Sleeping Pills - Part 1: Insomnia



Delta 202 is a male middle-class citizen in Sector - 1A. He works in Human Resource Department as an assigner, his job is to assign a new job and sector to a new born genetically modify human infant so that they can be prepared for when they grow up, they can become a functioning member of “The City” the only human society left on the barren wasteland we all once called “Earth”. The City is only separated from the wasteland by a massive titanium wall that was built around the city after the “Great Collapse”. Delta 202’s daily routine goes as follow: He wakes up at precisely 5:00 AM. He takes a shower and eat breakfast from a container that looks like a toothpaste tube sent to him by the Food Department, it contains just enough nutrients to keep him alive and functioning for the whole day. After that he take the high-speed metro train to Human Resource Department building. When he arrives, he takes the elevator up to floor 12 and receive order from the Management Department and start working until precisely 6 PM. the time when his shift is over. After that he takes the same high-speed metro train that he used to get to his work place back to his apartment. After he arrive, he prepared himself for sleep but before he can do that, he must take a special pill given to him by the Medical Department first, this special pill is said to help prevent citizen in The City from changing into a mutant creature that has been known as “Howler” due to contaminated air coming into The City from the wasteland. These pills also help citizen sleep better as well. Finally, after taking his pill, he goes to sleep and wake up the next day repeating the same exact routine again and again and again...

But today something unusual happen to his usual daily life. In the evening, while Delta 202 is waiting at the high-speed metro station to get back to his apartment as usual, another citizen accidentally bumps into him, both apologize to each other and moved onto their own way. When he finally arrives in front of his apartment room, he checked his own pockets for his wallet which contain his ID card, to his surprise, his pockets are empty. His wallet must have been stolen by the person who bumps into him earlier. He is shocked because crime rate in The City is always at 0 since The City was built but there’s no time for thinking about that. Without his ID card, he can’t enter his apartment room. He must find a way to get in his room as soon as possible so that he can take his daily dose of pills. He starts knocking on neighboring rooms to ask if they can spare him some pills, not to his surprise no one answer because they all already went to sleep. As the time goes by, from calmly knocking on doors, goes to slamming in panic and rage as he fears that he will change into a Howler soon if he not taking his pill. Still, everyone seems to be in a deep sleep. After a while, he gave up and come back to sit in front on his room, exhausted but still can’t sleep. He is starting to feels a terrible headache. It’s almost midnight now, he feels like he is fainting and losing his consciousness but his eyes are still wide open…
