Support beams©--- A Minedeas 2 contest participants article

I think that Minecraft mining is, and might be too easy for players to pull off. You don't have much threat (aside from monsters) when digging up ores and minerals. It is easy to mine mineshafts and just get away with it without any penalty whatsoever. This is where my idea comes in. It makes mineshafts harder to create and make underground exploration more difficult.
My idea is of course, SUPPORT BEAMS!

While mining mineshafts, you will need to place down these support beams in order to assure, that the mineshafts ceiling doesn't fall down upon you and your head. The falling stones will act like sand or gravel blocks. A 2x1 will be a thing of the past and support beams will force that player will have to dig 2x2 (or bigger mineshafts), in order to place down support beams. Suport beams can be used to reinforce houses but nobody will do that. A much more complex Physics system will have to be put into minecraft tough wich will be painful, beacause of Java.


Crafting:
A "Beam part" can be crafted with "Beam sticks". "Beam sticks" can be crafted by placing a wooden plank in a crafting grid (any formation)


A "Support beam" can be crafted using 2 "Beam parts" (any formation)

Removing a beam:

Once placed down a beam will look like any other fence(or a better model added in the next update ;P), but attaching a lead to it and moving away (pulling it) from the beam will cause it to break, be aware, beacause then the ceiling of the Mineshaft will come down collapsing and suffocating you!

Support beams on houses:

Support beams can be used to also support houses and other closed spaces aside from mineshafts. Blocks in those houses will also behave like gravel when a support beam is
removed.
