For my submission, I decided to use verticality of the build to tell a story. It's about to get nerdy, so be ready. In the Dungeons & Dragons world, there's a race of people called the Drow, which are essentially dark elves that live beneath the ground, and I read about 3,000 pages worth of books about one Drizzt Do'Urden as a kid and absolutely loved those stories. For the most part, Drow are evil, live in the Underdark, and worship a spider Goddess named Lolth. They hardly ever go above ground, except when they go up to raid human settlements.

To me, this made for the perfect story to tell through a vertical build: Drow that live below ground, venture upwards to the Surface, and cause destruction along the way. You can see the progression from the outside of the map, where at the base you have two Drow buildings right right above one another. They're built on a terrain of blackstone, basalt, coal blocks, and gilded blackstone for the perfect cave atmosphere of the Underdark. Spiderwebs are found all throughout the bottom half of the map, including a giant web decorating the back of the build that I have aptly and originally named: Lolth's Web. I used armor stands with netherite armor to symbolize the Drow, and they are found throughout the Drow buildings, standing guard, walking upstairs, gradually leading the way up to the top of their towers. At the very top of the Drow settlement is a room with 4 Matrons standing around a stone table, having made a blood sacrifice to Lolth before the invasion above begins.

From there, its a quick climb, a few stabbings, some extensive arson , and the first human village has been largely destroyed. This part of the build was probably the hardest to me, and it was challenging to make it obvious to the viewer that the village was destroyed while also keeping the buildings distinguishable. The invasion continues up from this level, trailing blood and fire. The second level of the Surface is a human city, which is represented by the city gate and wall, as well as the generally larger buildings there. This layer is also being burned, but doesn't have the overall destroyed feel that the village below has. This is intended to show that the attack is underway, and not enough time has passed for the flames to collapse the buildings. Redstone taking the place of blood is found in this village as well, to symbolize more fighting. Climbing up through the house, you can see that Drow have thoroughly won this part of the skirmish.

The final level is the castle, where humans are making a last stand against the Drow. On top of the roof below the castle, Drow are gathered for the final assault. Up the ladder and in the cellar below the castle, there's a last ditch fight between the city guards and the Drow, with blood covering the floor. Above the cellar, the King and his guards await the Drow to come up into the castle. The rest of the castle contains a couple of jail cells, a treasure room with gold and diamond armor, and a barracks built into the tower poking out from the main part of the castle.

The entire map is connected, and in my opinion the best way to experience the map is by starting at the bottom and walking upwards. All of the interiors are decorated, and I was surprised at how much I could fit within the 16x16 chunk. So download the map for yourself, explore it a bit, and let me know what you think!

I quite like it the way you can actually go from the top all the way down in survival. Background with lore seems to match the build spot on.

Well done fellow contestant.

ps. even though the *gif is low quality, it still looks nice
