Rainbeau's Flying Villages

Airborne NPC Towns Drifting on Sky Islands

(A Data Pack for Minecraft 1.19, 1.19.1 & 1.19.2)

This pack adds villages that float serenely amongst the clouds, their buildings constructed on small rocky islands that somehow hang suspended in midair. (Hey, it's not like you've never seen floating rocks in Minecraft worlds before!) The buildings in these flying villages are mostly based on a mix of vanilla plains and savanna buildings, though with various design alterations and construction material changes.

Villagers in flying villages can appear with any of the various villager skins, including the unused jungle and swamp villager skins. I'm sure I could come up with a canonical reason for that if I really wanted to, but honestly, as I'd already made that change in my undersea and floating villages, I just figured I might as well make it here, too.

You'll also occasionally come across a flying village that's been invaded by illagers, so be appropriately wary.

I tried very hard to make all the dozens of islands in the pack look "natural" and interesting, but, well, I'm well aware that I fell short at times. Some of the islands definitely look better than others. I'll work on improving the overall aesthetics in future updates, but in the meantime, if you're inclined to try your hand at fixing my mistakes (or even at creating all-new islands for the villages), feel free to send me your NBT files, and I'll happily incorporate your creativity into the pack (with acknowledgement, of course).

"Flying Villages" is probably compatible with other data packs that alter vanilla biomes or add new structures, but I can't make any guarantees. It'll generally be less compatible with data packs or mods that add a lot of new biomes, simply because flying villages won't appear in those non-vanilla biomes. However, my own "Sky Islands" and "Water World" data packs are exceptions to that rule, as are "Terralith" and "William Wythers' Overhauled Overworld," as I've specifically made "Flying Villages" compatible with them.

If you have cheats enabled, you can type "/locate structure seavil:flying_village" to locate the nearest flying village.

Just as an FYI, though I'm currently working on backporting my other 1.19 data packs to 1.18, this particular pack will remain available only for 1.19, as it depends too heavily on options only added in 1.19.

Put simply, in 1.19, a custom structure can start at any height, and can extend up to 128 blocks away from its starting point in any direction. "Flying Villages" takes full advantage of those allowances, with villages starting 100 blocks above ground level and expanding freely in all three dimensions. In 1.18, on the other hand, custom structures have to start at ground level (or well below ground level, which is obviously irrelevant here), and cannot extend more than 80 blocks from the starting point. Flying villages in 1.18 would need to be smaller, lower, and much flatter, and even then, it would be all but impossible to make sure they didn't routinely intersect hills or other terrain features.

This data pack is now (more) compatible with "Terralith" and "William Wythers' Overhauled Overworld," as I've added biomes unique to those data packs to the list of biomes in which flying villages can generate. I've also updated its compatibility with my own "Sky Islands" and (soon to be released) "Water World" packs.

Note that if you're using this pack together with "Sky Islands," you need to either update both of them or neither of them, as I've changed the way compatibility works. :)

The designs of these villages are just lovely, an absolute treat to explore every time I run across one. I paired this pack with this world gen pack and a handful of others to create myself a custom sort of dreamlike survival experience, and while the generation clashes in some interesting ways (which is to be expected considering how out-there the noodle world gen is), there's something uniquely magical about seeing these villages floating in the middle of this surreal twisting landscape.

You do good work, sir.

Thanks!

I'd imagine that using this pack with the noodle world pack would be much like using it with my own "Sky Islands." Conceptually, they're a great fit, but mechanically, since there isn't any clearly-defined "ground level," there's no way to be sure the villages don't intersect terrain. :D

Just updated this to make villages a bit less common. I know I said I was going to revise the underside of the islands - and I *have* actually started working on them - but I've just been tied up with other stuff, and so haven't really given the time they need yet....

Underground villages are certainly possible, and I'll admit I've thought about them, but they're not something I have any plans to tackle in the immediate future.

These villages are absolutely magical!

My only problem is that they are a bit too common. Is there something I can change to lower their frequency in the world?
