Story:
I wake in darkness to the sound of a door latching. I can’t see a thing, but one thing’s for sure: this is not my bed. I try to sit up, but my hands and feet are secured tightly. I feel a scream building slowly in my lungs, but I keep quiet. I try to look at the room around me. A small room, with mossy walls. The walls are cold, very cold. Suddenly, the room slightly lights up.
I start to look at what is inside the room. Everything I see in the room is the bed I’m chained to and a door in one of the walls. I notice a button
on the wall on my left side right next to my leg. I move my leg towards it, but I am afraid to press it, thinking it’s some sort of trap. I decide that I have no other options and I hit the button with my leg.
Suddenly, my hands and legs have been released. I start to move freely around the room. I go through the door, where I find a ladder leading up. I climb up the ladder and find myself in a tunnel. I walk to the
end of the tunnel, where another ladder is located, this time going down.
The ladder leads me to another room, where there is a desk, a bed like the one I was on and a button below the desk. I press the button and a passage opens. In the passage there is a long staircase leading up. At the top of the staircase, another tunnel. But at the end of this one, there is no ladder. Just a hole leading to what seems to be another room. I decide that I have no other choice but to go down, no matter how deep the hole is.
After jumping, I feel a pain in my right leg. I must have injured it when I jumped. Despite that, I decide to go on. In this room, there is only a door. I go through the door and find myself in another room, but this room is very strange. It has an entrance to a passage, but it’s high on the wall. I try jumping to it, but no success – my leg is broken.
“I’ve come this far, I can’t give up now” – I tell myself.
I try and try again with no success, but after the thought of death coming to me, I succeed. I start walking forward in the long passage, hoping to find a way out.
While walking, I start to think about things. I keep trying to remember
What was before waking up in this horrid place. Who was I? Did I have a family? How did I end up in this place?
When I stopped thinking, I noticed that my leg is bleeding. If I don’t get medical attention soon, I don’t think I’ll make it…
“Finally, the end of this damn tunnel!” – I say to myself.
Just like before, there is a ladder leading down. The ladder leads me to a hallway with rooms on the sides and a wall at the front.
“Patient 001” – I read the sign above the door to the first room to my left.
All of the doors have similar signs. In the last one to my right, I see a button. I go inside and pressed it. The button opens a passage where the wall at the front was.
At the end of the passage, a door leading to a large room. The room has a table in the middle. There is blood on the table. It looks like some sort of operation table. On my left there is a pile of dead bodies.
“Who would do this? Who would do these horrible things?” – I keep asking myself.
I sit down to think. My leg still hurts a lot. I start to remember faces of a woman who looks about my age and two faces of two little girls.
“Is this my family I’m remembering?” – I keep asking myself.
There are no doors in the room – nothing.
“Is this it? Am I going to die here, not knowing anything?”
I look up at the ceiling and I see a button. I try to reach it, but no luck. I stand on the table and I barely reach the button. After pressing it, a small passage opens in one of the walls. How much more of this will I have to survive?
The passage leads to a room with broken stairs. The only way I can get up is by jumping to up the stairs. I jump, but I feel very weak after jumping to the second stair.
“No! I can’t die, not here, not now.”
Finally, I get to the end of the staircase. I am at a house, I can see light coming out of the windows. I walk out of the house, but I can’t hold on much longer. I look at the fields outside. It all seems so beautiful, it reminds me of…
I wake up in the hospital. The two girls and the woman I thought of are here, next to me…
A month later, I’m back to living an ordinary life in an ordinary city.
I tried telling the police about the house and that awful place, but they said that someone found me in an empty field.
I still can’t quite remember why that field seemed so familiar, it’s like, I’ve been there before. Everyone tells me that I should just be glad I’m back to being with my family again, but something doesn’t seem right about them either. It’s like I’m living a different life then before I woke up in that horrid place…
Months have passed, I have stopped thinking about all of that regarding the place I was in. I’m living a happy life now. I go to check my mail and I find a letter. I open it and start reading.
“Dear Patient 005
We sincerely hope you are enjoying your new life. Do not think about what was before all of this, before we helped you because you will not succeed in remembering. You may think that we are all insane, but remember – you are the one who had to go to the Sanatorium...right?”
