Heeeeello everyone! So this is a fanfic based off a game called ''Just Beats and Shapes''. I'm using Tempex's playthrough (you can find it here!) for this one. I am also using the yamis' (Yami, Bakura, and Marik) Japanese ancient names (so Atemu, Akefia, and Mariku respectively) and this is post-canon.

This may seem like romance between a yami and a hikari, but I am not trying to directly convey it that way, since the yamis tend to be naturally overprotective of their hikaris in the fandom. It just depends on how you want to look at it. Just warning you there.

(P.S., this is still WIP, but I will be updating quite a bit very quickly, but I am too lazy to bother with the dividers, so have fun xD)

Anyways, I hope you all enjoy this very long one-shot, The Hikari Tree!

τhε hικαrι τrεε

Seven years ago, a boy by the name of Yugi Mutou solved an ancient artifact called the Millennium Puzzle. Two years later, he freed the ancient spirit inside, whose name and memories had been lost, but recovered. Atemu, the Nameless Pharaoh of Egypt.

Now, five years have passed since Atemu crossed over to the afterlife. Ironically, the Thief King Akefia and the Tomb Keeper Mariku - Marik’s ancient self - had been allowed in as well. But they weren’t able to keep tabs on the real world. So the three usually fretted over their hikari’s safety.

When a surprise came to them one day.

Waking up from an unusual sleep (since spirits didn’t usually sleep), Atemu groaned and sat up. To his surprise - and slight horror - he was in a dark expanse. Moving around, he wondered where he was, and discovered that he was only able to move in a 2D-like way.

Nearby, he spotted a white triangle. Curiously, he ran over to it and reached for it. It floated up a bit, spun in the air, and went right into his body! His body somehow absorbed the triangle, much to the former pharaoh’s confusion, and the landscape seemed to be reset in a wave of blue particles.

Suddenly, he saw red objects (more like chainsaws!) head towards him. Carefully, he dodged the objects. When music was heard, he discovered two things: one, he was in modern attire: black jeans, black sleeveless top, and dark blue sleeveless jacket, plus black boots and a black choker. Two, he had a small earbud in his right ear, and his earrings and royal jewelry were gone. The only thing left of his past self was the tanned skin tone.

Past the possibly dangerous objects was the triangle yet again. He ran forward, dodging the red spiky circles and grabbed the triangle yet again, which was absorbed once more.

The music picked up a bit more, plus the projectiles; now, small red bullet-like objects flew out, not directly aiming at him, instead of the red chainsaws. Yet again, he headed towards the newly appeared triangle.

The level reset once more; now, lasers appeared, threatening to zap the former pharaoh, while the projectiles emerged from the exploding chainsaws. The triangle was claimed once more, and Atemu assumed that the triangle would be a pivoting point in this new realm.

The next stage was fairly simple, just more lasers. The next one after that got a bit more complex: now, giant circles exploded, threatening to implode on Atemu. With the techno-like music thumping in his ear, he quickly claimed the triangle.

Now presented a challenge to the Pharaoh: two walled of unmoving spiky balls. Atemu made a confused noise. Out of the blue, three birds appeared and flew through the barrier. Atemu moved around a bit before quickly dashing forward. Grinning, he dashed past the barriers, delighted to discover this new ability.

Now, the barriers were moving, and right at him. Atemu grunted as he dashed past. Dashing into the triangle, he grabbed it into his hands, and let it absorb into his body. Now, exploding circles at the top and bottom wouldn’t let him there, but he dashed through the moving barriers once more and held the triangle.

Now, it was just the circles. But said circles quickly started enclosing in on him, making him nervous. Confined in the middle, the Pharaoh held up his arms to block the onslaught of lights, and now beams, projectiles of bullets and little saws, plus exploding circles, came at him. With a small yelp, he discovered the beat in the earbud was timed to the opposing forces, and quickly dodged (which included dashing) the possible hurtful things.

Once they were all gone and done with, Atemu passed a small dotted blue line, which made everything clear (presumably, the ex-pharaoh mused, the end of the level), and he snagged the triangle that floated around. The triangle went into him, and a bright white light encompassed him.

When he blinked his eyes open, the light was gone, and above him was the triangle he had just claimed. He wondered where the triangle was going, as it flew away, leaving a small dotted path for him to follow, with circles attached onto places here and there. Following the path in his 2D-like movement style, he saw three bigger circles, and gaped when the triangle flew into the first circle, which expanded for it to fly into.

He stood there for a few moments, before going to move over it. The circle opened up for him to possibly jump into. Above him, was a title, the song title, he presumed. After looking at the other two, he shrugged, and jumped into the first entrance.
CHRONOS
Danimal Cannon & Zef
This level was a bit different from the first one. For starters, there was a progress bar he could see on his left arm, tracking his progression in the level, which showed what he presumed were checkpoints, five in total.

‘’Oi! Baka Pharaoh!’’ oh yeah, and somehow Akefia was here. Atemu looked over to the left to see the former Thief King who was standing off a bit. He was dressed in dark blue jeans, a white and blue striped shirt, and brown boots, plus a little black earpiece in his right ear which Atemu could spy. He looked pretty much like he did while possessing Ryou, Atemu had to be honest.

‘’Can you talk? At all?’’ Akefia taunted. Atemu rolled his eyes.

'
’I’ve been stuck in this dimension for the past five minutes with no one to talk to, and then you appear out of the blue in this new level. Oh, by the way, dodge the red bullets,’’ Atemu warned as the beat started up. Akefia was confused, then quickly noticed the projectiles.

Red bullet-like things came at them in a bit of an erratic and fast pattern. Red triangles flew forward and released a barrage of bullets as well, which the two dodged. Atemu dashed out of the way, and Akefia did too, yelping slightly.

‘’Oh yeah, and you can dash,’’ Atemu added, and Akefia shot him a glare. They passed the first first checkpoint, which revealed the laser beams to appear.

‘’How many things are there in this supposed game?!’’ Akefia yelled, and Atemu shrugged. The exploding spiky balls reappeared soon after, but one charged up to right after they made it past the checkpoint, which made both of them yelp as they dodged the onslaught of bullets and beams. They both got hit, which hurt. Quite a bit.

‘’These things hurt like bloody hell!’’ Akefia grunted, and Atemu had to agree. Dodging the lasers and erratic bullets, the two tried to keep themselves from getting kicked in the butt. The exploding circles came back again, much to Atemu’s chagrin.

‘’Oh wait! The evil things go to the beat!’’ Akefia realized, and Atemu facepalmed.

