginative though, only about three house types, correct me if i'm wrong.

PROTECTORS
this is probably the most likely scenario - able to launch mobs into the air and cause major damage to any mob they set their glowing, bloodhungry (bloodthirsty is too mainstream) eyes upon. nothing stands a chance against this beast of collateral( i just needed an excuse to put that word in, itdoesn'tmake sense but oh well, i just really like the word collateral) damage. the thing that makes this most likely is that there is actually proof,Googleit.
