History: Melrose is a community in the City of Greenfield located in northwest Ashfield County. The area began as an industrial park known as "Melrose Industrial Park" in the mid-20th century. During the late 80s and early 90s the area began to become abandoned and by the mid-90s was left completely deserted. The area remained that way until spring 2003 when the city began to tear down the vacant buildings to make way for new development.
This period of demolition last until the next summer when the last of the rubble was removed. Upon later environmental evaluation the area was found to contain high levels of toxic chemicals, leaked into the ground by past industries of the area and was now declared unsuitable for development until it was cleaned up. The city then spent the winter debating and trying to bid off the job of cleaning the land up.
After no one gave the city an offer, Greenfield City Mayor Harry Cooper approached the local business of Kazias Building Incorporated with an offer of a 75-25 split on the bill to clean the land along with the rights to develop that land. The company agreed to the deal and in late 2005 work began to fix the environmentally damaged area. After nearly 4 years of digging, transporting and replacing the land was finally ready to be developed and in early 2009 the company was given full control over the area having completed their end of the deal.
By the end of 2009 all services had been hooked up and the roads had been paved. Starting in the early months of 2010 the first homes in the area began to go up and by the end of the year citizens of the city were already calling this former waste land their home. Starting in the summer 2012 the new Melrose Middle School was started and was opened in time for the 2013-2014 school year.