‘’Yeah, they do, thief king,’’ Atemu shot back, making Akefia growl. They crossed another checkpoint, and the exploding disks came at them, releasing the bullet projectiles upon implodement. And then the beams came back. Except they were bigger.

‘’Why are they bigger?!’’ Akefia questioned.

‘’How should I know?!’’ Atemu retorted as they tried to escape the wide beam barrage. It only got worse when the projectiles returned, making their dodging lives harder.

'
’Ah crap!’’ Atemu grunted as he got corners and blasted. His square of health on his left hand was down to one piece. Crossing the final checkpoint and the finish line, their squares of health went back to normal, and Akefia grabbed the triangle, which went into his body, startling him.

‘’Don’t worry, it’s supposed to do that,’’ Atemu replied to Akefia’s unspoken question once the bright light died down, revealing them to be back at the main traveling area. A large, more fancy circle appeared out of their movement range, and three triangle slots were below it, ‘connecting’ the two. Only one slot was filled, however.

'
’Okay, let’s get the next two and figure out why we’re here,’’ Atemu said, moving over to the next slot.

‘’You don’t know?’’ Akefia deadpanned.

‘’How should I?! I just woke up after apparently sleeping! We don’t sleep!’’ Atemu yelled. Akefia grunted at the loudness of his voice.

‘’Okay, sheesh, calm down. Look, the Tomb Keeper’s gotta be here somewhere, and maybe the Priest. Think you can keep your sanity together until then?’’ Akefia told the former king. Atemu meekly nodded. ‘’Good. Next level.’’

MILKY WAY
Bossfight
‘’Okay, I could get used to this beat,’’ Atemu reasoned, smirking a bit as the level’s music started playing in his ear.

‘’Yo! Atemu, Akefia!’’ a voice called, and they turned to their right to see Mariku dashing up to them. Akefia gave him a high-five, the two grinning like mad.

Mariku, like the other two, was dressed in a simple modern outfit: tan cargo pants, light gray t-shirt, plus brown boots and black fingerless gloves that went a little past his wrists. In his left ear, was a black earbud which wrapped around his ear.

The two caught him up to date on what was going on (or, at least, all that they knew) as they dodged the squares that appeared out of nowhere. Thankfully, like with the lasers and exploding circles, they could see where they would appear before they truly spawned. Bigger ones appeared alongside the normally sized small ones.

‘’How many things implode in this stupid place?!’’ Akefia yelled as the exploding disks reappeared, and long snake-like objects came at them from ahead. Mariku ran into a square, while Akefia got hit by a snake.

Eventually, it just dropped back to the exploding disks and circles, but Atemu got hit by a circle, unable to dash out of the blast radius in time. A large circle in the middle exploded outwards, forcing the three to flee into the corners. They passed another checkpoint, which made the original beat return, along with the first wave of exploding disks, spawning squares, and snakes. With one final square border attack, the three made it across the end line, and Mariku grabbed the triangle, which went into him, and engulfed the three in a bright light.

‘’WHAT JUST HAPPENED?!’’ Mariku screeched, making the other two wince. Atemu explained about the triangles as the second one, the one Mariku had claimed, flew into the second slot.

‘’Enough of that. One more stupid floating triangle and we can find out way back!’’ Akefia whooped, and the three made their way into the third slot and jumped down the opened circle.

‘’I seriously hope this is the last level, I’m getting a little tired from these challenges,’’ Atemu muttered. The beat started out simple enough, with slightly expanding exploding circles. Then, after a small weird intermissing of bullets and saws on the top and bottom, a large assault of bullets came at them, along with sticks that appeared and then moved towards them.

‘’This is annoying,’’ Akefia growled as the exploding projectile disks came into play as well. All three got hit, knocking a piece of their square health down. Soon lasers came into play, and they passed the second checkpoint.

Everything went away, and the wide lasers came out, firing all over the place. Mariku and Atemu got hit, leaving them with one piece. Soon after, the exploding expanding circles came back into play, along with the imploding disks. They finally crossed the line, and Atemu grabbed for the third triangle, snagging it, shining them in the bright light, and returning all their health back to normal.

‘’Okay, that’s the third,’’ Atemu said, and they quickly moved up the new path to the larger circle, which expanded open for them.

‘’I have a bad feeling about this,’’ Mariku gulped, and the other two looked to see the song title screen was red, not blue. They all looked at each other and nodded, jumping down.

LONG LIVE THE NEW FRESH
Danimal Cannon
The song started simply enough: a small circle with small little horns fired out disks from its horns, occasionally in rapid succession. Akefia quickly took notice of the absence of checkpoints in the level and alerted the other two.

‘’It has an eye?’’ Atemu questioned when the small circle gained a dot in the middle of itself. The exploding disks came after the trio as well, while the circle started spinning around. Small lines went out, allowing the trio to dodge the balls the thing pulled towards itself, and the more it pulled, the bigger it grew.

The thing became a monster: two sharp teeth and a determined evil eye. Oh yeah, and the arms made out of disks. It stomped its arms down on the ground, making waves that were red, so supposedly harmful, which was confirmed when it hit Mariku.

‘’Ooooh, its angery!’’ Mariku taunted. All sorts of lasers and exploding circles threatened the trio, and one of the lasers got Akefia. The monster shot its arm out to the wall, creating a reverberating effect, which did strike Atemu. The monster’s arm continued to reappear and strike the walls, while its other arm swung around.

A second arm reappeared on the monster, while the original second arm kept reappearing and striking. The three ancient spirits proceeded to dash out of the way of all three arms, and the third arm struck the monster, but that only made it angrier.

‘’We made it angrier,’’ Atemu cringed as four arms appeared out of the monster, threatening to impale them all while the last arm continued to strike. Suddenly, the monster reverted to its original state with no eye at all. But soon, it grew in size and regained its face, firing beams out in all directions, which struck Akefia and Mariku. It soon gained arms as well and did its little ‘shoot my arm out and swing the other one’ thing, before both disappeared and it did a full sweep with a large laser from its eye.

It continued to just blast the trio with lasers and arms and waves, one of which almost hit Atemu, but he dashed out of the way thankfully. All four of the monster’s arms came out, intending to strike the trio, but instead hit itself, making it disappear.

‘’Woot!’’ Mariku and Akefia cheered, doing a chest bump as Atemu looked on, rolling his eyes with a small smile. They crossed the line and all three grabbed the triangle. When they returned to the main map, they were in for a surprise.

