To be Alone By: Kawaii_Chopper For: "A Life of Steve" contest.
Everything around me seemed to call out my name. I felt like I was going insane. I knew my mind was growing weaker and weaker every night when I fell into deep sleep and every time I closed my eyes and dreamed, I would be alone in the dark. I would feel like I was being watched and everything around me wanted to break me. I was alone and I was afraid. Every single night, when I sit in the dark, I have to whisper to myself, "It's only a dream, nothing more, nothing less," That sentence I repeated over and over seemed to be the only that helped me stay sane.
The moon mocked me. The gray square in the sky just sat there, never moving, making the night go by slow. The darkness that surrounded me was cold, the air bit at my skin. I sat alone on the rough, frozen grass while an icy wind blew. I forced myself not to sleep, causing my eyes to hurt and my body to ache from exaustion. My limbs pleaded to rest, but my mind refused. I wanted to cry, but I have already sheded all of my tears. They were all gone when I saw her eyes close and her heart stop. She was the one that made me happy. She was the one who sat by me each night, watching over me. She drove my nightmares away and replaced them with warm dreams of wonders and adventures together.
"Alex," I called out. My voice cracked as I whispered that name. The name of my love and savior. An image flashed into my mind of Alex's beautiful smile. Her eyes would shine bright as the sparkling sea when she smiled. Its that same happy face that would always say to me, "Oh Steve! I'm fine!" The biggest lie I have ever heard.
I noticed very quickly Alex was growing weaker and weaker everyday. When we went out to cut wood, she could't keep up with me. She would keep collapsing like a baby bird, learning to fly.
"Alex! Are you OK? Are you feeling well!?" I would shout at her.
"I told you Steve, I'm fit as a horse," Another one of her lies. Her eyes would show pain. Her thin arms would tremble when she pushed herslef back up. She knew it as well I did - she... was dieing.
One day, her heart began to slow. I sat by her side, while she laid in her bed. The red sheets laid neatly over her as she weakly turned her head towards me, and smiled that gorgeous smile.
"You'll never guess, h-how much, I love you," her voice was small and weak. It sounded so very fragile, like any moment it will break like glass. I opened my mouth to speak, but I only mangaed to make a sad croak.
"Those doves Steve, I love you as much as those doves flap their wings," She looked straight into my eyes. Her hand started to reach up towards my face. Her skin was white like the new fallen snow in winter. Her soft smooth hand laid on my cheek and started to wipe a wet substance off my face. The tips of her fingers were wet from my tears. I was crying and I could not stop.
"Steve, don't cry, one day you will see me again,"
"No stop please! Don't leave me! I don't want to be alone!" I shouted as more tears flooded down my face.
"And when that day comes, we will love each other again, for every story, there is always a happy ending!" Her heart beat stopped. Her eye lids slowly fell down - hiding her lovely green eyes.
"No, no, stop, please!" I shouted in pain. My heart shattered, breaking into a million shards. My lungs desperatly tried to grasp onto oxygen. My mind refused to accept her being gone.
"I DON"T WANT TO BE ALONE!" I was screaming and squeezing the sheets of the small bed. I closed my eyes tight shut as I felt my fist collide with the oak floorboards. A puddle of tears started to form as I tried to hide myself from the world.
"I don't want to be alone," I whispered to myself while sobbing.
I felt my self snap back to reality. The sun was finally rising over the tall spruce trees. I weakly got up and started off towards a single hill that laid directly in front of me. On top of that hill laid a single poppy. I fell to my knees when I stood two blocks away from the crimson red flower. I reached my hand into a brown bag that was slung over my shoulder. I pulled out a gold nugget and carefully placed the small object into the palms of both of my hands. I stared at the shiny object for a second till I finally stuck my hands at the poppy.
"Alex, will you marry me?" A slight breeze rushed through my hair and tugged at the poppy. For once in a very long time, I smiled.
"I love you too," I'm not alone. Alex is still here, by my side. She will not allow me to have anymore nightmares. Alex and I will have a happy ending to our tragic story.
