This is a map on how to build forward and backward piston tapes. Explanations of every step and working examples to help you as you go!

This is a great way to save time when moving from one piece of data on the tape to another. Instead of going all the way around you can just go back one. This works very well for friendly user interfaces.

Example of this concept used extensively: http://www.planetminecraft.com/project/fully-customizable-singleplayer-mob-arena-wip/

So basically you have this tape of glass. The glass will circulate because of the pistons. (it goes round and round) Now if you find a place on the side (one line horizontal along the glass) you can put a line of powered repeaters behind the glass. Now put redstone on the other side of that sime glass line. Glass can't be powered, so the powered repeaters will do nothing. However, if you put a piece of wool in for the glass then the redstone on the other side from the repeaters can be powered. Because wool blocks can be powered, unlike glass. So, if you make one of these piston tapes you can disperse glass and wool blocks in the tape. So now as the tape goes round and round the redstone output (on the other side of the powered repeaters) will turn on and off, depending on whether there is a wool or glass block at that point.

Just look behind the number display on my last arena map, you'll see what I mean.
