UPDATE: Buffed Mobs is now officially succeeded by Betta Balance, which does everything Buffed Mobs does and more :]
Betta Balance can be found here: https://www.planetminecraft.com/data-pack/betta-balance/
In Minecraft Classic, four iconic mobs were added to the game; zombies, skeletons, spiders, and creepers.
Since then, sprinting was added, enchantments were added, and shields were added...
It is now incredibly easy to survive an encounter with any of the original hostile mobs. All you have to do is run, block, or fight back with enchanted weapons.
"Surviving the first night" let's play videos are a thing of the past, because there's no tension anymore.
Creepers lost their meme status as house stealers and grim reapers, because they can't chase you if you run 16 blocks away, and they no longer strafe when they hiss.
And no one is afraid of the dark anymore...
This datapack fixes that ;]
(or at least I tried to)
With this datapack, mobs are harder, better, faster, stronger.
I tried my best to rebalance mob stats and make mobs just as menacing as they were in Minecraft beta, taking into account the addition of sprinting and other features in modern Minecraft. For example, since you couldn't easily outrun spiders in Minecraft beta without sprinting, you can't easily outrun spiders in this datapack WITH sprinting >:]
While a mod would be better than a datapack (datapacks can't edit specific behaviors of mobs), I don't really know how to make a mod. If you develop mods, feel free to make a mod that takes my balancing ideas and improves on them :]
Changes:
* ALL zombie variants (except for babies) have increased melee damage to match how much they had in beta (melee damage was nerfed in modern Minecraft).
* All classic mobs are sped up just enough that it is equally as hard to run from them WITH sprinting, as it was to run from them in old Minecraft (which didn't have sprinting).
* Increased the follow range of skeletons, creepers, and ghasts (this does not affect the aggro range of these mobs, datapacks can't change that unfortunately).
Ghasts: 64 -> 128
Skeletons: 16 -> 32
Creepers: 16 -> 24
Zombies: 35 -> 24
Spiders: 16

Buffed Mobs v2.0 : by ninjakitty844 05/16/2025 6:19:31 pmMay 16, 2025 @ 10:19 pm UTC
Buffed Mobs is now a duplicate of Betta Balance with everything removed except for mob buffs :]
This is for anyone who likes Betta Balance but only wants harder mobs without changes to vanilla game mechanics.
Buffed Mobs' original mob movement speeds were based on vibes. But when working on Betta Balance I was able to more accurately calculate the speeds each mob should have. The player's sprinting speed is 130% of their walking speed, so I made hostile mobs 130% faster.
The mob movement speeds in Buffed Mobs should be much more accurate now, but if you wish to use an old version of Buffed Mobs, it can be found on Modrinth.

Have something to say?
I like small changes to mobs like this, most datapacks change mobs too much.
If you run a Minecraft server, you can use a software called "PurpurMC" (this is different from PaperMC)
And in the config, purpur.yml, you can enable creepers circling around the player when they hiss :]
It's like the old creeper strafing behavior, but less jank and more intentional-looking.
There's a mod called Nostalgic Tweaks; it's on sort of a hiatus right now, but previously the creator was thinking about adding in the old creeper strafing. Maybe it will still be added in the future.
