One of my favourite pastimes.
Section the first:
What to do/not to do:
Do:
Ask for help! If you need help with anything, be it lore related, rules related, or whatever, ask someone! Many of us will gladly help!
Obey the rules! Self explanatory, goes a long way to making friends!
Use ((to signify OOC (out of character) talk in an IC (in character) thread, followed by )) when finished. ((like so)) Or some other variation, [[text here]], (text here), and [text here] are also all used.
Use your best grammar!
Do not:
Op/godmod/metagame, unless told you may by the thread/server owner(henceforth, the "GM".
Control another's character, unless given explicit permission by them AND the GM person.
Kill another's character, unless give
Derail the topic. This leads to the death of many a thread, including RP threads.
Spam/Double post. Yes, this is sometimes unavoidable, but delete the second post when it happens ASAP.
Section the second:
Finding roleplay opportunities:
For pen and paper roleplaying and LARPing, try your nearest gaming store. Mingle, make friends!
Here on PMC, check the server recruitment for RP servers.
On forums, check to see if they have a section for forum roleplays! We here at PMC do. Here's a couple:

Section the third:
Running an RP thread/server:
DO NOT godmod yourself, unless it is to ban someone from the thread/kill off their character because they did something bad. Excessive use of godmodding will result in the death of your thread. I personally use "Your character gets hit by a meteor and dies" to solve the banning/killing problem.
Use your friends! Name more then one acceptor! It helps a bunch! Take away power from corrupt acceptors. Make a rule you can overrule an acceptor if they accept someone who you don't think should be accepted.
Let players have as many characters as they want! Limit not their creativity!

OOC knowledge =/= IC knowledge. You may know something your character doesn't (you probably do) and vice-versa. Using OOC knowledge to further IC characters is referred to as Metagaming.
