Dunkerque build by London#5812

The evacuation of Dunkirk, commonly called the miracle of Dunkirk, or under the code name Operation Dynamo by the British, was an episode of World War II, consisting of the evacuation of Allied soldiers from the beaches and port of Dunkirk, in France, between May 26 and the early hours of June 3, 1940, after these British, French and Belgian troops were cut off from their rear by the German army during the Battle of Dunkirk.

The evacuation was ordered on 26 May 1940 without consultation with the French authorities. This evacuation thus makes impracticable the plan of counter-attack envisaged to achieve the junction of the French and British armies.

In a speech in the House of Commons, Winston Churchill qualified the events in France of "colossal military disaster", saying that "the root, nucleus and brain of the British army ”had been stranded at Dunkirk and appeared to be on the verge of perishing or being captured. On June 4, in his “We Shall Fight on the Beaches” speech, he hailed relief efforts as a “miracle of deliverance”.

On the first day, only 7,011 men were evacuated, but by the ninth day a total of 338,226 soldiers (198,229 British and 139,997 French) had been rescued by a fleet of 850 hastily assembled boats. Many soldiers were able to embark from the harbor protection breakwater on 42 British destroyers and other large ships, while others had to wade from the beaches to the ships, waiting for hours to board, to water up to the shoulders. Thousands of soldiers were transported from the beaches to the largest ships, by the "small ships of Dunkirk", a motley flotilla of about 700 boats from the merchant navy, the fishing fleet, the pleasure fleet and of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution canoes, the smallest was Tamzine, a 4.6m-long fishing boat operating on the Thames, now housed in the Imperial War Museum. Civilian crews were called to service in view of the emergency. The "miracle of the small boat"; remains in the foreground in popular memory in the United Kingdom.

Operation Dynamo is named after the dynamo room of the naval headquarters located under Dover Castle, which contained the dynamo that powered the building in electricity during the war. It was in this room that British Vice-Admiral Bertram Ramsay planned the operation and informed Winston Churchill during its execution.
