History up to November 1908:

Asahi is a pre-dreadnought battleship of the Imperial Japanese Navy. A modified version of the Royal Navy's Formidable-class. She was built by John Brown & Company in Clydebank, Scotland. Laid down on 1st August 1898, launched on 13th March 1899, and commissioned on 28th April 1900. She was named after a poetic name for Japan from a stanza of Japanese poetry which translates as "Rising Sun".

At the start of the Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905), the ship was assigned to the 1st Division of the 1st Fleet under Vice Admiral (later Admiral) Heihachiro Togo. She participated at the Battle of Port Arthur on 9th February 1904 and the action on 13th April where the Russian Flagship Petropavlovsk struck a mine and sunk, killing 677 men including the commander of the 1st Pacific Squadron, Vice Admiral Stepan Makarov.

During the Battle of the Yellow Sea (10th August 1904), she engaged the Russian Battleships Poltava and Tsesarevich and her guns killed Vice Admiral Wilhelm Vitgeft on the bridge of the Tsesarevich. In turn, she was hit by a single 12-inch shell and her aft guns were disabled. On 26th October, she struck a mine near Port Arthur but was able to withdraw to Sasebo for repairs that lasted until Arpil 1905.

At the Battle of Tsushima (27th May 1905), she engaged the Russian Flagship Knyaz Suvurov in the early phase of the battle, and then the battleships Borodino and Oryol at the later stage. In turn, she was lightly damaged and lost 7 men. Asahi fired around 142 12-inch shells more than any other ship during the battle. After the war she was present at the Fleet Review on 23rd October to celebrate Japan's victory over the Russians.

In 1908, the Asahi along with other ships of the Imperial Japanese Navy welcomed the arrival of the United States Navy's Great White Fleet during its visit to Japan as part of their around the world voyage. The ship also participated in Fleet Maneuvers that concluded at the Imperial Naval Review on 17th November 1908. At the event, the ship was part of the 1st Division of the 1st Fleet under Vice Admiral Baron Goro Ijuin. The commanding officer of the ship is Captain Ichiro Ishida from the 11th class of the Imperial Naval Academy. He will be replaced by Captain Juzaburo Ushida on 20th November 1908 who is a member of the 12th class of the Imperial Naval Academy and currently commanding the Armored Cruiser Nisshin.
