For those of you that have been following me for awhile, you have probably noticed something about me by now that I feel the need to explain. This is my use of repetitive geometric patterns, symmetry, and sameness within a map - particularly maps intended for server use. There is a strong, compelling reason for this - and I acknowledge that some of you won't care or even understand. I run a very private server for a special needs family. The disorders in my family range from Autism, Bipolar, OCD, Dyslexia, and that's just in my immediate family unit. Let's just say either you feel you found your "tribe" with us or you find yourself screaming "LET ME OFF THIS CRAZY TRAIN!" So no, I don't have plans to ever open my server to the public, sorry. Instead I share my maps whether they ever make it onto my server or not.

This little project features the latest snapshot, 15w45a, for the upcoming Minecraft 1.9 with it's fancy new purpur blocks and end rods, among other things. The reason I'm building this as a server map is because there is discussion amongst the family about downsizing the server from a multi-map server to a single map server next year and so I'm currently brainstorming about that - namely how to get the children to play and work nicely together without twisting their arms so to speak.

So my thought was "What if the map starts out with a theme of some kind that encourages cooperative play?"

  • What system would work best?

  • What would be rewarding for those that cooperate?

  • What would the goals be for cooperative play?

  • What theme would best catch and hold their interest?

These questions go on, keeping in mind that I have players ranging as young as 6 years old to adults.

So for now all I have is a town with housing set up - 16 identical houses for regular players and 4 tower houses for admins. The houses offer basic decor, a bed, and a chest. Anything else you want in it you will have to provide. Currently my only thought is that this is a town/colony starting out and it's your mission to expand it. The square that is under construction at the moment I plan to either make it a learning center for beginners or make it a commissions office. Like give the players various missions that would benefit the town/colony. You can easily set up a Villager to collect monster parts for extermination missions for example. Setting up commisions for building projects will be a little more complex, but I think we could make it work.

I'm pretty sure using plugins will make using a map like this on a server fairly easy but playing this completely vanilla will require more creativity and admin involvement. With that said, I hope to make everything work completely vanilla first. Ultimately in the end, I don't know if this map will become our new server map or not. It's just an experiment and learning process for now.

As always, I am open to suggestions and ideas so feel free to post your comments below!

And yes! You ARE free you use this map as you like. I hope you enjoy it! <3

Ooooh, very nice. :) I love the colours and the compactness of the houses, they seem perfect for survival in forest regions where there might only be a tiny patch of flat grass to fit a decent house on.

Funny you should say that.... I have recreated this map three more times since I have posted this. No worries, I have kept each map. I truly desire a quest system in this map, but I can't seem to figure out how to make it work. I at least finally have a story though, or at least the start of one for this colony.

Once again I am having a really hard time envisioning what redstone should do and for some reason I can't seem to make complex commands work in my command blocks. Like for instance, I can make a fake player named "Colony" and create an objective called "FoodSupply" but I can't seem to figure out how to make it so a player can turn food in to the warehouse to increase the colony's food supply. I'm pretty sure it involves the /testfor command and then removing the food items from the player's inventory and then just increasing the FoodSupply score for the fake player but for some reason I can't seem to get it to work at the moment. I would like the FoodSupply score to be based on a fake player because then all players on the map could contribute to the score without using teams - I might want to use teams for something else, haven't decided but I think teams are by default set up for combat.

If I can get that to work, then I'm sure I could get other things to work like monster raid events based the colony's objectives scores, etc. You know like, if they have a really high food supply then the monsters might raid, but if the defense department has a high morale, then they still might not? I don't know maybe I'm thinking too big for my level of coding skill. :P

Thanks! All three boys have been very verbal about the color scheme for this one for some reason. I'm guessing it has to do with the new purpur blocks striking their interest. Whatever the case may be, I've already had to rip out stuff more than once to reselect blocks and start entire segments over. Mind you the oldest one hasn't been super involved, but his passing comments have been enough to make me rethink things. lol

Thank you! I've been mega busy early this school year. I decided to home school my oldest son this year for the first time ever so I haven't had much time for Minecraft as I would like. It's been interesting so far. At the very least I'm relieved to see a renewed interest in learning spark in him.

He's even gone so far as to express an interest in maybe creating his own resource pack. By law in our state I'm required to provide at least one year between grades 6-12 a course that demonstrates computer proficiency and of course I have to provide fine arts every year, so I'm trying to think up a way to devise a unit study that will comply with the state standards while he explores this project - even though technically he has already met this requirement in public school. The fine arts part will be easy to meet, but I will need to make sure to do my own homework to make sure it meets standards for it to count for computer proficiency as well. It boils down to making sure each program he needs to use to make his pack gets covered in detail, etc. and how comprehesive he wants to get with his pack. Right now I know he has a theme in mind for textures and is already thinking about music and asking me about how I made that work. Then if he wants to share his pack with the public I can then pull the project in to cover social studies by covering copyright laws, fair use, EULAs and all that. Anyway I'm rambling - as always - and if I do successfully plan such a unit study project, it will be for next semester.

Normally he isn't even interested in what I'm building but today he caught wind of me thinking about making this a mission or quest driven map and suddenly had a lot of questions regarding on how I planned to go about that - personally I think he was just looking for a distraction from his pre-algebra assignment. :P

But really, I'm not sure. The snaphot has brought some really interesting changes to the command blocks that I would like to tinker with and see what I can make happen. I just wish I understood the code it uses a little better than I do. Right now I feel more like a copy-paster on an assembly line than a scripter of any kind when using them. It's just a matter of time, patience, and practice. Eventually I will get the hang of it I'm sure.

Sounds awesome! Hope that all goes well for you. Certainly a way to intergrate Minecraft into the school system would be cool.

I saw one set of parents that designed an online unit study using Minecraft to learn about the Seven Wonders of the World. The students are required to research each wonder, write about it, and then build a model of that wonder on the server they host. The cost you pay for is the study materials and the server costs. I didn't enroll my son partly because I found out about it too late and partly because I already have my own server I can use for such projects if I wished. But either way, I think it's pretty awesome. The entire course is designed to accommodate any age group - the writing assignment is adjusted accordingly. The website featured various sceenshots of kids' models and they were pretty impressive given the fact they are required to work together as a class to build it.

Last year my brother used Minecraft to demonstrate the basic concepts of circuits using Redstone to his home schooled son. But for some reason our parents are frowning on the idea that I use the game for my son. Apparently we play the game too much. :P What could we possibly learn with all that fun having? <mock huffing> This coming from people that play WoW. Like seriously. Mind you I don't have anything against this game I don't play, I'm just saying look at the kettle calling the pot black. <evil grin> But what I'm really trying to say is, that this world has so much in the way of learning if we are willing to open our minds and explore. And I really wish that more people would be willing see past a "silly game" and just see all the possiblities.

I believe if my son really wants to put his resource pack together that he will do it, with or without me. I just would like to see him get credit and recognition for his effort and have it seen as more than just a hobby - or worse, a waste of time.
