Hello all! I haven't posted a blog in a while, I think around eight months so I thought I'd had a crack at one. In this blog I will be discussing why age does not matter for servers and staff.I know, I know. You must be thinking to yourself " Of course age matters if you want a successful server. I am here to tell you that it does not. In no way should age matter when you're picking staff or if you are staff.

So you log on to a server and the first thing you might see in the chat is a friendly little player saying "welcome to the server (your username)". You might dismiss this and just get to playing or you may say thank you back to them, either way, you will eventually start exploring. After a while of playing and exploring the server, you run into a bit of a problem, you find the biggest duplication glitch in Minecraft history. You decide to report it to an admin and the admin fixes it no problem. You continue with enjoying yourself on the server and after another long while of playinf, you find an invincibility glitch. You then report the glicth to the same admin whom you reported to earlier. They fix and and you go off on your way. You don't find any more glitches in your playing time so you decide to chat with some people. The admin also joins the chat and is quite respective about other peoples opinions. Everyone you are talking to are very intelligent and have an amazing understanding of how the server works and of how it works. After a while of chatting, you dedide to log out. You say your goodbyes and then log off and go do something else. You think you might be playing on that server more than you would have expected yourself to.

The next day, you log on and the same people are there again. They greet you with warm hellos and you go off to playng. After around an hour or so a new player comes on. You greet them the same way you were greeted when you first joined the server. After around ten minutes the player starts to rage and cuss at everyone. The admin politely asks him to calm down and tries to see if there is any problem. The player just continues to scream in chat with all caps and threatens to hack the server. He starts typing out racial slurrs and cuss words. The admin kicks the player from the server telling him to stop. He comes back and just continues. This results in a ban for the player.

What was the purpose of the short story above? It was to show people that even though you could perceive the new player as a child and the admin as an adult, they might not have been. Did you notice how I did not mention an age for the admin or player? But in your head you might have presumed the player to be an immature child and the admin to be a mature adult. I am now going to say the ages I actually had in mind for them. I had pictured the admin to be around the age of twelve and the new player to be around the age of seventeen. I was showing how it doesn't matter how old you are, what matters is your level of maturity and comprehension. The rest of the server I had pictured to be all scattered ages. I see so many server websites with forums that have staff application sections with the first or second thing on them is "How old are you". It makes me sad when servers are looking for new staff but choose the immature nineteen-year-old instead of the mature and respectful eleven-year-old.

I would like to say that if a server owner sees this post and has an minimum age to be staff on their server, to take it off. It makes people sad knowing that they can't even try to be a part of the server staff because they are too young. And I know that sometimes you hide it by saying "You aren't experienced enough but this nineteen-year-old is," even though that nineteen-year-old has only been playing on the server for around three weeks while you have been playing on it for around six months.
I mean, sure there are immature children and mature adults but there are also mature children and immature adults. Just keep this in mind next time you want to own a server and need staff.

I am done for today and am glad to be back. By the way, see if you can guess my age in the comments.

This is one of the blogs that I am extremely happy that made the popular reel because it deals with such an important subject to me. Thank a bunch everyone!

Happy is out. P.S. I do know that you do mature while aging, however there are people who are mature from a young age and people who don't show any signs of maturity. P.P.S. The story was made up, I wanted to make a realistic environment and I believe I have succeeded. P.P.P.S. THIS IS MY OPINION.

There a thread like this made a while back. The guy who made it was a nine year old kid who said that age doesn't matter. In his post he stated that he was mature because he claimed to be taking college classes and stuff and was smarter than the average adult. What most people don't understand is that INTELLIGENCE DOES NOT EQUAL MATURITY. Bragging about being smart doesn't make you mature, it makes you LESS mature.

The author seems to think that because people of one age can sometimes be as (im)mature as people of different age, they are equally likely to be as (im)mature, which is false. Of course young people are more likely to be immature. Of course it matters when you are considering potential candidates for an admin position.

You're missing the point. You should actually get to know someone so you KNOW how mature they are instead of making assumptions based on their age. And if for whatever reason you really need to have some sort of age limit, make it a guideline, not a hard-set rule.

It takes a lot of time to get to know somebody well. Years, maybe. It takes ten times as much time to get to know ten different people. It is very, very hard to really get to know someone online in a meaningful way. If there are more than 5 people on your server, and they aren't your real life buddies, you are never going to know all of them very well.
So, if you are considering ten people for an admin position, you should absolutely take their ages into account. Obviously, this is not the only thing you should take into account, but it's one of them.

Well, I personally think you shouldn't even consider someone for an admin position if you don't know them pretty well.

Imagine that you have two friends, Alice and Bob. You've met them online a couple of months ago. You skype and play games with them every week. You know that they are about equally competent and reasonable people, and neither is some sort of an assholish troll. At the same time you don't know them the way you know your childhood friends or siblings. You don't know exaclty how each of them is going to handle a tricky of difficult situation. Also, one of your friends is 12, while another is 18.

Now, you want to offer one of them an admin position. Whom should you chose? I would go with a 18 year old every time. Both of them might be reasonable as far as I know, bet there's much smaller chance that a 18 year old will someday flip out over something silly and will unexpectedly do something dumb.

So age does matter. OP doesn't seem to think so, saying that: "it doesn't matter how old you are, what matters is your level of maturity and comprehension". But maturity is correlated with age. Age is objective and easy to measure, while maturity is not. So you use age as an estimate for maturity, and base decisions on that.

I'd pick the 12-year-old; they probably have a higher maturity rate.

If you have two graphs, both with y-intercept of 0, and a point on the first graph (representing the 12-year-old's maturity development) has the point (12, 15), and the other one (representing the 18-year-old's maturity) has the point (18, 15), then the first one has a larger slope, and from that point on, the 12-year-old would actually be more mature than the 18-year-old.

Of course, this is assuming that people mature at the same rate throughout their entire lives, but even if we take the speedup of puberty into account, 18 is around the point when maturity starts to slow down, and 12-ish is when it begins to speed up, which makes the 12-year-old's maturity even HIGHER relative to the 18-year-old.

Yes, I just disproved your rationalization of ageism with math. And science.

You have missied the entire point of the blog. After reading, you still say "pick the 18 year old". Why, sure their bodies have matured and maybe their intellegence but so what? You said they are both equal. Why wouldn't you just pick both or have a seperate contest?

Ageism is a real, serious problem that needs to be addressed. Thank you for writing this.
