The first castle was built by the Nikaidō clan around 1204 during the Kamakura period and was originally a fort.
It was later rebuilt on a much larger scale during the Muromachi period by the Saitō clan.
During the Sengoku-jidai period the castle was besieged and taken by Oda Nobunaga in 1567
Originally the castle was called "Inabayama Castle" but Nobunaga decided to rename it "Gifu Castle".
He was is personal residence for 10 years until the construction of Azuchi Castle is completed.
The current keep is a concrete reconstruction dating from 1955 inspired by artistic representations from Sengoku period.