The triangle floated up into the and quickly spun after a few seconds, revealing three to split from it. But the biggest shock were the small curled-up silhouettes the three Egyptian spirits could see; it was their hikaris! The triangles spun before lining up in an upside-down line, their tips on one another, and it struck the gateway the trio was standing at. It unveiled the world in a bright blue light.

A small white pixel appeared in the black expanse, and expanded to reveal all three triangles, which had formed into a large white and blue tree, the shadowed hikaris inside, slumbering peacefully. The sun patted the tree quite a bit before the former yamis were shot out from the tree, landing onto the ground in front of the three.

‘’Okay, that’s a surprise,’’ Akefia had to admit, and the other two had to agree, staring at the tree with their hikaris had passed. Stuck inside the tree for that brief amount of time, they had gotten caught up on everything that had happened in the modern world: five years had passed, but why the hikaris were now part of the giant triangle tree, the spirits didn’t know.

A small path appeared to their right, and they started to follow it as the credits played overhead. Quickly making their way to the cliff, where a small square creature was waiting, plus a triangle, Akefia activated this triangle, which summoned a slide, and the small creature picked Atemu and Akefia up, while Mariku willingly got on its head, and the blocky thing slid down and into the ocean, getting up onto an island after letting the other three down onto it.

The second triangle - located on the island - was activated by Mariku. This summoned a weird happy-looking spiky creature, and a bridge to a cave across the ocean. The trio and the creature that had held them - now nicknamed Kyaria by Mariku - crossed the bridge and entered the cave, descending into inside.

The third triangle was there, and Atemu activated this one, which let the mushrooms inside pop to life, and the words ‘IT’S OVER’ appeared above the triangle. But, when the triangle went to restore the spiky creature, it impaled the triangle on its head.

‘’Ehhhhm…’’ all three were speechless, but not for long. The message from before suddenly gained a question mark, and the spiky creature transformed into one of the monster’s arms! The arm soon transformed into the monster itself, who was out for a vengeance on the trio. Kyaria quickly grabbed the three and began fleeing, but was rammed by the monster, who started to destroy the path the trio had traveled on.

Unable to move as the monster punched the happy spiky creature to pretty much death, Kyaria swam across the ocean to pick the three up, allowing them to escape from another attack by the monster onto them. The monster fired its eye beam at some credits, which Akefia snorted at.

Then, the monster made the worst move of all: it went for the tree their hikaris were made of. Stretching and pulling, with the sun hiding behind the mountains in fright, the monster pulled the Hikari Tree from its place, and plunged the world back into darkness.

Now faced with the monster, who was aiming to claim the Hikari Tree and its inhabitants, the three yamis entered into yet another Boss Gateway, as Atemu called them, to save their lighter halves.

NEW GAME
Nitro Fun
The monster encompassed the Hikari Tree, which was trying to attack them with beams. The monster shoved the Tree down into the ground, trying to hit the former spirits, but they dodged out of the way in time. The creature - which Akefia decided to call Fuhai on a limb - began to pound it into the earth as beams continued to try and land a hit on the yamis.

Suddenly, when the Tree was fully into the ground, Fuhai temporarily fled, and the Tree lifted from out of the ground. Atemu, Akefia, and Mariku watched with horror-wide eyes as their hikaris were corrupted and the Tree as well. The Tree began to make a tower of sorts with its godlike power, and managed to score a hit on Akefia who was unprepared for the assault of beams and spikes, along with Mariku.

The Tree split into three pieces, each piece holding a hikari, and tried to attack the yamis with projectiles. Two of the pieces disappeared, while Fuhai grabbed the third and used its projectiles to feed itself and make itself grow stronger. Atemu tried to stop it, but was knocked back, losing a piece of his health square.

Fuhai mutated into a new monster, one with more horns, two wide eyes, and a demonic grin as it bopped the beat, unfortunately that wasn’t great since it bopping sent out waves that threatened to murder the trio. Fuhai gained four arms and still bopped, while throwing itself into walls to cause water waves to appear.

‘’Okay, this dude needs to chill,’’ Atemu muttered as the monster flew all over the place in its slightly sadistic rage, hitting Akefia. It ate a corrupted triangle (one of the smaller non-hikari holding ones) and gained the ability to transform itself into a small cannon that shot out spike disks, which, yes, tried to kill the trio. It actually landed a hit on Mariku this way.

Its final try on them was doing the same thing, but with circling bullets. It ate another triangle, and began to absorb the bullets, and the ancient spirits as well. It morphed into a cannon and sent the trio flying, and Atemu fell unconscious from the stress finally.
‘’Oi… oi! OI! BAKA! GET UP!’’

Atemu’s eyes fluttered open to see Akefia hovering over him with a slight snarl. The former pharaoh groaned and sat up, holding his head.

‘’Wh-what happened…?’’ he questioned. Akefia filled him in on the events that had transpired: they had been launched to an unknown island, and Kyaria had been spotted, presumably unconscious while holding onto a tree as a raft, floating away. Meanwhile, a Level Gateway had floated over to them, and Mariku had volunteered to go inside while Akefia waited for Atemu to recover.

‘’Mariku’s inside? Alone?!’’ Atemu yelped, and tried to stand up, but fell due to lack of energy, almost falling unconscious.

‘’Keep it together, Atemu, you’re too weak to do anything,’’ Akefia scorned him. Atemu sighed and nodded. ‘’I’ll go in there and help. You stay here and rest.’’

‘’Alright. But be careful,’’ Atemu warned and Akefia nodded, jumping over the Level Gateway, which opened up, allowing Akefia to join Mariku.

THE ART OF WAR

Chipzel

Inside wasn’t too bad; the music was pretty calm, and there were mainly circle barriers that disappeared and reappeared. In the middle, circled revolved around something which shot out circle projectiles in a spiral. The barriers reformed horizontally across the middle, and the duo dashed between the large circles on the top and bottom, since Mariku was on the top, and Akefia on the bottom. Akefia accidentally hit a circle, while Mariku had already gotten hit earlier.

They played this game before the circles disappeared out of their sight, and most of the barrier vanished. A large circle encompassed the two in the middle, and then disappeared, allowing Mariku to claim the triangle.

The triangle built a bright over the water, but they would have to jump to avoid the enemies. Akefia went to retrieve Atemu, but found him already standing and waiting. The trio crossed the bridge silently, jumping over their spiky enemies.

On the next island, three small pieces floated, trapped in a container of sorts. ‘’Pirate ship!’’ Mariku whooped, and Atemu shook his head. In order to unlock the pieces, they would have to complete a level. Atemu took the first one, not allowing the two to join him for some reason.

