Have you ever wondered how to detect rightclicks with datapacks?

Its easy! You can use either a carrot on a stick (coas) or a warped fungus on a stick (wfoas) to do this!

Step 1: Create a scoreboard: Do either "scoreboard objectives add rcd minecraft:used.item.minecraft.carrot_on_a_stick" if you want to detect rightclicking with the coas or "scoreboard objectives add rcd minecraft:used.item.minecraft.warped_fungus_on_a_stick" if you want to do so with a wfoas.

Step 2:
"execute as @a[​scores={rcd=1..}] at @s run <command>"(Replace <command> with the command you want to be run afer someone rightclicked)
This command should be constantly running, either in the main function of your datapack or in a commandblock!
It detects when somebody rightclicked once or more with the wfoas or coas! You can also check for a predicate at the same time to only make it work for items with specific nbt data but i wont explain that for now!
If you are using a datapack also add "execute as @a[scores={rcd=1..} run scoreboard players set @s rcd 0"
If you are using command blocks place a chain command block with this command above your previously placed repeating command block.

So… you can only detect rightclicking with wfoas and coas? Yes! But thats not big of an issue because you can retextute the item and make it look like something different using custom model data (which we will explain in a latter wallpost :) )

Heres our first Datapack Development tip!

Datapack Tip #1: When checking for NBT tags, use a predicate. You can enter NBT into the predicate, and it is way more optimised. Predicates also have more check types, so you can check for things like held items and location with little lag!

I also wanted to take this (rare) opportunity to say, I miss you, PMCer's. Back in October when we made this announcement, we thought after a few weeks, maybe at most a month, I would have a little more time and be in a groove with our small human and return to writing the Weekly's and be involved in this wonderful community once again. Turns out, she runs the show and requires basically every second of my time. She's lucky she's cute. 😛 I don't know when I'll start having time to write the newsletter again, but just know that it's always on my mind as are you 💙 Hope you are all doing great and are happy and healthy!
