Gasthaus zur Pinne was a Large, beautiful renaissance style Guest house in Kassel, Germany. It was located in the Wildemannsgasse and was one of a few Stone buildings in that street, as the most were build out of Timber framing.
It was build in the 17th or 16th century and had a representative renaissance style facade aswell as a gable and a decorative portal.
It was the largest building in the street Wildemannsgasse.
On the 22th octobre 1943 a Tragedy occured here: Due to the building being massive and large, 439 people seeked refuge in the building's vaulted cellars. As the city was bombed by the british, every building in the street wildemannsgasse burned down, also this building was hit and destroyed. However the cellar kept intact. But unfortunately it became a death trap. Since the british used fire bombs all the timber framed houses were affected by it and the whole street burned. The fire that was everywhere ate up the oxygen and 400 of 439 people in the cellar suffocated. Only a few were able to save themselves.