TERMINATION SHOCK

Sabrepulse

The beginning of the level was boring enough; Atemu just kinda… stood there… between two exploding circles. But it caught him off-guard and hit him when projectiles suddenly sprayed out. Come the first checkpoint, hump-like wave things came out at him, and then the projectiles soon returned.

The second checkpoint was a bit… harder. A hump wave would appear, except it had spikes on the side it would move to. When these appeared, Atemu yelped and dashed out of the way. He got hit trying to dash past it, instead dashing into it, and now had to deal with the splayed projectiles once more.

The spike humps soon came from all directions, but they disappeared for the regular humps to take their place, in a staircase-like arrangement, before forming the other way. Atemu got hit a third time and his health bar disappeared. But suddenly, time rewinded to the last checkpoint.

‘’Huh… so that’s what happens when you lose all your health,’’ Atemu mused. Going through the four-directional spike humps, and then the slanted humps. The final part was the second part of the stage once again. Atemu claimed the triangle and returned to the world map, where Akefia and Mariku were waiting.

The triangle went to release the big sail piece of the ship. Akefia approached Atemu.

‘’Why did you go in there alone?’’ he questioned. Atemu shrugged.

‘’Paying back my debt, Thief King. Now c’mon, we’ve got two more pieces to unlock,’’ Atemu told him, and the three jumped into the second Gateway.

SEVCON

Big Giant Circles

‘’Who wants to vote that this level will have a lot of circles?’’ Mariku offered.

‘’Why do you say that, Tomb Keeper?’’ Akefia snorted.

‘’Maybe because the artist title is literally ‘Big Giant Circles’, Akefia,’’ Atemu rolled his eyes. Ironically, Mariku wasn’t wrong. The beginning of the level just had a bunch of slow-moving circles that went out in a spiral, while some encircled another circle in the center. Soon after, the circle in the middle just started to pull larger circles to it as well as send smaller circles out.

‘’This has got to be the chillest level ever,’’ Atemu said, slightly bored. The other two had to agree. The middle circle began to move around a bit before sending out a spiral barrage of circles, which created a ring of sorts around the trio. Inside, a spinning bar made of circles rotated around, before another spiral flurry went out as the bar disappeared.

Two rings made of circles rotated around the middle circle and flew around. Those disappeared after a bit and arm-like tentacles flowed out of the middle circle as smaller circle projectiles came at them. In the end, one more spiral rotation of small circles was the end, and then all the circles encompassing the middle circle disappeared, and then tha tone disappeared when they crossed the end line. Akefia claimed the triangle as they were engulfed in the light once more.

The triangle flew up, unlocking the main ship body, and leaving one last triangle to unlock the small sail. They dove right into the final Gateway, with a shout from Mariku.

CASCADE

Kubbi

The level was pretty cool as well: projectiles rained from above, and so did eclipsing snakes. Soon after, bigger square snakes came from below, representing the bass line.

First checkpoint crossed, and everything vanished, and the smaller snakes spiraled out from the center of the level, and not long after, projectiles from the side. Having dashed to the middle, all three got hit with a yelp when the snakes flurried out. With the song building up its beat, the snakes rained from above down onto them, getting bigger and faster, before spreading out from a bar that dropped from the sides or down the middle.

‘’So many spiraly snakes,’’ Mariku mused as they came from all directions and went out all ways. They each got hit by a different snake, leaving them each with a single piece, which quickly regenerated once Mariku claimed the final triangle. The triangle unlocked the final pieces, which opened up a new path, and the trio held a hand up, allowing the ship to form and come alive. The ship opened up, letting the trio in, with Mariku at the head, grinning like mad as he steered the ship.

‘’Please don’t kill us, Mariku, I would like to survive long enough to die properly again,’’ Atemu warned. Mariku laughed like mad as the ship jumped into the water, and ran into quite a few obstacles.

‘’You’re really bad at this,’’ Akefia muttered as he ran into a spikey like, three times in a row. Finally, they made it across, somehow undamaged by the hits. But rumbling caught their attention before they entered the newly discovered mountain. At the top, Fuhai was flying (well, soaring really, he didn’t have wings-) towards it, and landed there. It had a crown on its head with a piece of the Hikari Tree, which one it was was unable to be determined from their distance. But it took the other piece in its hand, and slammed it into the top, which was filled with water.

The corrupted piece polluted the way, turning it red as rain rained from above. The boat freaked at the sudden rain, and quickly deposited the trio on land, and they ran inside. They found their way blocked off, but just above was a Boss Gateway, and so they entered inside.

BARRACUDA

Noisestorm

The boss was a triangle, one much like a piece of the Hikari Tree, but it seemed much more corrupted. It had the ability to send out triangle-shaped snakes, and did so to try and get the three. Soon, it formed a second edge on all of its edges, which quickly became riffs in that direction to the beat.

Dodging the snakes and riffs was tricky to say the least, especially when the triangle rose from the ground, now part of a larger pyramid and square snakes rained from below towards them and the top. The monster used its new body to become a large pummeling riff, and its head shot out circles.

‘’Oww that was stupid,’’ Mariku groaned as he got punched by a riff. Akefia sniggered, but got hit by a circle when he wasn’t looking. The pyramid monster moved over to the other side soon after, then appeared on the walls themselves to riff the walls. The trio continued to dodge the riffs, circles that came out from the head, and snakes, before the sole triangle reappeared and imploded itself by expending too many snakes from its body, leaving only small corrupted triangles behind.

Crossing the end, a normal triangle appeared, and Atemu was there to grab it. It returned them to the world map, and opened up the pathway for them, allowing them to continue on into the dark cave.

‘’Does this remind anyone of the stupid cave adventure we did about two years back?’’ Akefia mused. Atemu grunted in confirmation.

‘’Yeah, why did we do that again?’’

‘’Because we were bored, hated our daily routines and social statuses keeping up separated, and heard that there might’ve been a way to see our hikaris inside,’’ Mariku replied.

‘’Yeah, and look where they are now: trapped inside pieces of the Hikari Tree, which are being controlled by that devil monster Fuhai,’’ Akefia snorted.

‘’But think about it guys, Fuhai rammed a piece into the top. Which means one of our hikaris is here,’’ Atemu reminded them. The two were silent after that, but not before humming in thought. They found another Level Gateway, and after a few moments, they jumped down inside.

DUBWOOFER SUBSTEP

Omnitica

Particles rained from above like raindrops into an invisible floor. The floor slowly raised to reveal an ocean, corrupted from the piece of the Hikari Tree rammed into the mountain, while the ceiling slowly lowered to reveal a spiky top. The stalactites rained from above, causing splashes to occur.

