Alternately train the cat to recognize the command "getting up" (or similar).
Cotrarry to folk wisdom cats are [to a degree] trainable….

"I just want to be friends" is not a substitue for a romantic relationship; the 'friend zone' is dreaded.
But, if it's over, it can be an olive branch / palative [indicating the ex is not a 'bad person', but there was "merely 🙄" a lack of 'chemistry ]

I'd not expect that to be recognized by the other [broken_up_with] party until some time has passed.

I think you did. He can't force you to like him, and even if you don't want to hurt his feelings you still have a right to make your own decisions and like who you like. I guess you can just let him talk, figure things out, but make it clear it's over. <3
