Doogun and Hoogun - Their last hunt.

Thick was the snow and blizzard intense, the mountain rumbled with unease as the wind battered its slopes and shook the trees. This however was normal to the dwarf ranger twins, who trudged through the snow with surprising haste. The Taller of the two, by dwarven stature, was Doogun with his blond beard wide and groomed with the end gripped in a clasp so it would not tangle; His chainmail tunic overhooded by his bright green cloak. His heavy gloved hands gripping his bronze wide axe as he softy trod onward. The shorter brother was Hoogun, his beard by contrast was still blond but darker by three shades and ruffled into curls giving him a jollier appearance. His hooded cloak was a burgandy red, with a matching cloth vest covering his chainmail. On his back was saddled his own bronze broad axe, but in his hands he wielded a pair of curved throwing axes ready and prepared.

The duo of stout rangers shambled through the blizzard and snow with ease, helped by their quality snowboots and natural resistance to the cold. Envious the gale blasted them with face freezing snow but to no avail for these dwarfs were on a mission, a dangerous one, one which the storm had a minor role. With Doogun leading, the rangers made their way up to the edge of a snow-blighted cliff. As Doogun stopped, Hoogun keeped walking, in a trice Doogun stopped him with the length of his axe and grunted his disapproval. "Hehe hooo..." Hoogun chuckled embarrassed as he stared down the cliff drop that had suddenly appeard in the fog of snow. "Clearly we're on track" Doogun spoke drawing Hoogun's gaze to the half eaten remains of a snow goat hanging grimly from a cliff side branch. "Looks awful fresh" Hoogun confirmed his face wincing.
"YOOOoooOOoowwwoolll" came a piercing yowl echoing from the land below, the howling wind retreating out of fear. The twins looked at each other and with a nod accepted the challenge and began their scale of desent.

With the end of the hour the rangers had made their way down the cliff face and crept through a sparse fir copse reaching a clearing. Now that they were below the storm, their view was clear and hearing unhindered.

The clearing was yet another cliff with a wide berth from the trees to the edge, yet there it was....white furred and hulking. The Troll. With its back to them, as it used a rock to break the bones of the aforementioned goat's other half, it looked baboon like with long ape like limbs and a long furred tail. Its front and lower half of its body bared no fur exposing its grey and seriously hard hide, its face furless and flat, a heavy brow with black sclera and fire-orange irises, its strong jaw with upward baring teeth and a thorned chin were smeared with the blood of its quarry. With their target hemmed in the rangers creeped forward as quitely as the snow would let them. Doogun motioned with a finger for Hoogun to attack from the left, Hoogun responded with a nod. The troll paused from his bone cracking and sniffed at the air, its large nose betraying the rangers presence. The monster turned its head and shoulder with a roar, but only in time for Hoogun's first thrown axe to impact into the side of its bull neck with a hefty "Thwack" creating the first wound. The troll howled but only enraged, charging the dwarfs, loping on all fours. Hoogun hurled his second axe hitting the beast in the chest forcing it to tumble forward onto the ground with a wheeze of pain. Doogun charged, throwing himself into the air to bring down his mighty axe, but the troll lunged back up striking Doogun with a sweeping arm knocking him back. Now Hoogun charged unshealthing his broad axe and striking his own repetitions of cleaving blows on the creature's right arm and side. The troll moaned with each blow and lashed out at Hoogun making him unsteady...."Haha you clumsy Troggbeast, ya hit like a drunken wench!" Hoogun laughed mockingly. Yet the troll took advantage of his bragging and swung a high kick with its great foot slamming Hoogun into the air with him falling to the ground winded and stunned. The monster bared down over him growling with contempt. "Hoogun you oaf!" Doogun cried and launched forward bringing his axe down on the back of its left knee hamstringing it, the troll yowled in pain and turned with a wobble. Doogun spat provocatively into the bloodied snow. Despite its limp the troll lunged raising a heavy arm to bare, Doogun raised his axe to parry, but only to fail, as the beast brought down its arm for a crushing blow, snapping his axe in two and making him stagger. Roaring with victory it brought a second strike upwards, impacting under Dooguns ribs piercing him with its claws. Doogun coughed, frothing blood on his beard, as the troll raised him high leering at him with a fanged smile. "WENDIGO!" Hoogun hollered from behind, rallied with vengance in his heart he cleaved at the monsters right knee. It screamed throwing Doogun aside before falling to its knees. "No..Never...No" Hoogun hollered louder as he cleaved again and again carving the creatures back with his axe. He stopped, breathing heavily; the trolls body weeped with wounds deep, wheezing in agony it tilted its head to Hoogun its face showing anguish and disbelief. Hoogun with eyes of anger stood over it, heated fog coming from his mouth. "Never again will you harm those of this mountain, never again harm my BROTHER!" he swung his axe high and brought it down apon the crippled creatures head with a sickening "Kuuurrrackk". The troll finally went limp and slowly sank into the snow.

His rage sated, Hoogun walked slowley to his twin who lay face up in the snow his beautiful blond beard caked in blood. He dropped to his knees beside him taking his hand, "Brother" Doogun coughed "We did good" he said weakly....

"Aye, we did ..Hehe..." said Hoogun with a sob.

...."However you go it alone....know that I'll be watching...over you (he wheezed) from the ancester's...(clears throat)...ancester's beer hall telling our tales to our fathers." Doogun wheezed again. He then reached with a bloodied hand passing Hoogun his fang necklace memento from their first hunt, he smiled weakly closing his eyes with one last sighing breath.
"Thank you brother, thank you" Hoogun said softly as he fought back his tears then lowering his head sighed with a heavy heart, then started to tidy his brother.

The night set in and fresh snow began to fall, growing heavier by the minute. But out in the dark atop the cliffs edge, a light started to burn becoming a fire as wood and cloth burned acknowledging a successful ceremonial passing.