‘’Seems chill enough,’’ Atemu shrugged. Of course he spoke too soon as all their eyes widened at the words in the song before large beams rained down, but they were more like crushers since they caused huge waves in the water. The sudden incoming lasers got Atemu, while a wave managed to hit Mariku. Later, another laser barrage got Akefia, and the chill part came back, but then the crushers returned very quickly. A quick laser barrage was too fast for Akefia and Atemu, who got hit.

‘’Okay, I don’t like water anymore,’’ Mariku groaned, and then got smacked by a falling stalactite. Thankfully, the end of the level was in sight, and Atemu crossed before any more harm could come, and Akefia impatiently clenched the triangle. Returning to the world, the triangle illuminated the mushrooms in the mountain, allowing the trio to see their broken path ahead, forcing them to jump around.

‘’Looks like we got a bit of parkour,’’ Akefia noted, and the other two shrugged, having done a lot in their spare time of being bored/sneaking out to see their fellow former spirits. They jumped their way acrossing the rising platforms before arriving at a new level.

CHEAT CODES

Nitro Fun

‘’If only we had those in here, we could make our lives so much easier,’’ Atemu joked, which got a short laugh from Akefia and a giggle from Mariku. Their obstacle was a slightly glitchy square which fired squiggly projectiles at them from a side. Nothing too hard.

The level didn’t get much more exciting before smaller glitchy squares came at them, and then bigger ones appeared and locked them in, while one in the middle tried to murder them, succeeding in hitting Akefia once before they finished the level. Akefia grabbed the triangle again, which broke the ledge they were on, putting them on a platform, drifting on the underground lake.

Finally, they reached an end, and they were launched off by hitting said end, and the rocky raft broke, sinking to the depths.

‘’I’m surprised it didn’t do that earlier,’’ Akefia mused, and Atemu snorted as they traveled up to the Level Gateway above.

CLASH

Trip40

This song had a bit of a mystical feel to it, and the bells in the music were timed with the squares in the level appearing (well, more like the other way around). Suddenly, a large square and circle appeared, drifting around. Then barriers on the sides came in as the appearing squares died off.

The side barriers were revealed to be glitchy squares and the wave humps: the wave humps sent out circle projectiles, while the glitchy squares sent out square projectiles. Meanwhile, the drifting square and circle were eventually joined by another one of its kind. The barriers soon lifted as many wandering squares and circles appeared. Then the edges gained cannons as the barriers lifted.

And the cannons sent out ricocheting squares and circles as the trio tried to dodge, but Mariku and Atemu each got hit once before the triangle appeared, signalling the end of the level as the cannons departed. Mariku eagerly snagged the triangle, which teleported them back to the mountain cave. The triangle flew into the roof of the cave, allowing a large section of the cave to fall down into the water. The trio hopped onto it.

Unfortunately, a sudden rumble caused the small (good!) spiky guy to fall into the water as his ledge broke off, and he emerged, corrupted, and punched the ancient spirits’ cave piece up, making them scream for a good three seconds. The water began to rise below them as well.

‘’Ooookay! Let’s not get hit!’’ Atemu yelped as the corrupted spiky guy tried to hit them from below and spikes from above. A spike scored on Akefia, rewinding them back a bit. Mariku got slammed by the spiky dude, and another rewind occured. Finally, the trio were at the top of the mountain, where the first piece of the Hikari Tree awaited them.

Suddenly, their movement path was cut off by nowhere to go, and the spiky guy started pulling on their path back towards him, but they managed to jump up to the path ahead.

‘’Bye sucker!’’ Akefia laughed, while Atemu rolled his eyes and kept going up. There, the Level Gateway awaited them. But they got a glimpse of the hikari inside this piece: Ryou Bakura, Akefia’s former vessel and hikari.

‘’Guys… let me do this on my own,’’ Akefia asked, making their eyes go wide. ‘’I want to prove I can still be the darker half Ryou needs in his life, without any help,’’ he explained. Atemu and Mariku looked at each other and then back at Akefia and nodded.

‘’Good luck, Akefia,’’ Atemu said, and Akefia nodded, entering the Gateway. But in the middle of entering inside, the spiky guy appeared! Akefia delved into inside, and the spiky guy followed, turning the Level Gateway into a Boss Gateway.

LYCANTHROPY

Cardi

Inside, only Akefia existed. True to their word and the Thief King’s wishes, Atemu and Mariku had stayed outside, and that made him smile a little.

The level was similar to what they had just done: borders on the edges were spikes, and the spiky guy (which Akefia named Supaiku) emerged from below, bringing its ocean - and deadly waves - with it. It began moving around, flailing slightly as projectiles emerged from it. Akefia dashed around to dodge it.

Supaiku became multiple spike balls, while the raining spikes from Dubwoofer Substep returned. The spike balls plunged into the ocean below, and Supaiku reemerged, whole, and slightly demonic-looking. It used its spiky powers to merge spike balls with the waves, hitting Akefia. The spike balls usually exploded, sending out bullets once more, but then Supaiku disappeared into the ocean as the level ended. Akefia grabbed the triangle, and returned to the world map, where Atemu and Mariku waited.

The triangle in Akefia’s hands flew up into the corrupted piece, hovering above the mountain’s water supply, and turned the piece white. Spinning furiously, the triangle dissolved and revealed Ryou inside, before he flared out and touched the mountain water, bringing purity to the land around them. He uncorrupted Supaiku, and accidentally sent the yamis flying down into the boat, and they watched as the ocean uncorrupted, but also watched as Kyaria drifted into a sewage pipe. After Ryou landed on their boat, unconscious and exhausted from the sudden power outburst, the boat and its crew gave chase to Kyaria.

Up on the tower that the corrupted Hikari tree had formed from the strange blocks, Fuhai was slamming its guitar chords, and every time it did brought lightning down from the stormy sky.

Inside the pipe system, the boat sailed along as Ryou stirred. When he saw Akefia holding him, looking at him worriedly, he immediately hugged him. Akefia quickly hugged back as Ryou sobbed into his shoulder. In a few minutes, the smaller albino calmed down.

‘’Okay- what is going on?’’ Ryou asked. Atemu caught him up to date on the situation at hand: arriving in this world, discovering him and the other hikaris, Fuhai coming along and capturing them and corrupting their containers, and Akefia filled in his story of defeating Supaiku and rescuing Ryou.

