Starting your life on a survival server is always hard.
Especially on servers where pvp is allowed, and you get no tools on first join. So here some tips for the first days.
1. Never build close to spawn on servers
that will make your house easy to get griefed if you can't protect it.
2. The first thing you got to do is find wood,
wood is the most important part on surviving and that's because you can't make any tools or get cobble for stone tools without it.
3. Don't try to kill or attack any monsters with raw hands.
You have a chance of 30% to get killed by that.
4. Don't let others come to you via teleportation or any other way
they may kill you even if they don't hold anything and hey don't wear any armor.
5. Make a temp base to skip the night.
That will prevent you from getting killed from monsters an it will give you time to cook food or mine and make tools.
6. On daytime kill animals that will give you food
(chickens are a easy target) and if you can, use a sword of any kind (makes animals drop more animals.) if your alone on the server you can make a bed and turn it to day faster by sleeping on it.
7. Get every nature good like sugar canes and coca that you will use later on to farm.
8. IMPORTANT! If server alows you to protect your land and there is no way someone can over claim your land like in factions server then make a on land home away from spawn as mentioned above. If there is no way to protect it then go far underground and if posible go under water. I mean if you can go under a lake or better under a sea and dig to bedrock and there will be your base. This process is done because people who use x ray can trace your base.
9. Check if server has any way to protect chests and furnaces if it does use it.
10. Build a farm in your base and put the goods from step 7
And don't forget to set your home so you can be teleported there with a command. Its also good to do faaaaar trips like walk away from your house if you first can use a command to teleport to it. These walks will help you get food, wood, and such stuff.

in my case i got griefed underground by xray and then i got another idea.
build my house underground, under lava (xray cant see thought and the once who can dont want to see through bcause they may step in lava.)
