I've been around a long time on Minecraft, and there are many amazing servers to be on. This list gives some fame (or shame, really) to the really terrible ones.

Number 5: Cowboycraft (STONIAISAWESOME)

A terrible server with a lack of plugins, with nearly no players and a horrible owner, this was a server I entered looking for a staff spot, but the owner is such a n00b, he doesn't even know how to do /op.

Number 4: Chillax tech/Sn (ChillaxOwner)

This server was first tekkit, then a SN server for a few month, then had a WHOLE YEAR of downtime, and then... opened again. And when everyone earned back their diamonds... they turned it into a creative server.

Number 3: Sexycraft

Many players donated for the rank and worked very hard for it, and then... sexycraft turned to a full-blown dating server, and those who wanted to get donator rank again... had to pay nearly 40 dollars. Not so sexy, eh?

Number 2: Caelumcraft

This server had a horrible owner, terrible staff, VERY bad plugins, etc. Now it's a lava-covered wastepit with long-gone players.

Number 1: Sir Ava and Skull's build-a-lot server

This server was incredibly insecure, as the owners gave literally everyone creative mode to try to hire a builder for spawn. Nevertheless, it was covered in lava, bedrock and TNT explosions by the 2nd day.

I hope you never go on a server as bad as these. I wouldn't recommend them to my worst enemy.
