    ok I know I just posted a skin that said it was my best skin but, just finished this up for my first skin pack in a long ass time, really happy with how it came out. Takes a lot from the skin I just posted, you'll notice, but I'm still elated because I haven't made a proper skin in literally like... 2 years.

    Kinda feel like Thor in Endgame lol :')

    This topic is something of a dead horse in a dark alleyway, but I'd like to say two things about teen skinners and teen skinning; 1. I'm disappointed in myself for not being able to recognize the intention/context/talent that goes into them, and 2. How they function in comparison to """"""""normal"""""""" (which I unfortunately have no alternate word for) Minecraft skinning. And third, I just want a lot of teen skinners to know that I'm huge fans of your work and wish I could talk to you and learn some things (specifically hair styles, how to shade hair has evaded me for years now). I'll toss a list at the bottom of some of my favorites.


    The approach to "teen skins" is to really take them as that - variations on a "teen skin", in the exact same way that people have made hundreds of thousands of "minecraft skins". It's the same perspective that a texture pack artist might have of skinners - the skin textures are a tiny element of the actual texture pack, and we, as skinners, have taken that little element with huge potential, and turned it into a vastly creative, in-depth, and dynamic canvas to paint and make things on.

    Teen skins are the same thing, really. They're a type of Minecraft skin that became so popular so quickly, that they evolved to become their own niche art form, that made the same breakthroughs in color and technique that we did (not to say that we're responsible for them coming up with things or that their versions are somehow worse, Juno's Hikari is a country mile better than my Nujabes, yikes). They have their own subcategories of styles, awesome communities, supportive comment posters (every comment section is like a basket of kittens good lord).

    In the same line as Speedy innovating with one of the first examples of a light source on a skin, teen skins will have a fantastic new way to make a hat (throwback to that time someone [im so sorry I can't remember who] made a hat by using the second layer to make an outer corner, and then using second layer to make a rim, so it kinda dipped in and back up) . I remember thinking how freakin cool that was. Again, I'm not saying by any means that "light sources" innovation is more impressive than making a hat, but it's the fact that there's the same type and level of development and progress and imagination, it's just all from a different perspective - how can I make this teen skin [minecraft skin] better/cooler? And that's really what this is all about (finger guns). Couple people have even combined the two genres, really - I think DragonsDungeon came to the realization I've written above much, much sooner than anyone else, and reaped the rewards pretty well.

    Hope this shed a little light for anyone who was still frustrated by teen skins. I might make a few myself (though frankly I have a hard time making skins regardless, done so many by now uhg). To all teen skinners out there, y'all are great lol.

    Juno is absurdly good and is top on this list because they're my favorite.

    Len-Kun has some fantastic technique

    Icy has a really unique mix of the two genres, new posts are always surprising me

    Venus' level of detail is impressive

    Yelloe's got some really good colors

    PBS with a dope simplistic style

    Bums is another great simple style user

    Illuminated's colors are on point, wish they would do more with such vibrancy though

    And Fell's been super consistent for so long





    Obviously there are a lot more people who deserve to be mentioned, and that's because I didn't start really paying attention to the teen skin community until way too late. Very genuinely, my bad.

    We find Noobator atop a mountain, many, many years in the future. A man approaches him from atop the mountain trail.

    "Oh Great Wise Noobator, my wife has left me, and my children weep! What do I do?" To which the great guru Noobator said;

    "A man once told me, never highlight two sandwiches in a row, unless there is a dark sandwich between them."

    "Thankyou, Noobator." And so, the man went back down the mountain.

    Many years later, the man returned, much older this time.

    "Oh Great Wise Noobator, my children have grown, and I cannot control them any more. They are running rampant! What do I do?" To which the great guru Noobator said;

    "A man once told me, after telling me the first bit, if you are to make a streak of light down the side of a leg or arm, never leave it without a parallel streak of dark, for otherwise, it will be unbalanced."

    The man was content. "Thankyou, Oh Great Noobator." And so the man went back down the mountain.

    Then, one day, many years later, the son of the man returned up the mountain trail. And he queried the great Noobator.

    "Oh Great and Powerful Noobator, what should I do with my life, now that my father is dead?"

    To this, the guru turned to the Sun, and held out his hand.

    "Once, a man told me, do not look at the Sun directly, for it will blind you."

    "Very wise, Guru, but this is not the answer I seek." And Noobator turned his head, and held out his hand to the lake below the mountain, and said;

    "Once, a man told me, do not walk near the water's edge, for fear of drowning."

    "Very sage, Guru, but this as well is not the answer I seek."

    Lastly, Noobator turned to a small drawing of Paint.NET's hue-shift slider, and held out his hand.

    "Usually, if you make a bad set of colors, they look good in another hue."

    The young man bowed while smiling, and hurried back down the mountain.

    And the guru Noobator sat for many more years, content.

    I see alotta people saying "oh I can't make good art because I'm bad at art" on a daily basis, and while the question is answered fairly frequently, I think it's important to let the answer actually sink in and marinate a lil, if you catch my drift; it gets better with time and practice. A ton of my pixel art stuff came after doodling little cubes and vents and engines that all turned out horribly, with awful colors and shaping and stuff like that. My drawing is atrocious but every now and then I'll hit a little spark of creativity and run with it. My writing used to be cheesy and straight-forward, without any meaningful development or pacing. But I worked on it when I felt like it; I never pushed myself to work on something I didn't want to, but whenever I looked up and said to myself "Hey, I feel like drawing a knight", or "You know what I'm gonna write about a guy from the 80's shooting stuff", I did it. I didn't hesitate at all, I just went ahead and did it. And doing something when you want to is how you get better; the passion is what pushes you to experiment, create, expand, and progress.

    Do stuff when it feels right, when you can put a little bit of love into the mix. Practice is good, but make sure it's good practice. Love ya
