i assume you're referring to 1.21.120. from what i understand, the issue was not only massively overexaggerated but also windows-exclusive. your worlds should still be there.

that being said, minecraft doesn't do anything to your worlds until you open the game, so if you're still concerned, you can use a file manager to backup your worlds manually without having to go through the the game's UI (though you may have to plug your tablet into a PC to access the world files).

once the pack is unzipped, you can just import them using the launcher like you would any java edition skin. there are only two possible compatibility issues:
    1. java edition only supports 64x64 and 64x32 pixel images.
    2. java edition does not support transparency on the inner layer.
something you should also keep in mind (just in general) is that wide model skins and slim model skins are not interchangeable. if you see large black lines on a skin's arms or hands, that means you're trying to using a slim skin on the wide model.

objectively, java edition is probably in a much better state than bedrock edition is*, but it also makes so many and such infuriating intentional choices that, while i would definitely jump to java edition if bedrock support ever ended, i probably wouldn't ever play vanilla ever again.

*a lot of this stems from the vanilla resources being so much more competent, but a lot of it also stems from the game's presentation just being so much more hardcoded, which, as a resource pack artist, kinda sucks a little.

i can't imagine that would affect load times so significantly as to be relevant.

i personally prefer having one main version of a pack over keeping multiple smaller ones up-to-date. it's just simpler both to develop and to install, and in some cases, it can also take less space than having two different installations of the pack for different minecraft versions.

'course, i mostly work in the resource pack space, so i can't say for certain how i'd deal with data packs. i imagine my approach would change due to their comparative complexity, but i can't say for certain without actually making one.

minecraft does not load every overlay at once. the overlay system was specifically made to avoid doing that.

bedrock edition is built off of pocket edition, actually. (if bedrock edition actually was based on the legacy console editions, given how beloved they were and still are, i imagine people would probably have a completely different opinion of bedrock edition.)

and personally, i much prefer the bedrock edition resource pack system. there are just way more things you can do with a resource pack on bedrock edition, and the functionality that's shared between editions is (mostly) handled better imo. (the vanilla resources are absolute garbage though.)

that is the exact opposite of what hardcoded means.

this file also defines the file path for the saddle texture. if you don't mind, could i know what pack this is? that would make it easier to diagnose the problem.

does the pack include any entity files? these are json files in directory "[ROOT]/entity/" that control various things about an entity's presentation, including what texture files it uses. if it does, try looking in there to see if the texture file paths are changed.

side note, but if a pack is not quite to your liking, it is generally advised to make a separate resource pack and apply that pack on top instead of editing the original pack. that way, if the original pack ever needs an update, you don't have to completely remake all your changes.

terralith is more focused on more realistic biomes, but it does have a few fantasy-ish ones. one of them just straight-up has blue grass and amethyst crystals growing out of the ground. (and then there's also incendium if you want a nether counterpart)

the files are just "textures/entity/[animal_name]/[animal_name]_[variant_name]". so to retexture cold pigs, the file would be "textures/entity/pig/pig_cold".

on java edition, you'd need to have some kind of mod that allows you to do such things. i am not knowledgeable enough on the subject to name a specific one.
on bedrock edition, you can probably just replace the models and animations that whichever entity you're editing uses. depending on complexity, you may also have to take a look at the animation controllers and/or the entity file, but probably not.

bedrock edition does not have any of java edition's codebase in it. they are written in entirely different languages.

okay, so, i did some extra research, by which i mean i looked around youtube to see if sheep even worked this way on legacy console edition. i couldn't find any videos of anyone dyeing a sheep, but i did find something that's probably more helpful: turns out the LCE version of the pack does have custom geometry for quite a few of its mobs, which i've never seen in an LCE pack before. meaning that even if you find a way to do sheep without remodeling them, you're probably going to have to find something that lets you remodel mobs anyway.

also, the base texture of the "wool" seems to be red instead of white, which is not how sheep are supposed to work, but is something 4j unfortunately has a history of doing.

theoretically, finding the legacy console edition version of the textures would probably offer some insight, since LCE set up its assets fairly similarly to java edition and never included custom geometry in its texture packs. only problem is that finding even regular LCE stuff is pretty difficult sometimes....

hmm. not sure i can help that much with the sheep, then. you're probably just going to have to find a mod that lets you remodel them.

as for painting backs, pretty sure they're painting/back.png.

if you're using java edition 1.21.5 or above, both the undercoat and the overcoat should be on completely separate textures from the rest of the sheep. bedrock edition does not handle sheep this way, instead using the alpha channel of the image to define which parts are tinted.

as for the paintings, assuming this isn't an issue with the other pack, you can probably just make the backboard texture transparent.

not sure what a cmd pack is, so i'm not entirely sure what the problem could be, but to explain the new limitation with item models, it's that all of the textures for a given item model must come from either just the block atlas or just the item atlas (it can't have textures from both).

assets/minecraft/atlases has files defining which textures go in which atlases. for simplicity's sake, the easiest way to make sure a texture goes onto the correct atlas is to put it in the corresponding texture folder (so, if you wanted a texture to go onto the block atlas, you would put it in the block folder).

it was very common for mojang to add textures before programming their corresponding objects back in the day. it would not have been unreasonable for the file to look like this.

that being said, according to the wiki, it didn't. the terrain.png for this version reportedly only included the textures for cobblestone and the top of grass. given that rd-132211 was never officially released, it's entirely possible and likely that the jar you have is simply inaccurate.

also, these aren't post-beta textures. this seems to be the file from indev 0.31 20100109-1939.
