Neo-Beta Plus: Beta 1.7.3 terrain with modern blocks, structures and mobs! The sister-pack to Neo-Beta.

b3spectacled_'s Modern Beta pack: Modern biomes with classic noise generation!

    Overview

This datapack utilises the new biome and dimension settings in the latest snapshot to recreate classic minecraft terrain generation as accurately as possible, featuring every original biome including the shrublands and the seasonal forest/rainforest, classic sand and gravel beaches and almost 1:1 accurate terrain generation to pre-beta 1.8 world.

Note: due to changes in the way terrain is handled in later versions, terrain is not 1:1 how it was in beta.1.7.3 and below, however I tried to get it as close as I could so it should hopefully be similarly nostalgic :)

    Features

    Old biomes return

    A classic shrublands
Classic biomes have been accurately reimplemented. The biomes included are forests, seasonal forests, rainforests, plains, shrublands, savannahs, deserts, taigas and tundras. Each one made to generate accurately to their original counterpart.

    Gravel and sand beaches
    Classic style beaches
The clean looking original beaches have been re-implemented and work almost exactly like they did in the original versions.

Full height variation across all biomes

One of the best aspects of classic terrain generation was biome could spawn at any height, leading to crazy cliff faces and mountain ranges that spanned hundreds of blocks and transitioned seamlessly without ugly borders or rivers between them. This has been reimplemented and each biome can now generate at anywhere between sea level and 128 blocks high.

    To install/use

    1. Download the attached .zip file and extract it (IMPORTANT).
    2. In Minecraft, click 'create new world' and click on 'datapacks' in the world creation screen
    3. Drag the 'neo-beta-pack' folder contained inside the folder you extracted into Minecraft.
    4. Click on the datapack icon to move it over to the 'selected' tab
Click done then click create new world.

    Notes

Pack is currently unfinished as are Minecraft's custom dimension settings so expect things to change come later versions and snapshots. Feedback and suggestions for new features are welcome as well as bug reports. Thanks and enjoy! :)

did you use a datapack generator (like misode) to make this? or you did it all by hand?

Made it by hand following slicedlime's vanilla datapack example files in his github. If you look at his youtube channel he also has some tutorials that may help you out

I checked out the latest V1.5 (24/01/2021) update you released and I have to say, I'm not at all happy about the change of noise. While I do agree that there should be more bodies of water in the terrain, I'd rather have the noise that is more faithful to actual beta terrain (kind of objectively, since glacier looks pretty close to the original).

Also, I noticed that ravines generate in the beta terrain, I don't think that's too good either but it's just a minor issue compared to the noise thing.

Either way, I'm glad you're going to work on this great data pack again, thank you very much for creating it!

Thanks for the feedback! The idea behind the noise changes was that despite some of the seeds looking similar, I didn't feel like the original noise felt beta enough, the height variation was way too dramatic and there wasn't enough flat land and ocean, but if people really don't like it then I can change it back, no problem.

Truth be told, the seeds are never going to be *exactly* the same due to how the modern game handles generation at a fundemental level. If you want 100% accurate beta terrain, mods do a better job of that than a datapack ever will. I more wanted to get the feeling of beta in vanilla than having it look exact so i guess that was my mindset with the noise changes.

What I may do is bring back the old noise generation and include the new one as a seperate dimension for those who want more even terrain. (Neo-Beta Plus has the new noise generation too so I guess there's that. Also ravines spawning is a bug lol, I'll fix it today. Cheers again!

First of all, thank you very much for taking my feedback into account. I'd just like to add that I think the noise from V1.5 fits perfectly in Neo-Beta Plus and it should remain in that data-pack, it does indeed capture the general essence of the beta noise, as you said. I do feel you could maybe mess around with it a little further to slightly increase the height of hills (but really, very slightly, not much at all, it's nearly perfect). Either way, you're right in that the accuracy of mods will probably stay superior to that of a datapack but I highly appreciate the change you made - keeping the old noise; this amalgam of current biome distribution + old, nearly accurate noise creates an interesting look and feel by itself, if that makes any sense. It's very unique and I like that a lot.

No worries, thanks for the feedback! And I'm glad you think the noise works well for neo-beta plus, I'm personally quite happy with it. I may look into increasing the height slightly, personally I think big mountains are currently rare enough to be surprising when you run into them but common enough to make the world gen look interesting so If I change anything it may only be subtle, but either way I'll look into it :)

And yeah I know what you mean about it looking unique, if anything its a throwback to the original "neo-beta" custom world settings from way back when which this datapack was originally inspired by to begin with, so I guess in that sense it makes sense to keep it as it is. Regardless, I added both as seperate dimensions so people can pick and choose which noise generator they like :)

It might even sound like a bad idea, but an alternative version for the beta 1.8 generation looks a lot like the new generation but has its differences such as the swamps and biomes that were eliminated after the passage of 1.7 like the extreme hills

Ive been having an issue with the Neo Beta Plus version, any biome in the nether that registers as the "Nether Wastes" is covered with grass instead of normal Nether-rack.

Also, Im struggling to find biomes past the two new ones implemented with the "Rain forest" and "autumnal forest" so I wanted to ask if anything like the Mesa, or general mountain biomes were removed, stuff like that?

I finally install it on my server. I wanted it to be a dimension and it took some time to convert it in 1.16.3, but the result is great !

Nice! Also yeah i've recieved a lot of requests to make it a dimension again, the problem is I want the pack to be able to be used out the box without commands so I'll need to create a new version just for those who want it as a dimension. I'll get around to it but I'm not too keen on having multiple different packs for essentially the same thing.

Also I'm currently working on an update for 1.16.4 so it may come as part of that, stay tuned.

How I use it there is not command.

I have a villager that sell a custom carrot on a stick in the shape of a key. Players buy the key to the villager and the key do the "execute" command in your dimension.

This way you can create many dimensions each with a key.

If you want I could send you my WIP pack if you want to add teleportation key like I did.

Is there any chance to make a conversion of this terrain generation for Bedrock Edition? Recently, in a beta version, custom biomes were added. Even if the seeds wouldn't look remotely similar, it'd be interesting to see such terrain in BE, I think.

As mentioned above, i have enough on my plate at the moment to make managing this pack difficult so managing a bedrock version at the same time isn't on the cards unfortunately. If someone wants to translate my work to bedrock though, feel free.

If you're using a texture pack like golden days, you need to remove the foliage and grass colour textures since it leaves all the new biomes black. This datapack recreates beta foliage colours anyway so there is no need for texture packs to do that

Only if you change the seed of the datapack in that world's datapack folder. Datapacks are per-world so if you change the data in one, none of your other worlds will be affected by it. Hope this helps :)

Thank you for your answer friend, you are doing a marvelous job by bringing the beta world generation to a data pack so we don't need to wait for mods that require a specific game version, it was sad when BWG/OWG (Better/Old World Generation) and other mods stopped at 1.7.10. However i still believe that the Data Pack System could improve a little bit by allowing seeds at the world creation screen, Mojang focus on the big stuff but sometimes they forget about the little details XD.I hope they allow seeds (world screen) in the future :)

Unfortunately random seeds aren't supported by custom worlds yet, to change the seed you have to go into the datapack, into the "overworld.json" file in the dimensions folder and change the seed yourself. Hope this is helpful for you.

Neo beta plus doesn't generate new biomes, it only extends the biomes within neo-beta to include modern terrain features such as new trees, structures, rivers, etc.. its also not finished so stay tuned for updates.
If you want something more modern, b3spectacled's modern beta pack (link in OP) does just that. The reason why i took this route for neo beta plus was to not impede on b3spectacled's work :)
