The European green woodpecker is a bird of the Picidea family.
The female is similar to the males, but without the red patch on the cheek.
It mainly lives in forests of old trees but can be found just about anywhere as long as there are a few trees and plenty of anthills.
Compared to many woodpecker species, the European green woodpecker will prefer to forage on the ground, rarely pecking at trees.
It feeds almost exclusively on ants, being able to spend its day searching for anthills. Because of this, winters can sometimes be harsh for these birds.
