Based on the Neo-Beta data pack by SkyDeckAGoGo, go check it out!

Modern Beta -- Create Beta-like worlds with modern biomes!

This terrain generation data pack emulates classic terrain generation from the Minecraft Beta days and combines it with the biomes and oceans of modern Minecraft, for those who want an improved vanilla-style experience!

All structures, ores, etc. generate! Survival-complete!

More screenshots, using the Golden Days and Classic Skies resource packs: Album

This data pack is still in active development. Terrain gen may change as more Custom Worlds features are added or due to feedback. Please note that classic seeds like Glacier or gargamel may not generate as you remember them; this was a compromise made to accommodate decently sized oceans (~50% of terrain is water).

    Features:

    Classic and expansive beach generation

Beaches as they were in pre-Beta 1.8 return as both a terrain feature and oceanside biomes!

Modern Beta [1.16.4] -- Create Beta-like worlds with modern biomes! Minecraft Data Pack

Uniform Height Variation Across Most Biomes

Terrain is no longer restricted to set heights for most biomes. Find awesome mountains and cliffs around every corner!

Modern Beta [1.16.4] -- Create Beta-like worlds with modern biomes! Minecraft Data Pack

    All Main Biomes Included

Most biomes from vanilla Minecraft are included, with humidity/temperature-based distribution modeled after pre-Beta 1.8 distribution. You shouldn't expect to see a snowy taiga next to a desert and can hope to see inviting warm waters around jungles!

Biomes removed in Beta 1.8 return as well! Look for shrublands, rainforests, and more!

Modern Beta [1.16.4] -- Create Beta-like worlds with modern biomes! Minecraft Data Pack

    All Structures Included

All structures generate as they do in vanilla Minecraft, including ocean monuments, pillager outposts, villages, and strongholds!

To change the seed for terrain and biome generation, open Modern Beta/data/minecraft/dimension/overworld.json and update the two "seed" fields to your desired numeric seed! I recommend providing the same seed in-game as well to provide a consistent experience, as it appears structure (villages, strongholds etc.) and feature (beaches, trees, caves, etc.) placement uses the in-game seed, random or not. Use this site to convert text seeds into the numeric format.

    Installation:
    1. Download the .zip file and extract the folders.
    2. (Optional) Edit the overworld.json file as described above with your seed.
    3. In Minecraft, enter the Create a New World screen and select Data Packs.
    4. Drag Modern Beta into the game window and move it into 'Selected'. The data pack should be ordered above the Default data pack.
    5. (Optional) If using BAC Advancements, drag Modern Beta BAC Compatibility into the game window and move it into 'Selected'. The data pack should be ordered above the BAC data pack.
    6. Create the world!

    Known Issues:

    • Currently, Custom World data pack inter-compatibility is quite poor, and you should expect issues if you use Modern Beta with any other overworld-modifying data pack or plugin. This data pack does not modify the Nether nor the End in any way so there shouldn't be issues there.
    • Modern Beta has been tested to work as expected on vanilla and fresh Spigot servers, but I can make no guarantees with compatibility with other server software or plugins (see above).
    • In the uncommon event that terrain extends above y=127, only stone will generate above that height instead of the expected grass/dirt. (MC-187716) (Temporary fix added in v1.6)
NOTE: Custom worlds/dimensions are still experimental and may be unstable and prone to issues.

    To-Do:

    • Re-implement one or more of the mountain biomes. On the fence about this one, maybe if 1.17 brings significant changes to them and if I can make them fairly distinct.

    Feedback and comments welcome!

Feel free to work off of this pack but please credit me! If you wish to repackage the data pack in a modpack, please ask first. Please do not redistribute the data pack alone as-is, I would prefer if you just linked back here!

hey, is there a way I can use this on a realm? i originally used the fabric mod and generated a bunch of chunks and used that as the new realm world, but it appears corruption occurred shortly after as buildings disappeared and lighting was permanently bugged in some places. i decided to use the data pack version but any new chunks i generate in the world on are vanilla.

I do not use Realms, but my understanding is that you should be able to download or create a new world, add the data pack, reset the Realms world, and upload the modified world.

Such a wonderful mod, I missed this map generation, do you think it's possible to get mods with map generation like Biomes O' Plenty and other structure terrain to work with this? My Minecraft would genuienly be perfect, as of right now, it seems this Datpack overrides all of that! Merry Christmas

Sorry, the data pack is not compatible with biome mods. Perhaps you could try Beta+, which is also for Forge.

Hi there. So I want to use the beta dimension without the datapack affecting my overworld. I do as you say and delete the overworld.json (the one in the dimension file, I have also tried deleting all 3 overworld.json files found using the search function). The terrain appears to follow the normal seed map, all biomes are where they should be for vanilla, but the mountain biomes generate much much much taller than normal, usually to around 250 Y, which isn't normal. How do I get the beta dimension without the datapack affecting my overworld?

Been a long time fan of this, was actually surprised to see that you now have a mod on fabric and custom dimensions. Keep up the great work.
    EDIT: https://imgur.com/a/jNaL3Dw

Picture of tall mountains that results from deleting the overworld.json file from the dimension folder. Datapack list, seed for that specific world, and F3 screen provided.

thank you so much for the update! Quick question, is there a way proper way to disable the datapack? I deleted the datapack after disabling it with the /datapack command, and it removed my abiliity to go to the nether and end, even using the "/execute in minecraft:" it only shows Overworld. Thanks so much for your help

First of all, great work with this pack (as well as the alpha pack and the modern beta mod).

I've got a question: Are the mountains supposed to be waaaaaaaaaay taller than the rest of the terrain? I am running a paper server with only this pack installed, and only the geyser and floodgate plugins installed.

Hi there, that is not intended. If you changed the world seed in the overworld.json file, can you double-check that the formatting is correct? The seed field also should not have been removed completely.

Not sure what the problem is, I made a fresh Paper server to test the data pack and everything appears to work fine.

I generated a new world, placed the data pack in the datapacks folder, deleted the region folder, then regenerated the world. No issue.

Huh, I think it might have been user error then. I did what you did and no more massive mountains.

I think I just didn't know how to install a data pack on a server properly. I generated the world, stopped the server, deleted everything in the world/ folder except for datapacks/, copied Modern Beta up in there, and restarted the server. Possible deleting those other files in world/ caused the issue. Whoops.

In the working world, there are no mountain biomes at all now. Is that how it's supposed to work?

Edit: just saw mountains under notable exclusions. Nice.

I had some problems in my survival world recently, some nether biomes are spawning in the overworld, I created my world with V1.6 (Modern Beta) and Incendium by Starmute but i never had any compatibility issues since when i created the world so this is happening only now. I believe this happened when i changed the game version to 1.16.4 in order to install fabric, however I don't know if this is really the problem.

Been having an issue with this recently, it worked fine for a bit, and generated terrain that was very similar to Beta generation, but now whenever I generate a world with different seeds, it bugs out and keeps making the same world with minor differences. it keeps spawning me on the same little island, facing a flower forest hill, but with a different seed (When I type /seed) and minor changes to the surrounding area, but still too much consistency across new worlds for comfort.

It didnt do this before I was fiddling with other datapacks, but i'm still loading same file (and the backwards compatibility version) with no other data packs, and it's still doing it.

Do you plan to add the Sky Dimension from Beta (in a modern way) in the future? I am asking this because the creator of Neo-Beta said he would add it to the next update but his datapack didn't receive an update in 2 months, I am really worried to be honest about it being discontinued because Neo-beta and Modern beta are my favorite datapacks and i would like to use both in 1.17 and beyond.
