Happily Ever After is the newest nighttime spectacular at Walt Disney World featuring over a thousand firework blasts, projection mapping on the castle of over 100 different characters from classic Disney films, lasers, lights, spotlights, smoke and more! On MCParks, we began work for this massive eighteen minute show starting in October of 2018. The show on MCParks features all the characters and animations seen in the real life projection show through use of armorstand animations and a custom plugin-based effect titled blockimations. The show features almost no real redstone or command block work and is run through our custom developed show plugin.

Tech Behind the Magic
  • Our version of Happily Ever After features 32,347 lines of code in our custom show plugin, which equates to roughly 12,400 executed commands. Those commands range from armorstand based animations, to laser light paths, to simple vanilla fireworks, to spotlights.

  • While most of the show was done using custom commands in our show plugin, it could be done in vanilla Minecraft as well, but would require up to roughly 50,000 executed commands.

  • Each of the sections of the show has a different audio file to play. In the event of server based lag or a TPS drop and the show gets out of sync, the show will resume the audio and the show together for the next section.

  • Remy from Ratatouille was the first animation completed in the show and was done as training for one of the MCParks Technicians who would work on the show.

  • MCParks had over 2 dozen Cast Members working on the show in some capacity from project leaders, to Technicians programming & animating, to Imagineers building each set, to our Branding Team working on media releases and more!

  • Each character is animated in a unique show file then combined into a larger show file for other characters at the same time, then placed in a larger show file for each section of the show. This allowed the show to have multiple parts of the same piece worked on at the same time and keeps it modular for starting, stopping and reviewing certain sections without playing the entire show.

  • In addition to Blockimations, MCParks enhanced pre-existing server plugins and developed several new plugins to allow all the effects to properly work.

  • Lightning McQueen and Cruz Ramirez are the only 3D-modeled characters in the show. The 3D models for Lightning McQueen already existed from our Radiator Springs Racers attraction and the Cruz Ramirez model isn't actually Cruz, it's one of the ride vehicles from the same ride but, because of her positioning, it's hard to tell the difference.

  • Happily Ever After replaced Wishes!, our previous show which had gone through several updates over the years but the concept show had been on the server for nearly six years.

Looking to the future:
MCParks is always growing and developing new ways to recreate the famous attractions from Disney and Universal theme parks from around the world and Happily Ever After provided us with new tools to continually raise the bar of what can be done in Minecraft. Our upcoming projects are a complete rebuild of Islands of Adventure, Disneyland Park and Disney's Hollywood Studios with intentions to open some of these projects before the end of the calendar year. If you have interest in joining the team the makes these recreations possible, check out our website and apply to join the team.
