This is the SS Arthur M. Anderson. Famous for being the last ship in contact with SS Edmund Fitzgerald on the night of November 10, 1975, the night the Mighty Fitz foundered. The ship was built in Lorain, Ohio, 1952 by American Ship Building Co. and it is still in active service, hauling cargo throughout the Great Lakes today. The Arthur M. Anderson was also the second of the seven AAA class ships among her. Those being the SS Philip R. Clarke, the SS Cason J. Callaway, the SS Reserve, the SS J. L. Mauthe, the SS Armco, the SS Edward B. Greene, and the SS Williiam Clay Ford. Two of them are the Arthur M. Anderson's sister ships: the SS Philip R. Clarke and the SS Cason J. Callaway. Its sea trials were held on August 7, 1952, and it carried its first load of cargo on August 12 at the Two Harbors dock. It has been refitted several times including its refit of 1975 which added a 120 ft. long mid-section and added 6,000 tons to the ship's gross tonnage. In 1981, it was also was fitted with a self-unloading boom to help it's loading and unloading ability. The Arthur M. Anderson is also among three other Great Lakes Fleet carriers that have a softer mid-section to allow loading as much cargo needed as possible. In the ship's namesake, it was named after Arthur Marvin Anderson, who was the director of U.S. Steel at one time. The ship is also a member of U.S. Steel and is still serving the Great Lakes and shipping cargo as of 2015. Thankyou for viewing this project and I really hope you will enjoy it! Thankyou!
