I used to co-own LumarCraft, one of the most popular tekkit raiding servers (until it shut down, that is), and I'd like to share some tips to you new server owners on how to select plugins!
Note: Alright this one is going to be a little bit different than the others. This Tips for Server Owners will be about plugins. I will be recommending how to go about finding plugins to suit your needs! This one isn't nearly as important as the other blogs; it's more about how to try to reduce as much lag as you can while still getting the benefits from having the plugins you need.
Tip one - Finding Three:
I use a process I'm going to refer to as "Finding Three". Finding Three is the process of finding three plugins, which do what you need, and finding the one that has the most active developer, most user support, easiest and most efficient configuration file, and with the least amount of required resources. I highly recommend only getting plugins off of DevBukkit, as that's where you'll be able to find more than one option for what you need done.
Tip two - Plugin lag test:
Alrighty. So you've selected the three plugins that do roughly the same thing. What I recommend you do now, is install them one by one, invite your friends onto the server, and have everyone use that plugin as much as they can. This will help you track how much RAM/CPU that plugin is taking up on usage. This way, you can minimize the amount of resources used, while still getting the plugins you need.
Tip three - Configuration files & Permissions:
So, now you've selected the exact plugin you're using! Time to install it on your server, and get the config and permissions set up for that plugin. Not many tips for this one, besides making sure your config is set up properly, and same with permissions. You can test this by assigning people to different groups and having them use the commands. This will test to see if your inheritance is set up, as well as individual group ranks.
Tip four - Updating:
I cannot stress this one enough. Make sure the plugin build you're using is compatible with the version of Minecraft the server is running! Otherwise things will break, which will lower the happiness level of your playerbase, which is not good. I usually try to upgrade plugins as soon as the updates come out for them, as long as their compatible with the version of Minecraft on the server. This way, you will reduce bugs, and add more features to your server!
Tip five - Amount of plugins:
Too many servers have too many plugins they don't need! Make sure you only use the plugins you need, in addition to two or three "fun" plugins. This way, you'll be able to fit more players on with less lag. And who doesn't want more players?
A small disclaimer:
In no way shape or form am I saying these are the only ways to get optimal plugins.. I am saying what has worked for me in the past, and will help new server owners start to get proper plugins. If you have suggestions of your own, please comment them below to help other owners out!
Well thanks for reading guys, if this gets good reviews I will write more blogs about this subject. Thanks for stopping by! If you liked the post, please leave a diamond and a favorite! Leave me some feedback in the comments! Remember to check out my other Tips for Server Owners blogs as well!
