Hey yall! Panda here!

So… today, we’re doing a random pop quiz! (Ik, i’m evil)
Question 1- how many bones does a shark have?
Question 2- about how long does a fishing line take to decompose?
Question 3- what are five big threats to seals?

That’s all for today! Please don’t look up the answers, it spoils the fun.

Hi! New to this group and trying to revive it!

So, did you know the vaquita (a small porpoise from the Gulf of California) is one of the most, if not THE most endangered species? There’s only about seven to ten of them left!

Their biggest threats are fishing nets that they get stuck in, or poachers, who want to show off rare creatures.

Thanks for reading, have a good day!

ok so i keep seeing videos of people holding these lil guys like aww yes theyre so cute

but they are also
deadly

this is a blue ring octopus, one of the most venomous in the ocean, and theres not a very high chance youll survive, and theres no real cure. basically you either get lucky or you dont DONT TOUCH THEM

most of the time, sharks are just curious, and don't want to hurt people, but end up having to defend themselves because WE provoke them. just be nice to the sharks. theyre just looking

Fun fact: Cephalopods (octopedes, squid, cuttlefish, nautilus) have blue blood! It's blue when oxygenated and clear when not!
This is because instead of having hemoglobin, which is the protein in our blood that transports oxygen and gives it the red colour due to being iron based, their blood has hemocyanin, which is copper based and is speculated to be more efficient in low oxygen environments! I believe some species of crabs also have this blue, copper-based blood.

Fun sad fact: Tunas must swim their whole life or they die. Their gils are built to work by force moving as the water isnt pumped into the organ by itself. They also sleep on somehow low energy mode to save energy and keep themselves alive

Fun fact: Sea robins (also known as gurnards) are fish with six "legs" that they use to walk around and taste things!

They are related to sea lions and scorpion fish, and have a few spines. Some resources say they have a mild poison in those spines, and others say they have no toxins at all, so I don't know anymore!

They also croak with muscles connected to their swim bladder!

Fun fact: Seals are voluntary breathers! Meaning that they cannot breathe unconsciously like we do and have to do it consciously. Their nose flaps are actually closed by default to prevent water from entering!

I imagine this helps them hold their breathe when underwater, since the fact that not-breathing is the default would make it so they don't have to fight against the urge to breathe? Fascinating.

Angelonasher • 2025-05-16 00:14:03

Half of their brain sleeps and the other stays awake! (Although, some resources say that they only do this when sleeping in water, so I have no idea what they do when they sleep on land.)

Kraggle09 • 2025-05-15 23:02:41

So how do they breathe at night? Do they just set themselves to breath automatically, or are they semiconscious when sleeping to manage that… either way interesting fact.

TheGuyAcrossSpace • 2025-05-15 23:01:08

thank you for casting manual breathing

Fun fact: Nautilus are the only species of cephalopods who are unable to colour change!
They are also the only cephalopods with a hard outer shell, one heart instead of three, and grooves and ridges on their tentacles (of which they can have between fifty and ninety!) rather than suckers.

true seals also have fused hips, which is why they need to "gallumph" on land, rather than being able to bring their hind flippers below them to sort of walk like sea lions do