‘’That’s… one heck of a story… but if I had to guess, I’d bet that that Fuhai monster has Yugi. Yugi was really the one who kinda held us together after your departure,’’ Ryou told them. Mariku and Akefia hummed in thought while Atemu was silent, watching as the boat took them across the jumpy waters.

They made landfall finally, and the four departed from the ship. They jumped onto the cog and launched themselves up onto the pathway to continue on, and tried not to get smushed as crushers slammed down on the ground.

‘’Akefia, I want you to stay out here this time to make sure Ryou will be okay,’’ Atemu told the albinos and Akefia nodded. Atemu and Mariku hopped into the Level Gateway.

COOL FRIENDS

Silva Hound (Murtagh & Veschell Remix)

‘’Think we’ll get anything exciting?’’ Mariku mused as they dashed past the projectiles and extendable arms, trying to avoid the saws behind them on the conveyor belt, which Mariku ran into.

‘’No,’’ Atemu admitted as they dodged beams and snakes. But then a rotating disk appeared, albeit quite slow. A large disk fell to the ground, shooting out particles as its dust trails, The duo had to avoid cages of saws trying to murder them. Atemu took the triangle into his careful hands and teleported back into the sewer system.

‘’Forgot to mention to me about the bright light when returning?’’ Ryou groaned. Atemu chuckled nervously and apologized. The triangle flew out of his hands, and the conveyor belt below staggered before finally reversing and sending the spiky dudes the other way, down a different pipe. Kyaria appeared, going the new way, and Mariku called out for it.

‘’Obsession much?’’ Atemu muttered, and Akefia snickered before they hopped onto the belt. However, the gap between the two belts was their downfall, and they fell down to a trapdoor, which opened and dropped them down to below.

Down in the depths of the system, the group continued to press on. Three Level Gateways were seen, and above, a small helicopter was slumbering in air, trapped by two water pipes.

‘’Three Gateways. Ryou, you okay with being out here?’’ Atemu asked. The shorter albino nodded, and the trio headed into the first Gateway.

THE LUNAR WHALE

Danimal Cannon

The main enemy this time was a 3x3 square in the middle which could expand out and possibly punch you. Wasn’t exactly friendly, although who assumed that. Atemu got slapped, though, by an arm. With projectiles coming in from all directions, plus exploding disks, Mariku got smacked.

The next stage were little tripwire-like bars, that went one way and tried to murder you. Got Akefia and Atemu, and then a barrier was set up, leaving less room to dash around. Soon, the end of the level was reached, and Mariku dashed to grab the triangle before the other two, and return to the world map.

‘’I guess we gotta turn off those pipes and wake up that heliboi,’’ Mariku murmured as the triangle flew up into a slot above the helicopter. The other three looked at each other and shrugged, moving on to the next level, entering inside.

SPECTRA

Chipzel

‘’Oh, this sounds cool,’’ Mariku mused as triangles expanded to create hex tiles. The trio had to dash from tile to tile to avoid being shot off-screen as the camera moved. But then they had to avoid the tiles that would become fully encompassed briefly as well.

‘’Yeah, it’s also deadly,’’ Akefia muttered. The tile they were in expanded out, and then added a bar made of hexagons that turned one way before switching directions. Akefia claimed the next triangle, and returning to Ryou and the map, the triangle flew up into the next slot, turning the water drainage off quite a bit. The trio quickly moved into the third and final Level Gateway for the last triangle needed.

UNLOCKED

Piesco

‘’I hope we get something boppy,’’ Atemu said, and the other two had to agree. Zigzag snakes emerged from below, above, and the sides, determined on killing them. Larger, slower ones appeared as well, getting a strike on Mariku before the smaller, faster snakes reappeared, along with small projectiles. The trio stood still briefly being forced to dash past barriers, one of which struck Akefia, before the sudden snakes from above almost hit Atemu. This reoccurred quite a few times.

‘’I think my wish got answered,’’ Atemu mused and he went to grab the triangle. The triangle flew to the final slot and allowed the helicopter to land safely on its helipad. Making their way through the cogs via jumping, one of the cogs went into overdrive and threw them way past the helicopter, who flew after them.

With a small grunt, the yamis were thrown down a trapdoor, with Ryou and the helicopter stuck above. The yamis yelped as the conveyor belt they were situated on began moving them back towards the large saws! They tried to escape, but Atemu got sawed, and so time rewinded. They moved quicker this time over the obstacles, and managed to snag the path the helicopter let down for them. Akefia and Mariku quickly dropped down onto the real ground, while the helicopter cuddled Atemu briefly, who sweatdropped.

The other three grabbed on, Ryou and Atemu being carried while Akefia and Mariku rode on the helicopter’s back as he flew them through the sewer system, past the crushers and spinning bars. They saw that a crusher smacked the spiky guys before dragging them down below, and they followed.

They managed to land on the helipad right by a piece of the Hikari Tree, which was being squeezed to corrupt spiky guys. The hikari inside was close enough to be visible: former Tomb Keeper and hikari to Mariku, Malik.

‘’Well, that confirms that Fuhai has Yugi…’’ Ryou murmured sadly. Atemu grunted, and they all watched as their friend Kyaria was picked up by the claw. The helicopter - now named Kaiten - tried to stop the claw, but was thrown away. Kyaria was splashed with a dose of the Hikari Tree’s essence, and it caused a weird mutation to occur.

Kyaria looked angry, but still had the tear in its eye. Mariku turned to the duo. ‘’It’s my turn, ‘kay?’’ he told them, and they nodded, watching as Mariku jumped in.

CLOSE TO ME

Sabrepulse

Inside, Kyaria was glitching between good and corrupted; every time it glitched, two tear-like particles rained out. Its glitching became faster and faster as rotating beams appeared out of it, one of which accidentally hit Mariku. The beams started rotating, and Mariku took notice of the three different faces Kyaria had. Red disks started floating up out of the ground.

Finally, Kyaria picked a face, the one Mariku had seen on the outside, and gained two robot arms. It pulled the ground up, shoving the trio into the top of the level, before sending out the beams again. Its face shifted to cogs for eyes, and upon running into the side, turned into a giant cog, which Mariku dashed through. Kyaria’s third form was one eye as a saw, and its body became sharp, and it sent out four saws, which grinded against the edges.

It turned back into its robotic form, one of the beams had hit Mariku, but he was only a third down by this point. Kyaria fell to the ground, exhausted and uncorrupt, trying to flee the razor saws coming for it as lasers rained from the sky. But two lasers hit Kyaria and corrupted it back into its glitching form once again.

