For those that know me and my family, the phrase "Experiment #5" needs no explanation. For everyone else, it basically means, without the long backstory behind it, "I haven't got a clue what I'm doing, but I'm going to do it anyway and see what happens."
So this is me just tinkering around trying to figure out how people add that amazing detail to their structures. Many times I look at those structures and wonder what I'm supposed to be seeing: it's just added for texture and dimension or is it supposed to actually look like something specific when it's added. Some structures this is really obvious to me, but there are those occasional structures that I don't get at all. Furthermore, I haven't a clue where it even begins with these structures. Do you start from the outside in, or the inside out? So many questions... so much to learn and understand.
I don't expect anyone to even like these practice projects. What I am hoping is for someone to say "hey, this what you did right here would look better if you did... [fill the blank]" or "hey what you did right there works really well to make the build look like [fill the blank]".
How well am I doing? What can I do to make it better? Or, did I do so terrible do I need to start from scratch again? There is no right answer here since I am learning and I am open to all opinions!
Just because I have updated this map, doesn't mean I've decided to be finished tinkering with it. I'm still open to suggestions, tips and pointers for better detailed building! I'll keep all my learning projects on this map for ease of tracking.
Schematics for Trees:
Giant Dark Oak
Giant Dead Dark Oak
Since these trees were built on my experiment map, I don't see a reason to post them as a seperate project. However, I will keep these schematics for future use if for some reason someone wants them. :3
I started off by building the frame of the tree and then found myself wondering how I was going to put leaves on it and still look nice. I first tried to make it a giant willow and placed the leaves on the branches by hand. Individually I think the branches look good, but due to the style of the frame the tree looked bare. I couldn't figure out how to add more branches without making a tangled mess. So I started over with the frame again but this time used MCEdit. Messing around I made clouds with leaves and then saved a portion of those clouds. I then arranged the clouds on the tree frame among the branches, pasting them in where I thought it looked good. I hope the tree finally came out okay.
IF for some reason you like any of this enough to use it somewhere, by all means you are welcome to do so! All I ask is that I get credit for whatever it is that you use from this project map. I have a map available for download mostly so people can get a better look at it.
Screenshots taken without any shaders, using default textures and left unaltered so you can see exactly what I have and haven't done with this map.

Update #6 - Beanstalk Spawn : by ToadieOdie 03/06/2016 7:51:52 amMar 6th, 2016
Well this has been sitting around for quite some time and has been a thorn in my side. I very much wanted to build a cool spawn and I wanted it to be planted themed. So why not "Jack and the Beanstalk"? I get going with this and I'm really happy and then I add the Glowstone globes that I plan to turn into flowers and two thinks strike me:
First, I should have figured out how to make those globes into flowers before sticking them onto the beanstalk. Making petals for them is proving to suck. Bad.
Second, I should have considered how the players were going to get down safely from the beanstalk when I made the stalks. Now I have to figure out how to create a natural looking path down. Oh joy.
So this has been sitting there on its original map, mocking me, as I've been trying to puzzle these two points out. I really like how my leaves and stalks turned out so I'm not really in favor of starting over.
For now I suppose it can be added to my experimental map for discussion and brainstorming. Maybe something with help me break through my creative block.
