Most people like to assume that a server's worth is determined by how many people play on it, how many votes it has or how popular and well known it is. I'm here to tell you that's not true.
For the gamers like me, who enjoy a small setting with close knit friends, a small server is where you belong. I find that I can only play and enjoy so much on larger servers, due to the lag, overpopulation and general spam in the chat. Who can tell me they honestly enjoy that? Of course, the argument is always, "I can meet more people on popular servers.", but I beg to differ.
If you want to actually meet, get to know, and cultivate a friendship with your fellow players, a smaller server, with fewer people is where you should be playing. A server with about 10-30 players is my personal ideal server. Small enough to get to know the people playing, and big enough that there is always someone online to chat with while you explore and thrive.
Not to mention, the smaller servers make an absolute effort to get to know their members. They become quite close quickly, and genuinely care about their fellow gamers, while on larger servers you're just one in a thousand or more, and all that they really seem to care about is getting you to vote, and help popularize their server further.
Just my humble opinion, but I think small servers deserve more recognition.

Big servers:

Player1: Welcome

Player 2:Hey player1 lets raid someone
Player33345:Hey guys anyone has a diamond for sale?:
Small servers:
Welcome playerblablabla to the server!
Player1: Welcome
Player2:Welcome!
Player35213: Welcome!
Player52:Hey playerblablabla team?
playerblablabla: Sure
And the new player starts enjoying the small server but just gets bored of the large server.
I agree though! I was an owner on a server that had 10-30 players and I loved it a lot! It was a great experience for me and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It was cool experience for me, but just like more small servers, we lost funds and had to close down.
