Hello!

In this guide, I'll tell you how to get a build-related rank on freebuild servers!

Note: This is based on my experience on MineActivity, where if you fill 3 plots with good builds, you get the Builder rank. This may not work on all servers. It depends on how advanced the builds are.

Now that that's out of the way, let's get started:

Step 1: Fill ALL of the plot(s).

Don't expect to get the rank you're going for with just a mediocre house in the center. It takes more than that. Try adding some trees (which I'll get to later) or other buildings. 

Step 2: NO BONEMEAL. EVER.

Bonemeal makes unrealistic patches of flowers everywhere, and the default trees are really ugly. Actually build some trees yourself, if you're good with natural stuff. If not, it's a server. Get someone to teach you. Put flowers down yourself, and use them sparingly. A lot of flowers in one small area is unrealistic.

Step 3: Minecraft isn't all blocks, you know.


Adding slabs, stairs, fences, cobblestone walls, etc. will give your build depth and realism.

Step 4: Speaking of depth...

DON'T JUST HAVE BUILDINGS HAVE ONE FLAT WALL. Add pillars, or the other not-blocks of Minecraft, and make it your build better.

Step 5: Make sure it makes sense.

Does your build work with physics? Is a 20-ton stone structure floating on a glass pillar? Is your skyscraper really that tall without support? Unless your build is really sci-fi oriented, think to yourself, "Hmm, would this stay up in real life?"

Step 6 & 7: Build things you see in reality, and use these for practice!

Search your community for interesting buildings on your way to school, work, whatever, and try to make it in MC. Not only will this help you build more realistically, but it'll help you practice as well.

Step 8: Look at what other people have done, but DON'T COPY THEM.

I am NOT telling you to build exactly what the admin/owner builds and try to get a rank off of it, it'll probably most likely get you banned. But do pay attention to the techniques advanced builders use, and take them into consideration when building.

Step 9: (Most Important) Take your time! Minecraft isn't a race!

I can't stress this enough, a lot of people on MineActivity try to rush a build. This will result in a bad build. Don't rush, unless you're in a timed building competition. This is probably the best advice someone can give, not some fancy technique with stairs and slabs.
