How I think it should be, since we can see that the colours of the candles are part of the wax, and not just on the surface as the current crafting recipe insinuates, I think. But my idea does not really work either since I want the wick to always be over the beeswax in the crafting table, without the dye needing to be in a specific place.

Note that these recipes can also be used in the crafting area in the survival inventory
