The work is an allegory of the Republic measuring 9.5m, erected on a stone pedestal 15.5m high and about 13m in diameter at ground level. The pedestal has three stone statues, allegories of Liberty, Equality and Fraternity. Under these statues all around the pedestal, a set of twelve bronze reliefs represents key dates of the French Republic. Bronze statue of a lion, symbolizing Universal Suffrage, is placed at the foot of the statue.

The top of the pedestal is occupied by a bronze statue symbolizing the Republic or Marianne. She is depicted standing, dressed in a robe and girded with a harness with a sword attached to it. She wears both the Phrygian cap - a symbol of freedom - and a laurel crown. In her right hand, the statue holds an olive branch, symbol of peace. Statue's left hand rests on a slab with "Human Rights" written on it.

As mentioned before, the column also has three stone statues, each being an allegory of a term of the motto Liberty, Equality, Fraternity:
♦ Freedom is seated to the left of The Republic. She carries a torch in her left hand, while her right hand rests on her knee, holding a broken chain. In the background, an oak is carved in a relief on the column.
♦ Equality holds in her right hand the flag of the Republic and in the left a carpenter's level, symbol of equality.
♦ Brotherhood is a statuary group, facing in the opposite direction of the Republic. The Brotherhood is represented by a woman giving a benevolent look at two children reading a book.

L'œuvre est constituée d'une allégorie de la République en bronze de 9,5 m de hauteur, érigée sur un piédestal en pierre de 15,5 m de haut et environ 13 m de diamètre au niveau du sol. Le piédestal comporte trois statues en pierre, allégories de La Liberté, de L'Égalité et de La Fraternité. Sous ces statues, tout autour du piédestal, un ensemble de douze hauts-reliefs en bronze représentent des dates marquantes de la République française. Une statue de lion en bronze, symbolisant Le Suffrage universel, est placée au pied de la statue, sur quelques marches.

Le sommet du piédestal est occupé par une statue en bronze, haute de 9,5 m, symbolisant la République ou Marianne. Elle est représentée debout, vêtue d'une toge et ceinte d'un baudrier sur lequel est fixée une épée. Elle est coiffée à la fois du bonnet phrygien, symbole de liberté, et d'une couronne végétale. Dans sa main droite, la statue porte un rameau d'olivier, symbole de paix. Sa main gauche repose sur une tablette portant l'inscription « Droits de l'Homme ».

La colonne sert de dossier à trois statues en pierre, chacune allégorie d'un terme de la devise Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité :
♦La Liberté est assise à la gauche de La République. Elle porte un flambeau dans la main gauche, tandis que sa main droite est posée sur son genou, tenant une chaîne brisée. En arrière-plan, un chêne est sculpté en relief dans la colonne.
♦L'Égalité tient dans sa main droite le drapeau de la République, dont la hampe est marquée des initiales « R.F. », et dans la gauche un niveau de charpentier, symbole d'égalité.
♦La Fraternité est un groupe statuaire, orienté dans la direction opposée à la République. La Fraternité est représentée par une femme posant son regard bienveillant sur deux enfants en train de lire un livre. Une gerbe de blé et un bouquet évoquent l'abondance.
