Fontaine's Department Store was one of the largest known retail establishments in Rapture run and owned by Frank Fontaine. It was used to showcase products from his various businesses. The central building, the Department Store, sold customers items of clothing while offering residents recreational areas like Rapture on Ice, an artificial ice skating rink. The store is connected to the two other buildings floating at its side by a tram moving along flexible rails.

Developer: Fontaine Futuristics and Ryan Industries
Architect: The Wales Brothers
Category: Retail, Bureaucracy
Status: Constructed. Closed by the Rapture City Council
Shaders:
SEUS
Resourcepack: Pamplemousse

This building was created for the needs of my project, that's why there's wool behind the windows, no proper interior and the backside of the building was slightly modified. The glass colours may also slightly differ from the real ones. It's also really out of scale due to Minecraft's sky limit. Here it's not underwater but in the future I will try to place it properly in a deep sea abyss where it belongs. If you wish to edit it, feel free to do so, but please message me or tell me you did that so I can check it. Thank you!♦

The interior of the building will be created later as a separate location accesible by command blocks. That's caused by the scale limitations!♦

Minerva's Den Central Computing has also graciously offered a set of picture that shows how players without the newest shader technology will see this project.

Nope, building is out of scale due to sky limit so I couldn't fit any proper interior.

I love Bioshock, I love its art style and I love this build. You have captured the style, concept and those halogens just bring it all together.

Oh damn thanks :D I try my best to make them look as close to the original style as possible. Although I feel like a sinner by not putting them in the water, they would just look terrible if I did. I blame the height limit which is also the reason why the Poseidon building is not taller :/

It's a pity Minecraft again does't allow an exact re-creation of something due to the scale limitation. The build looks so good and it would certainly be perfect with a detailed interior. Really great job.

With a good texture pack it can be a really nice block actually! It's Default that makes it look hideous.

Agreed. I don't think I've ever used glowstone as a block to be seen upfront as it was in this build. I've always put it in the background for lighting purposes.

I hope a lot of somewhat good looking interiors! Cause exteriors might be a pain in the butt in Rapture's case. In Columbia, sure I can do that, but underwater builds in Minecraft are still a nono in my opinion :/

Oh yeah, without a doubt. Granted, you could build it topside and then flood it, but any half-slabs, stairs, fences, etc. are going to look odd underwater. I wish they'd redo the liquid engine to fill empty space like that, but oh well.

Either way, looking forward to the next installment of this.

"This building was created for the needs of my project"

Are you going to do something more connected to this building? (like burial at the sea adventure map or the whole Rapture recreation)

  • March 28, 2015, 2:50 pm
If you check my profile you will see Columbia (which I SHOULD update...and continue building...eh it has some difficulties..) and that means I will also have to create a part of Rapture that is in the main game. But as I will already do that, I thought that I could also make both Burials At Sea locations.

This building was just an experiment to see how the style would work in MC and I'm pretty happy with it. Although Burial's Rapture is quite HUGE which means that I would mostly limit myself to interiors only (exteriors would look just ridiculous). I'm not sure if I will do that, but I have that plan somewhere on my MAYBE TO DO list.