It shifted into its cog form, before turning into a robot once more, which hit Mariku, knocking a fifth of his health off. When it reverted again to its cog form, Mariku ran into the bolt in the middle, losing another fifth. He got hit again, left with only a small piece as Kyaria’s arms went crazy before finally shooting four claws out and bringing the borders in. Kyaria shifted into saw mode, which lined the smaller borders with saws. The level started rotating around while Kyaria sent out projectiles. The level stopped, then began rotating the other way.

Everything went back to the original attacks. First, Kyaria went into saw form, then shifted into robotic form, then saw form once more, and for the finisher, cog form. Kyaria started glitching a lot again, sending out the tear-like particles before it finally returned to normal as Mariku crossed the finish line. Holding the triangle that he had grabbed, he returned to the world map and the others.

With Atemu, Akefia, Mariku, and Ryou watched, the triangle floated up into the second piece of the Hikari Tree. In the brief light flash, the squeezers that had been used on the piece were destroyed, and the larger triangle melted away after spinning rapidly for a brief moment. Malik appeared from inside and slowly unfurled from his fetal position. Falling down, he hovered right over Kyaria, who was saved from corruption, now dancing happily. Mariku came to hug Malik, who wasn’t unconscious and hugged back. Kaiten and the other yamis celebrated as well, and Ryou and Malik spied two smaller triangles on the ground, and made a thread to wrap around their necks, the triangles on the necklace.

Unfortunately, their celebration was cut short when they noticed four corrupted spiky guys going up a pipe to the top of the tower, where Fuhai and the sealed Yugi were. Kaiten carried the group up to the lock mechanism, where the boat, nicknamed Yoki, was waiting. There were three Level Gateways, and the yamis nodded.

‘’Malik, are you going to be okay?’’ Atemu asked. The smaller sandy blond nodded, and the ancient trio entered the first Gateway to unlock the locks.

INTO THE ZONE

Shirobon

The level had riffs on the sides, and to the notes of the music, humps rose from the bottom and top while snakes went across. Eventually, the riffs came from both sides, and the humps moved across both ways, threatening to hit them. When the next stage came on, it had a synthwave look on the sides while exploding disks and snakes came at them.

‘’Ow,’’ Akefia muttered after getting hit by a bullet. The moving humps returned as well, and Atemu ran right into one. Eventually, the synthwave look shifted to the ceiling, and the humps moved one way across the screen. The humps then started moving the other way, then both ways. The level was soon over and Akefia claimed the first triangle.

The triangle broke the first barrier, allowing Yoki to sail across the water and throw down the lever, opening the first lock. The trio approached the next Gateway and entered inside.

VINDICATE ME

Big Giant Circles

‘’Circles anyone?’’ Mariku offered, which got a laugh out of Atemu. The level didn’t have circles, and instead featured the extendable arms of doom, on the bottom. A small plank (or hotdog, if you’re Mariku) rolled across the extendable arms, and got thrown up into the newly formed roof by said arms. More appeared in the level, before the trio had to traverse rotating extendable arms, and then more hotdogs as Akefia was split from Atemu and Mariku briefly. Then the extendable arms formed a death circle, which did hit Atemu. The level continued to various hotdogs and extendable arms, and Atemu got hit twice more, rewinding them back to the checkpoint.

‘’Dang it,’’ Atemu muttered. They went through the part again, trying not to die as they got hit, but they finally made it across, and Atemu claimed the triangle. The triangle flew up and broke the second barrier, and Kaiten flew up and used Malik to pull the switch down, much to his chagrin, unlocking the second lock. The trio made their way inside the final Gateway after Malik grumped for a bit.

TRY THIS

Pegboard Nerds

The borders closed in around them, and immediately Atemu got one of those old spy movie vibes.

‘’Anyone getting spy movie vibes?’’ Atemu asked.

‘’Yep,’’ both Akefia and Mariku replied. The level was indeed centered around a spy movie as they moved past exploding circles, beams, and cogs, before reaching the main room, where a case with a jewel inside sunk to the ground, before they continued to avoid exploding circles and ninja-star like projectiles, plus a few more lasers, which did hit Mariku. Finally, Mariku grabbed the triangle and returned them to the world map.

The triangle flew up and opened the third barrier. Kyaria jumped a lot to get a loose piece of metal to fall and flip the switch, which did happen. The third lock was finally broken, allowing access to Fuhai. A new pathway was made to the Boss Gateway.

‘’Guys…’’ Atemu asked the yamis, unable to finish his request. They blinked, surprised, and then grinned (Mariku) or smirked (Akefia) and nodded. Atemu jumped down the Gateway, but just before he did, he was stopped by the other seven.

Kyaria coddled Atemu briefly, who chuckled and sweatdropped a bit. Afterwards, Yoki splashed the yamis, which made Atemu laugh as Akefia grumbled. Finally, Kaiten hugged Atemu as well, Ryou and Malik doing the same, while Akefia and Mariku gave him a high-five.

‘’Atemu… please… rescue Yugi,’’ Ryou asked. The former pharaoh nodded, and dashed off the Gateway, jumping in for good this time as everyone looked on.

FINAL BOSS

Nitro Fun

The corrupted spikey guys made up the sides, occasionally sending out projectiles or beams. Then there were disks as Atemu dashed to the top. Beams threatened his health, and the wisps below. Atemu had to dash in a slanted line to avoid getting hit. Finally, he reached the top.

The third Hikari Tree piece - his hikari, Yugi, former bearer of the Millennium Puzzle and the current King of Games - was there, in a crown, which was on Fuhai’s head. The spikey guys took the crown away for Atemu and Fuhai’s final battle.

Fuhai had a number of tricks up his sleeves: becoming multiple cannons, beams out in all directions, and projectiles every time he moved. He tried to blast Atemu as they continued walking up the tower, managing to hit Atemu a few times, but no rewind. Finally. Atemu completed the level as Fuhai suddenly left and Atemu held the triangle in his hands carefully as the world engulfed him in a bright light.

Back on the top of the tower, Atemu made his way to just below Fuhai’s crown. The Hikari Tree piece flew up, and the crown turned from red to blue, hovering right above his head. The piece of the Tree melted away, revealing Yugi inside, who started to unfurl from his ball-like position.

But Atemu’s joy ended too soon.

Fuhai returned, and grabbed Yugi, who was not yet awake fully, blew Atemu away, and squeezed Yugi as hard as it possibly could, shattering the boy into many particles as the hikari screamed. In a bright red light, a new figure stood in Fuhai’s place.

Black leggings, a torn black top that showed off his lower abdomen, and the back of the shirt extended down like a trenchcoat would. His hands were like claws, claws fit for a demon, and around his neck was a tight black choker. His tri-colored hair was unnaturally ruly, and when his eyes opened, it wasn’t his kind amethyst eyes. No, they were a burning blood red, and the sclera was not white, but black. He grinned sadistically, showing his small fangs.

Atemu watched in horror as he saw his corrupted hikari look down at him. ‘’Well, well, well, finally, a human body,’’ Yugi/Fuhai scoffed. ‘’You puny mortals. So frail and weak. I was hoping to defeat you once and for all, because if the spirits who cheated death fell, then so would the worlds’ hope.’’

‘’Wh-what…?’’ Atemu choked out. Fuhai grinned.

‘’You three are the last things standing between me and complete world domination. I had to defeat you and gain your power. So stand here, oh so great Pharaoh, and face me!’’ he challenged. Atemu growled, and made his way to the Boss Gateway.

ANNIHILATE (ORIGINAL MIX)

Destroid

’I will save you, Yugi,’ Atemu thought as he entered the level, dodging spiker disks as they came at him from all sides, Yugi standing over the level, looking down on the former pharaoh. From the spiky barriers, hatched out spiker disks forming snakes. They came from all sides, one hitting Atemu. A message appeared as Yugi was engulfed in another bright red light, saying ‘YOU HAVE BEEN DESTROYED’. Yugi broke out from the light, with black horns, his black claws sharper and going farther up his arm, and two large black wings. His sudden beam out striked on Atemu, who growled.

‘’Rude,’’ the former spirit muttered as Yugi sent out disks with every wing flap, and beams here and there, then rotating arms of disks as well briefly. Yugi hit Atemu once more, leaving Atemu with half health as he dodged the disk snakes again. Yugi smirked, taunting Atemu with his eyes as Atemu was boxed in by the spikey disks, the only place to go was right under Yugi - who immediately smashed the Pharaoh into the ground.

Atemu rolled onto the ground, weak and all his health gone. Everyone watched with wide, scared eyes as the ‘IT’S OVER’ message appeared over the level, but before anything more could happen, the message began to become static. Suddenly, Atemu was standing, his health bar back to full and shining white as the message became ‘IT’S NOT OVER’. But it was in vain as Yugi fired a sudden beam of dark energy at Atemu, and the Egyptian was flung back, and fell down the tower once more, broken and unconscious. Yugi chuckled darkly and went to look over his kingdom.

Everyone crowded around Atemu’s lifeless body, looking sadly at the man who tried to save everyone. Kaiten tried high-fiving Atemu back to life, Yoki tried splashing, and Kyaria and the other four were at a loss of what to do. While Akefia and Mariku hung back, Ryou and Malik went over to look at the damaged body, murdered from the physical and emotional pains given to him by his corrupted hikari.

As the group silently cried over the ex-pharaoh, Ryou and Malik’s triangles attached to their necklaces suddenly blinged. They perked up a bit, and held their triangles in their hands, then looked at each other, and nodded. Standing on two sides of Atemu, they held their hands out and down at the Pharaoh, calling on their light energy as hikaris. Slowly, the Pharaoh started to rise as the bright white energy started to engulf him, with everyone looking on in wonder. Then a bright flash had them reeling back suddenly as Atemu shot up to the roof in a spire of light.

TILL IT’S OVER

Tristam
Kneeling on the roof, Atemu slowly rose to his feet as Yugi wheeled around, growling. ‘’I made a mistake five years ago, leaving my hikari’s side,’’ he said as the light died down to reveal him in a two-layered robe with white leggings and loose sleeves that went to a little above his elbows, plus white separate tight sleeves/gloves that stopped right above his hand, pointed at the tip. ‘’But I promise, my aibou…’’ a golden crown, similar to the one Fuhai had, but with the fifth middle spire, floated above Atemu’s five-spiked hair, and in his right hand, a lime-blue-yellow sword was held in a criss-crossing pattern for the blade, and the hilt was black with the kanji for light on one side, and darkness on the other. On his left middle finger, a golden ring with diamonds encrusted into it, a promise ring.

‘’I promise I will never give up until you are back!’’ Atemu vowed, clenching his left fist as his eyes flew open, revealing a bright amethyst similar to Yugi’s original color. Four wings, detached from Atemu’s actual body and two larger than the others, appeared. ‘’I won’t quit until it’s over, Fuhai!’’

Yugi/Fuhai growled as the arena was set up once more, this time outside of the level. Above them both, the ‘IT’S NOT OVER’ message appeared and Atemu readied his sword.

And the true final battle began. Atemu went for Yugi as Yugi tried to blast him back. But Atemu’s strikes were proving to be too difficult for Yugi to defend against, and Yugi’s strikes were too weak to even deal any damage to Atemu, no matter how he tried to attack. Yugi tried throwing him into the ground, but Atemu would just slash him back every time he tried to grab him. With one final sword strike, right into Yugi’s chest, the demon screamed as he exploded into a bright light, engulfing Atemu, the tower, and everyone in it.

Yugi’s mouth hung open as he floated in mid air, and his eyes rolled to the back of his head, his sclera returning to white as the pure piece of the Hikari Tree floated out of his chest. Yugi’s body crumbled into ashes as Atemu watched with sad eyes, but the other two hikaris (somehow on the top of the tower, and no one will ever know how!) rejoined Yugi’s encagement. They became the other two pieces of the Hikari Tree, and the three pieces spun rapidly around each other. The three merged together to reveal the sun, and the three yamis were somehow back at the base of the tower. They watched as the three pieces joined together in an arrow-like shape, and dashed right through the tower, destroying it and all other pieces Fuhai made.

The smaller triangles rained from the sky and brought life to the land again. The sun and yamis, plus Kyaria, Kaiten, Yoki, and the three birds Atemu saw briefly when he first arrived here, watched as the Hikari Tree was reborn. A bright light shone out from each of the triangle pieces, and there the hikaris stood, including Yugi, who was back to his normal self. Ryou and Malik went over and hugged their darker halves, while Atemu just stared at Yugi with a smile on his lips and tears in his eyes. Yugi smiled back and the two immediately ran for each other, wrapping their arms around one another as Atemu’s lighter form disappeared into his modern clothes.

‘’Thank you,’’ Yugi whispered as he cried into Atemu’s shoulder. Atemu nodded, and his tears of joy fell on Yugi’s head. After a few moments, they all looked up to the sky, where a message made of white and blue letters was shining.
